  2. ALU in Raleigh-Durham is being handled differently than NYC then. They are doing 4G around here and haven't turned on many 3G sites yet. I wish they would turn on a big batch because I tend to fall back to 3G a lot in some areas and it's horrible. In the eastern part of the market (east of Raleigh a little) they turned on a bunch of 3G sites first and are steadily adding LTE on them, but most of the rest of the market has been 4G first and very little 3G updates.

  4. Interesting... if I follow that link then put in my address it tells me service is not available. However, you can click "Get Anyway" on that screen and you can still get the 5580 for $149. Going from the main website and putting in my address first I don't have that option at all.
  5. I noticed this too. That's not the Tri-band hotspot. I don't know why, but the Tri-Band isn't showing up at my home address either only this one. When I put in a different address in Raleigh then it showed the MiFi 5580 as an option for $149. Even though LTE is available and showing on Sprint's coverage maps in my area FreedomPop won't give me this hotspot as an option. Don't know why. Wondering if the hotspot we're being shown is an LTE "4G" hotspot or a WiMax hotspot?

  8. Well, I know that's true for phones as I've lost discounts on my additional lines over the years. However, I have a separate hotspot plan that still has the discount as well as my first phone line. Maybe it's because it's an older 3G only data plan, I don't know.

  10. Well, this option is a no-go for me...at least right now. Called this afternoon sign up and was told it's only available in some parts of the northeast right now. Around the DC area, Western Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and a little of Kentucky. Apparently it's just a pilot and they "should" be expanding but for now it's limited in availability.

  14. I wish they'd go ahead and turn on 3G on more of the towers that have 4G around here. There was a big cluster of 40 turned on in Charlotte the other day, would be nice to flip the switch on a bunch in the Raleigh market too.
  15. There were two LTE sites turned on near Six Forks in the last update. One near Northclift and the other one a little south of there (don't remember exactly where off the top of my head). So if it was in that vicinity that makes sense.
  16. Robert, Glad to hear that the hotspot is an "RF beast". I know LTE is active on my closest tower but I can't pick it up with my S3 at home. With this thing though, I'm wondering if it would be possible. Right now, with my wireless broadband card I can get a -100dBm EVDO signal with an external antenna but that's RSSI. Does the Zing have an input for an external antenna? Any thoughts on whether usable signal MIGHT be picked up by this thing? Thanks.
  17. I typically end up roaming at home except when I'm near my 2nd story office window or in some places outside. With SignalCheckPro now showing the network provider I noticed I was roaming on "Alltel", which kind of surprised me. I didn't think they were still in business but apparently North Carolina is one of the 6 states they still operate. They used to be real big here but I remembered Verizon bought them out. Now I see that AT&T also bought the remaining parts of Alltel in January with the sale expected to close later this year. All of this consolidation won't be good for consumers. We've seen it too many times in other industries and the results are rarely good.
  18. Talked to AT&T today and my 23% discount would work on the data portion ($120 for 30GB) but not on the phone piece ($20). So at least that's better than Verizon. I was thinking to switch home phone anyway, and was going to do Sprint Phone Connect. But with these better data options on AT&T I've got some thinking to do. I with Sprint would do something similar or even just lower their overages on their mobile broadband plans. $50/GB is just way too much. And I'm not getting 1900 LTE at home anyway right now, so Sprint's not an option until 800 LTE starts rolling out.
  19. This is similar to Verizon's HomeFusion plan, price-wise. But they do require the phone piece with it at an additional $20/mo. What I'd like to know is whether my employer discount applies to this plan or not. With Verizon it doesn't apply to HomeFusion since they say it's not a program of Verizon Wireless but rather of their wireline division. But you can use a hotspot and get similar amounts of data (30GB) on the mobile share plan and get the discount. The price ends up being about the same but overage is $15/GB instead of $10/GB. I need to call AT&T today about data usage on my hotspot and will ask about the discount then post back here.
