  1. Again, one -- or even a few locations -- does not an issue make.  That is not a representative sample.  Plenty can offer experiences as counterexamples for both Sprint and T-Mobile.

Plus, the Nexus 5 is a quirky handset.  I should know -- I own one.  And it is on the early .15 baseband firmware.  The Nexus 5 is the best and the worst.  There is good reason why its tri band capability was basically six months in coming.

A few locations does make an issue. I doubt the few locations I've been to are the only ones that suffer from this problem. I use a galaxy S5 as well, and it behaves the same as the Nexus 5 in this regard.

Regardless of other networks, there is a problem with Sprint triband devices, or how the network is handling them. They should not hold onto a strong CDMA signal that's overburdened when a strong unburdened LTE signal is available.

    I propose every 5 minutes:

If 1X is signal strength is greater than or equal to -85,

    Then inititiate LTE scan.

If LTE scan results in no signal greater than -115 available, return to normal scan behavior until connected to a new 1X sector.

  2. It is not a Sprint problem.  VZW, AT&T, and T-Mobile devices will hang on to a "3G" signal long after a solid LTE signal is available.  Again, you just have to deal with it.  The issue cannot be fixed until LTE is the only airlink.  Then, beware what you wish for, as the options may be LTE or nothing.

At least as of a month ago, head over to 135th and mur-len. I stayed with a friend there for the night. Sit for about 10 minutes, watch your -95 B41 signal drop down to 3G. It will stay on 3G all night.

The same Nexus 5 with a T-mobile Sim never has the issue hanging onto HSPA too long for me in the same areas. It will bring itself back to LTE with a few minutes of idle time.

  3. Do I need to say it more clearly?  The Katy, TX network is inadequate.  The area has outgrown the site spacing.  Locals have told us so.  Please do not use that as an example.  It is just cherry picking bad experiences.

LTE signal of -70 to -90. 3G signal of -65. LTE has 60mbps of bandwidth available on B41, 3G gets 0.01 or times out. This isn't about site spacing, and this has happened to me in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Olathe, and in Houston.

  4. All I can say is this.  If you are obsessed with being on LTE 24/7 everywhere -- even within the established coverage footprint -- good luck.  That is not going to be the case for years, maybe another decade.  eHRPD fallback is going to happen.  So, deal with it, or go find another provider -- and hope for the best.  At least in the Kansas market, eHRPD fallback is hardly the shitstorm it is made out to be.  Because of the traffic now running over LTE, eHRPD is just as usable as LTE for real world purposes -- absent the e-penis speed tests.

I don't care what I'm connected to, this is about having working data. Users are sitting on a 3G connection that is so overburdened, it times out. At the same time, nearly empty B26 and B41 connections are available. Sprint is fantastic for me as I provider, and I don't mind toggling airplane mode.

I'm talking about how the Sprint network is performing in other areas I've been to, and how the user experience could be immensely improved if something was implemented to move the phones over to LTE more often. When a phone is sitting on a table idle for 30 minutes or more with it's screen off, there is no reason it should stay on an overburdened 3G when unburdened LTE is available.

Why not scan for LTE every 5 minutes when connected to Sprint CDMA when the screen is off? Or initiate a scan for LTE immediately when the screen is turned on?

  5. And I am not sure that an experience at Christian-fil-A in Katy, TX is a representative sample of the Sprint network or a rational rebuttal to e/CSFB.

Here is what we know.  Sources told us that SVLTE would not continue with tri band handsets.  We initially disputed that contention, but it has long since proved to be accurate.  Single RF path, e/CSFB handsets are here to stay -- because they better align with SoftBank's economy of scale and keep CDMA2000 from being an albatross around Sprint's neck.  They also are known to be superior RF performers -- due to the LTE idle state and the lack of power reduction or intermodulation issues from simultaneous airlinks.

Now, you can argue about the LTE scan timer issue.  But that is a handset programming concern.  And it can be addressed by placing the handset in LTE only mode.

I'm just sharing my observations. This happens all around Katy, the location was just where we were at the time. I don't have the same problems in Overland Park.

I agree that having a Single RF path is superior, but Sprint's implementation so far has been a nightmare in certain areas. The LTE scan timer should be set to scan every 5 minutes when on native Sprint CDMA, EVEN IF there is an active 3G data session. Having brief interruptions on 3G would be far less worse than being stuck with, and I quote from what others call, "The ******* spinning 3G circle."

