  1. Is no one worried that activating with Sprint will lock the phone in?

Isnt that how the iPhone 5s works? Universal phone, but once you activate, youre locked in?

    Or am I completely wrong?

I'm going to go with completely wrong on this one.

If you buy it from google they can't lock you in , but if you buy it from sprint( subsidies) then u are locked for 2 years

That "line" is locked into a contract, not the phone. Take SIM out, put T-mobile SIM in and do what you please but you're gonna keep paying for that line or be subject to ETF.

  2. Thats what I thought, but someone said LG G2 owners were having problems.....

G2 owners never had an issue activating (from all the following I have done in that thread too) but they had/have issues with LTE connectivity *which* may be because they were 2 + weeks ahead of the official launch date of the "Spark" network. I don't think there has been a definitive answer to why they had issues but the file that contains the connection and authentication info on their pre-launch devices was/is full of what looks like dummy and null entries.

They have SIM's but they had no activation issues as they all came with Sprint SIM's and we're able to activate like normal.

  3. You don't need to activate it before selling. I've sold them sealed before and buyers have never had a problem activating.

I was just saying "I would" do it like that just to, probably really just feel better about what I was doing. Lol I know you don't "have to" and I know buyers wouldn't have issue activating.

With 5 lines and being a customer for 15yr IIRC I've don't lots of them. Insurance? Yeah, I have 2 upgrades available at all times. Ha ha Asurion, SUCK IT!

  4. Would getting a $18 cheap one off ebay do any harm to the phone? i'm not too trilled by wireless charging, but under $20 i'll consider it since i'd get two (one for work and home)
IMHO *Cheap and *Charging (wireless none the less) are two words I wouldn't like to put together. iPhone electrocution anyone?? LolSure, it's wireless so it won't get "you" but could certainly ruin your nice new phone. Just sayin..... To each their own though.

Some people have mentioned that you could get an IPhone for your upgrade @ $200 and sell it to pay off Nexus 5 and pocket the difference. Someone asked but nobody answered if you have to activate/open up IPhone or can you get IPhone but activate Nexus 5 purchased from play store instead?I understand this would extend my contract but I don't plan to leave Sprint so it works out ok...Thx!
You may need to activate the iPhone first, maybe for a day or so, then just do the ESN/Buddie Swap with the Nexus and then sell the iPhone. The process is somewhat of an "allowed" loop hole because Sprint is gonna get their money out of you no matter what on the contracted BUT I would say to at least make it look like you attempted to follow the rules. Might not really matter, but that's how I would do it.

So, would I need my N5 in hand to go into a Sprint store to try to get a SIM, or could I do so preemptively so that I have it whenever mine finally ships (says it'll be heading out by 11/5). With only 5 cards per store, I worry that I'm going to get a big run around trying to find one that has any when I finally get my hands on this thing.
And with only 5 cards *to be sent before or on the release date, I'm sure the stores aren't going to be letting them walk out of the store like that. Maybe you could somehow get someone in the store to sell it to you (they are to be provided at no cost when activating *this device) but doubtful. This is another advantage to ordering from Sprint. 5. Its true! I just got confirmation along with it being noted in my account that it will be waived. Was also told that if a phone is bought from the manufacture, Sprint won't charge any activation fee. Great way to avoid that fee.

I'm pretty sure iPhones purchased at the Apple Store have an activation fee, and they are a manufacturer.  The only waiver of activation fee I'm still aware of on Sprint is if you have the Credit Union discount.

    Robert

    Ok, general practice is this >>>>>>>> You only pay activation fee if it's a new line. You only pay upgrade fee if you get the phone at a discounted price from the carrier.  That being said, it shakes out like this;

    1. So at "no" discount from MFG, ie full retail from Google = No Activation UNLESS it's new line, if upgrade, no Activation

    2. So at discount from Sprint = Activation regardless of new line or upgrade

    3. So off of Craigslist, for existing line, phone never on Sprint, no activation (because it couldn't have been purchased at discounted price from Sprint).  *If new line, activation fee applies.

