Yes, a call originating on Wi-Fi will not hand off to cellular.

    (edit)

And, vice versa. Cellular won't hand-off to Wi-Fi.

Thanks jonathanm1978.  It's a relief to know the phone actually supports it but extremely frustrating the I'm running the exact same build and it's like someone went in with a scalpel and excised the Wi-fi calling app and menu.  Guess it's time to contact Sprint Customer Care -- This isn't going to be fun.  :(

I'm not sure why it would be missing.

    That's definitely an odd thing.

Of those using it, I've noticed that between the GS5, and my G3 the past 2 days...wifi calling sounds MUCH, MUCH better.

Is the chip in the g3 better than the 8974 thats in the s5?

Does anyone know if the only way to back out of messaging to the conversation list is by hitting back twice?

Seems like you would be able to tap beside the contact name to get to convo list, but it brings up contact info. I only found hitting back twice, while in a text convo, to get back to the list.

I got the G3 today.....yesterday rather. You CAN switch easy pay lines around also, just did that.

Also while in the store I talked with repair/service and they showed me a brand new tower in my area that the maps here don't even show yet. It's not broadcasting anything right now but says in 6months it'll be up.

  1. What's with the System Update checking multiple times a day? I see it checking for a system update when I end a call, connect to a different router in my house, 3 or 4 times a day...used to didn't do that before the wifi calling update.

Maybe we are getting another update soon to handle a few bugs?  I'm hoping the stability of the wifi calling is increased too, along with optimizing the camera app to open within 10 seconds...waiting on the camera to open when you have a kodak moment is a pain.

  2. Were you using your Vonage phone at the very moments you experienced your WiFi calling going out? Probably not. Trust me... I am an IT guy at my job...implemented a VoIP Phone system a few years ago... phone quality is predicated on the reliability and speed of your Internet connection.

I have used WiFi calling since it was available on my 720T in April... there were times that the other party recognizes a delay or static, but understand..... that is the nature of the VoIP beast.

Each person is different, but I look at WiFi calling from Sprint on my S4 as an added benefit and it isn't going to be perfect.

Sprint certainly didn't have to implement WiFi calling, but they are trying to enhance their in building service quality and stay competitive.

I can say this... WiFi is available almost anywhere where. I travel or visit... with WiFi calling... I am NEVER without phone service.

    My thoughts..

No. But at the same time, this:

    http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/5795-samsung-galaxy-s5-user-thread/?p=335175

It was pretty widespread when it went out, and pretty widespread when it came back.  Seems like a bunch of us lost wifi calling around the same time on the same date, and it came back around the same time on the same date.

My point in saying the stuff about vonage et al was that my network holds up for all this stuff to work, and between 2 individual DSL lines, neither would allow wifi calling to connect and work. Nor would networks away from home that are even faster with better connections. It was just not working on the Sprint side at all, even though it had been fine up until that point.

If my 2nd line is good enough to play BF4 on the Playstation 4 in a multiplayer game, then it should be fine for wifi calling when the Ps4 is turned off..which is the case the majority of the time. I rarely play but a couple times a week anymore, and that DSL line is specifically for my Ps4 only. The other line is used for surfing, etc.

  3. Umm, guys I need some help.... I tried sending some pictures I took on the 4th and it popped up and said unable to read image type, it only had a button for ok. When I clicked it, it cleared the picture from the text box and now the two are missing from my gallery. Is there a way to get them back?

Can you find the files with a file manager? If not, I'd guess that the phone app got goofed and messed the images up.
  4. Wifi calling may not work like that, but it sure doesn't work like my VOIP vonage service does either...

If it was my connection, as you are assuming it was, then that doesn't start to add up.

As I said..two physical DSL lines, and when I've seen wifi calling go out on my phone, I switch to the other DSL line to see if it's "my network" ..which it hasn't been.

I've left home and went to other places that have even better broadband than I do (6meg / .5meg on both lines)...and still had the outage.

And not only that, when I last had wifi calling just quit, there was a large discussion on the Sprint community forum about it, and I'm sure that wasn't just people on my network. Actually I never posted on there about it. So that tells me that there is something more widespread, when my wifi calling is out, and so is ### of other people on the Sprint community site. Then suddenly we all get it back at the same time.

Someone posted in the S5 thread the other day that their wifi calling had just came back, and mine had just come back when I read that post (within two minutes before I read it).

I have an airave that runs off the same network that my wifi calling works on. Switch off wifi calling and the airave makes a call just fine. Pick up my vonage phone and make a call just fine..on the same network.

The airave is on DSL line 1...vonage is on DSL line 2. And my wife runs wifi calling on the opposite network as I do at all times...so we don't use the same DSL line for our phones on wifi calling.

It's gonna take some steady evidence for me to belief that all of this other stuff works fine when wifi calling suddenly quits and it's all to be blamed on my end.

  5. I'm seeing, with my s5, lots of small outages with Wi-Fi calling. Works great mostly, but seems like they take it offline from time to time for working on it. Just my opinion, I have no clue if this is the case. When my Wi-Fi calling doesn't work, I immediately change to my other DSL line to see if network is the problem. Always my Wi-Fi calling and wife's goes out at same time.

I absolutely loved my g2. If it didn't have serious GPS issues and a weak radio, I would have kept it. That battery was so great. I can't wait to try this phone in a store even though I'm loving this m8 at the moment. I, too, am a self-proclaimed phone whore, and it's a problem. :)

I'm loving my gs5 and its hard to put down a phone I really like, even if it's for another phone I really like. I dunno what I'll do yet...if I can't figure how to get less lag on the camera with my gs5, especially on opening the camera app, I may switch. I need a snappy response on my camera since I take lots of pics.

  6. Thanks for the updates on Alabama. I'll come back to Sprint proper when Birmingham gets some love, on Virgin for now.

Birmingham is pretty well-showered with LTE now, a far cry from just a year ago. I talked with an AT&T DSL tech just two days ago and discussed the entire cellular/last-mile copper/fiber loops etc...

I wish if backhaul is the culprit, which seems a likely possibility, that the biggest owner of fiber loops around here...AT&T...would blow the dust off of their trucks and get these orders completed on fiber runs to the towers that Sprint is waiting on to flip LTE. Gracious plenty of 3G completed sites that are waiting on LTE...2 within just a few miles of me are in this state..and have been for a while.

Has anyone been able to successfully move an easy pay phone to a different line under your account? For example...since I got the gs5 when my daughter dumped my G2 in the pool, can I move my gs5 to my line that my sis in law uses, which is a non easy pay HTC one...then get myself a g3??

I would have to move my gs5 to her, but likely will have to take the HTC one on my number until I get to the store...

  7. I got the update also, and signal check shows a -120db ev-do signal, even though my airave is still on...unsure on the inner workings of Wi-Fi calling, but I know it works with such readings.