  6. Except for those who obsess over simultaneous voice and data, e/CSFB is superior to both SVLTE and Apple's CDMA2000 iPhone 5/5S/5C solution -- because e/CSFB allows the handset to idle solely on LTE.  Both SVLTE and Apple's solution require the handset still to camp on CDMA1X, too, following the prescribed slot cycle.

The still rampant ECSFB issues/random fall backs to 3G say otherwise. Iphones don't seem to have this same issue.  :wall:

  7. After the tower optimization, I went from having a crappy 1x experience in the house to being able to grab B26 in my basement. That, in and of itself, has me pretty hopeful for when the towers are finally upgraded near my office, where I'm parked on 1x or Extended all damn day.

Same here, multiple places that I've been stuck on 1x before I now get B26. It seems in a lot of areas B26 reaches further than EVDO.

  8. Does that mean a shut down of all wimax broadcast? Even protection sites?

Maybe all protection sites will be converted to full build. I don't see why not if they have to broadcast 2500MHz at them anyway. If they don't allow consumers to use wimax, wouldn't that mean they'd have to be upgraded to LTE?

Do consumers have to be able to use the spectrum in order to satisfy the build out requirements?

  9. Actually, its probably more related to the fact that Verizon has a tendency of blocking any device that have the capability of operating on other networks, look at the Nexus 7 fiasco.

I still don't see how google could make a phone that would work on Verizon and Sprint (triband). All current phones either have svlte or ecsfb. If it was feasible to do both in one phone (triband+svlte), Sprint would have been doing it this entire time.

  10. Hopefully... Google had enough response with the Nexus 5 having both CDMA/GSM/LTE antenna's covering all the spectrums. They should go ahead and do the same thing again. only reason it couldn't be used with Verizon is because Verizon didn't allow it.

I'm pretty sure the main reason it wasn't available on Verizon was because they don't have ECSFB enabled on their network.

  11. Hmm imagine that a special cable company, that sells services like unlimited Netflix streaming, but no p2p access, no web access, it just uses a certain app and work only with certain streaming services. Can pay for web page access. People could bug what they need. Some use only web pages/email, make a cheaper package for them, streaming more expensive.

This already exists to an extent. Those who need p2p use the highest speed tier, those who want to stream youtube/netflix use the middle tier, those who just want to email/web browse use the slowest speed tier.

  12. Haven't received the update either. Is the common denominator Google Voice integration?

    If so, that's rather telling...

Yeah, I can to send texts with data on hangouts when not Sprint GV integrated, but once Sprint GV integration is enabled, I lose the ability to text over data. It still works with the GV app though.

It seems like they had an oversight or something.

Edit: And its been a pain going back and forth with all of this, so I'd recommend anyone who is Sprint integrated to just hang tight until Google fixes this. It takes customer service calls to get GV integration back most of the time it seems.

  13. I didn't even get that far :-(

They said that they couldn't activate the phones and suggested I go to another store in the area, who "Might be able to help me".

I with you was shocked, I couldn't believe what was happening. Is Dan's email still monitored?

O and yes, I told them that they were previously on AT&T but explained they were sold unlocked from Google, and are compatible with their network. Here is the best part, the main rep i spoke to was the sales team lead... *sigh*

Yah I don't know what they were thinking, probably unhappy I wasn't activating 4 GS5's on Easy Pay like the woman next to me.

Good point. I don't know if it's monitored anymore since he's not there... lol

You could also leave a post on the Sprint community with your experience. Sometimes the customer service people there will call the store you went to and explain how things work. Depending on how much you want this to work out lol

  14. Well, the meeting flopped today.

The sprint reps had no idea what they were doing with the phones and said uh...we can't activate these. They tried to claim they couldn't activate the phone even though they had a N5 on display.

You might try XYZ store, they have more experience..

I went to the only corporate store in the area, and they recommended I go to a licensed re-seller..

*Sigh* Gave sprint another chance and came up sorely disappointed.

What was their excuse? All they would need to do is throw in a uicc card and read the meid off the phone information in the settings. It's their job to activate Sprint phones, they do it every time they make a sale. It just blows my mind how they would turn you down. I say report your experience with the store to dan@sprint.com at least.

Edit: Did you confuse them by saying you used the phone on At&t? If so I wouldn't mention that. Just come forward and say I want to activate these Sprint phones on plan X. Get the manager if you have to.