*This is general practice and obviously subject to change AND/OR other contractual agreements as well as the usual "waiver" that can be granted at the discretion of a telesales/CSR with Sprint.

    YMMV  ;)

    LOL, what else is new?

I am all for more options so I would say just get it from the play store and not have yourself tied down for the next two years.  Also this is a single nexus device for everyone to use on just about any carrier so there won't be any sprint bloatware on it.

*Unless they do like the HTC One where we had a "Sprint ID" app that on initial boot requested to download some "Sprint specific" bloatware.  You could decline/stop it from downloading (if I remember correctly, but it's been quite awhile since I flashed a completely stock rom that did include the Sprint ID app) but it was, in essence, Sprint bloat.

A little disappointed they aren't offering the 32 gb version from Sprint on order

The 16gb is the big seller, they would't bring something in that was going to be a "marginal" seller when it's pretty clear (and I imagine has been made clear over the last Nexus cycles) what the demand is for. Also, with Google selling the larger version AND Sprint allowing activation on the network, they lose nothing by not selling.  If someone wants it bad enough, they'll buy from Google OR settle with the 16gb model at subsidized pricing from Sprint. Smart business decision really, talk about win win. (we as Sprint subscribers also benefit so it's win win for us as well)

Hopefully this trend will continue as devices evolve and come jam packed with the radios to live on the different networks. Sprint has lost out on that business in the past because it was the "has to be a Sprint phone" deal.

Thanks, mrrogers. I've read all that, and I know that's what Sprint is saying and what Sprint employees are being told. What I don't understand is why an existing UICC wouldn't work.

I guess I'm really more curious about why it wouldn't work more than I'm asking asking will it work.

Honestly, I think it would work fine BUT only time and some trial and error will tell. The new phone with existing UICC SIM would still require activation at "some" level as the SIM needs to be linked to the phone.  We saw issues with HTC One's that were replaced under warranty/insurance and if the UICC was either reused OR the new UICC was not tied to the actual device (the old association was still in place), there were issues.  A quick call into #2 talk was all it took to fix OR I think we might actually have access to update it in our "Manage my account" screen but I'm not 100% sure on that.

  6. How do we even get a SIM card? Just go to a Sprint store and ask for one?

In that case is it micro SIM or nano SIM?

Looks like a micro SIM. The biggest question I have about that is whether or not you can use your existing micro SIM

What do I have to do to prepare to activate my nexus 5 when it arrives?

PER INTERNAL DOCS (and posted previously in the last 2 pages) you will need to head to a corp Sprint store to have them *give you" the UICC SIM card that is required to activate the device on the Sprint Network.

The card is a micro (from all reports BUT docs didn't specify) and I would imagine if you have a UICC (micro) SIM card in a device already, such as an HTC One, that you could pull that out and actually put into the N5 and have someone at Sprint activate over the phone.  The UICC SIM they will give you to activate in store is at no charge to you, so the only problem I'm thinking would/could be limited supply of these cards.  Each location was being (*per doc) sent 5 cards "ahead of or on" the Nov 8th launch date.  I'm sure they'll be able to get more but this is what is in the initial info.

*I don't know if "repair shops" or 3rd party stores will be doing it this way or have cards on hand to do this stuff.

  7. Cool thanks! Do you know if we are being charged $36? Why bother paying if I don't have to. ><

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that is the case because they are treating just like a new device, to your contract, on the network. No mention of waiving activation fees anywheres.

  8. So do we need to visit a store to activate it with a sim?

I'm being told you can either do it online, store or by calling *2.

*I didn't see it answered in totality so I figured I would put this out there.  :)

Internal docs specifically say that Google Play store devices MUST be activated in store.  They will not have the UICC SIM card that is needed to activate on the Sprint Network. It also says that each store will only be *initially sent 5 of these SIM cards BUT there will be NO CHARGE for the SIM *from the corporate stores. I have no idea about the "repair" shop as someone mentioned earlier.

