  1. Is there an echo in here? That was mentioned last night, a few posts before yours.. but it is big news if someone can corroborate it. -Mike
  2. Exactly what my first thought was when I saw Dan@Sprint's response and read your post. If someone buys one off Swappa, Sprint is apparently going to initially tell them the device is defective. Then they will eventually learn that their N5 has the same hardware and software as one sold by Sprint or Google.. but because of where it was initially purchased, a company policy is preventing activation. Don't get me wrong, Sprint has every right to decide what does and does not operate on their network. But it seems foolish to implement something that only prevents people from becoming customers. The very "un-CDMA"-like nature of using a SIM to choose a provider is very appealing and has probably increased the number of users subscribing to more than one network. Pretty sure I can guess the answer to this already, but is T-Mobile doing anything to prevent Sprint-purchased N5's on their network? I don't believe there is a parallel "activation" process other than a SIM, correct? -Mike
  3. There isn't really anything you can do with a phone to determine that any Band 26 or 41 is testing or live in your area, other than connecting to it. Your screen shots weren't showing LTE of any flavor. -Mike
  4. Did you have them read back the MEID they had in the system? Did you double-check it not only with the box, but also the phone itself? Maybe things got mixed up and the label on the box has an error or doesn't match your device. What does Sprint say when you tell them you've already been using it on T-Mobile? Google is right. The rep from LG was probably just speaking based off knowledge of just about every other phone with a US provider. They aren't "essentially" not carrier locked--they aren't locked at all. Nope. About 6 years ago I got a new Nextel ic902, a "hybrid" device that used both Nextel and Sprint (side note: still might be my favorite phone ever). Purchased from Sprint with my contract upgrade, in-store, activated in-store. For 2 weeks I had nothing but problems with the phone. Numerous store visits and tech support calls from airport payphones while I was traveling got me nowhere. Reps started coming up with wacky excuses like the phone wasn't allowed on my plan, my plan was discontinued, all sorts of silliness. Finally after two calls to Executive Services (I think that's what it was called; seemed like the precursor to Dan@Sprint), someone figured it out -- it was a typo on my device's entry in their system, I believe on the Nextel SIM. Corrected within seconds, bang, instantly fixed. It was done wrong at the store on Day 1, and none of the other reps ever paid close enough attention when verifying the number. If you are certain they have the right MEID, try contacting dan@sprint.com. They are a bit more knowledgeable and detail-oriented than the average first-tier support rep, and might have more information at their disposal than someone at a store. -Mike
  5. Yeah, the 1X provider name and the KitKat freezing/crashing issues when alerts are enabled all appear to be related to the CDMA/LTE handoff. It has been tough to narrow it down further because each device's radio handles the process slightly differently. I think that once I find a way to fix this, it will resolve both problems at once. -Mike
  6. There is no "T-Mobile" Nexus 5 or "Sprint" Nexus 5.. every single Nexus 5 is identical (except for 16/32 GB and white/black), no matter where you bought it from -- T-Mobile, Google Play, Sprint, eBay, or that guy in the white van parked in the back of the Home Depot lot. The 16GB model is sold by Sprint, so they should have no problem activating it for you. Some early adopters had issues with the 32GB version because Sprint did not have that on file yet, but that problem has long since been resolved. If you are using the IMEI to try activating, leave off the last digit (which makes it identical to the MEID). They will need the serial number from the SIM card as well -- double and triple check the numbers on both; 99% of the issues I have seen are from misread (by users) or mistyped (by Sprint) characters. I was able to activate my 32GB online nearly 2 months ago with Sprint's automated system; at the end it bounced me to a brief chat where I had to provide the SIM info, since that was not part of the website. The entire process took about 5 minutes. -Mike
  7. That's a pesky bug that I have been able to minimize but apparently not completely eliminate yet! I thought it was fixed, but saw it pop up myself the other day while I was driving for the first time in awhile.. yelled some choice words when I saw it! I'm working on that, the KitKat crashes, and the inconsistent notifications.. -Mike
  8. Gotcha. I interpreted your earlier comments as "my phone seems to be showing one less signal level than Sensorly shows." In any case, most of the factors that are going to affect reception on a modern phone are out of your control. Even if you found the "sweet spot" to hold it just right for optimal signal, the marginal benefit would probably be outweighed by the time wasted and nuisance of having to hold it just right. The only thing you can control is where you are standing.. move towards a window or closer to the site Root that phone, then you can enjoy the easy resets! I believe that SpenceSouth's team had mentioned they were testing a method to get airplane toggle working without root on 4.2+, but I haven't heard much about it. That Wi-Fi issue certainly seems like a bug. Do you have a dual radio (2.4GHz/5GHz) router with matching SSIDs that is possibly confusing your phone? -Mike