With that said, it will not, for sure, be able to be activated on the phone or otherwise as the essential piece of hardware needed to run on our beloved Sprint Network is not supplied with the Google Play sold devices.

  9. The only way I'm aware of is by trying to activate the device through sprint...mine had no issues with this

I have seen people take the phone to a Sprint store, activate, only to have phone shut down later because the "clean" ESN ended up being black listed as stolen days/weeks later. It's risky AND Sprint will wash their hands of any responsibility for sure.

  11. Don't you have insurance on your vehicle and your home? Don't you have health insurance?  Don't all of them have some sort of deductible?  I wouldn't say its a scam, that's just how it is with most types of insurance.

Most types won't have you completely upside down if you have to use it *after the 1yr mark though. My insurance is to always have at least 1 upgrade available at all times.  :D  (We are pretty good to devices so it works out well)  They are getting pretty sneaky with the ESRP vs TEP these days though as TEP is "required" on some devices (specifically the One) because of high price of replacement/fix since they can't repair in store. I carry ESRP on all devices which you can feel good about paying for in store help.

  12. The Best Buy pre-order deal just got better. G2 is now free on new contract/line, still $99 on upgrade.

Only problem there is that if you are on Everything Shared Data plan and try to add new line, they more than likely will make you do the My Way plan which isn't "as good of a way" as the Everything Shared plans.  Great deal on the phone that, heck of a deal.

  13. Thought if it was stollen the ESN would be flagged and I couldn't activate it?

Sent from my LG-LS980 using Tapatalk

    Maybe they don't know yet?

Certainly wouldn't be the first time a hot device didn't get flagged before it was activated.

  14. My root method would have nothing to do with the LTE. I'm a repair tech for Sprint and 2 of my other co-workers are saying they cannot connect at all also.

That aside, "a control group needs to be as is, out of box or as we'd typically call, "stock".

  15. Important announcement:

Anyone else who gets a pre release G2, do not get greedy and muck with the band settings. Live with the default for a few days and report your findings. You will be part of our control group.

    AJ

Also, DO NOT ROOT, control group needs to be as is, out of box or as we'd typically call, "stock".  There have been root methods that screw with pretty essential functions and settings.  :)

I'm finding it a bit scary (I'd say hard to believe but I don't mean that the guy is lying) that someone who "always had" LTE hasn't even seen LTE at all on the G2. Unless the G2 is only in one location and that location was fridge for your "typical" LTE device because the Note 2 is a known beast, best of class as far at RF performance goes.

  16. ok welp, after sifting through things to try and get the msl on my note 2 (just so i know what i was looking for) they all seem out dated...

WHICH means i will be asking here....because for my little brain...xda seems to scattered about, and the ads all over give me a headache....i tried it before every so often....and its still the same

Just call Sprint or ask in Sprint chat like I advised you to.  The Sprint CSRs have access to the information to tell you your MSL code.

Or if you are rooted, there is a MSL reader app I believe.  *Keep in mind, that number is going to change from device to device so if you are getting it, in hopes of being prepared when the G2 is delivered, just wait.

  17. I know you are trying to help but its reasons like this why devices are s-on in the first place. The purpose of supercid'ing a device is so that you can run any RUU on it but just about any other RUU available right now will be for a gsm variant and doing so on a sprint One will more than likely brick your device. Now if you wanted to flash an RUU made for a cdma carrier like boost mobile for example then that would be fine but flashing a gsm ruu on a cdma device will cause major problems. Now I am not a developer and I could be wrong and if I am please correct me.

"but I've never done it and have *not researched it extensively."

No doubt man, I had a little mistype there but like I said, I haven't done it or researched it much. Others "supposedly" have done what he was asking but who knows.

You are probably 100% right, nothing to say otherwise, so always good to have more info available, Thanks for the reply.