  9. Signal bars are not universal and are a poor choice to use as a measure of comparison unless you're comparing identical devices and looking at identical software. Don't compare Sensorly color shades with signal bars. Several users on here have developed useful signal monitoring apps.. LTE Discovery (SpenceSouth), Signal Strength Detector (lordsutch), and SignalCheck (me). Each one is slightly different so try them all and see what you like. LTE Discovery might be best for you if you're trying to connect to LTE more often. You can configure it to reset your connection periodically, minimizing how often you get "stuck" on eHRPD when LTE is available. -Mike
  10. Some who mapped signal levels might have used devices with software defects that report the signal levels as stronger than they actually are to Sensorly. I believe the Galaxy Nexus is one device that reports all LTE to sensorly as max-strength, but I could be mistaken. Extensive mapping in an area with a device like that could throw all of the mapping out of whack, showing stronger signals where they really don't exist. In reality, there is not much of anything you can do with your individual device. Unless you find yourself using one device that seems to work great and another in the same location fails to connect or shows significantly lower signal levels, it's just the current state of the network. The LTE airlink is also not as robust as 1X, so it cannot hold onto weaker signals as well. -Mike
  11. FYI, there is also a third-party app called Voxer which is similar to Direct Connect but is not limited to specific devices or wireless providers. I don't think anything will truly compare to the old-school Nextel system, but Voxer isn't bad. -Mike
  12. Sensorly would probably run the risk of having their existing app removed from the App Store if they release a separate version for jailbroken devices. An app like that violates Apple's developer TOS, and they rule their store with a notoriously iron fist. It is a very different environment than Google Play. -Mike
  13. Not sure what you were expecting from Sprint; if he doesn't have a service plan, the problem falls back on the warranty, which is provided by HTC. That is standard, and not a deficiency on Sprint's part. For example, pretend you buy a Sony TV from Best Buy that has a 1-year warranty, and you don't add on a service plan. 8 months after you buy it, it fails. You then need to contact Sony, not Best Buy. And neither Best Buy or Sony is expected to pay your cable bill in the meantime. S4GRU is not Sprint. If you want to complain, contact them. I'm sure your individual situation is frustrating to you, but we're not here take complaints. Feel free to try T-Mobile, but they likely would have treated your situation the same way. -Mike
  14. Did you miss my reply to you just above yours..? Also, for what it's worth, every article I could find about the S4T indicated that other than tri-band capability, it would have the exact same specs as the S4. -Mike
  15. I just did a quick search on Google Play, and found this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cpuid.cpu_z I tried it out and it doesn't seem to show modem info for me, but everything else is interesting. There are several other similar apps, but that appeared to be the cleanest and least gimmicky. -Mike
  16. Quick note.. I think I discovered what is causing the crashing/freezing issues: alerts! I don't have any enabled, which is why I probably never experienced issues.. turned them on tonight to start testing something tonight--bam, issues. Turned them off, back to normal. That explains why most people correlated it with losing or connecting to data; those events are what trigger alerts. Those of you who have been experiencing problems -- can you confirm if you had any alerts enabled? And if you disable them, does the app seem more stable? Not sure what the resolution is going to be or how long that might take, but I'll be working on it. It is likely an issue with a newer version of Android, because I haven't touched the alert code in a long time. -Mike
  17. Has anyone tried to disable notifications for a particular app by long pressing on a notification or going to Settings > Apps and unchecking "Show notifications"? I did that for a game that doesn't let you configure the notifications.. I don't see them, but the sound is still played. Took me two weeks to figure out why I thought I was hearing things.. -Mike
  18. The caller ID feature has worked great for me from the beginning, on inbound and outbound calls.. it didn't occur to me that it was dependent on Wi-Fi until reading these posts, but that makes sense. It does seems to cache the information somewhere on the device for future calls as well. I made a test call with no Wi-Fi, no information displayed. Redialed while on Wi-Fi, and it worked; cleared the call from my history, disabled Wi-Fi, and dialed it again.. the company info still showed. Pretty cool. This article indicates that Google Places is the source of the data, and Google plans on including personal numbers from Google accounts on there in the future as well. Looks like that part is enabled by default too, at least for me it was.. interesting. When I was a kid, the phone rang, and you had no idea who it might be.. amazing that stuff like this and video chatting from a mobile phone is normal these days. -Mike
  19. Feel free to post the ID method here, or if you think it's better placed elsewhere, throw a link to the post here. It's relevant to the app if it helps improve features! -Mike
  20. It doesn't seem to be widespread, but it has definitely spiked up over the past week or two. Seems to happen when the data connection is dropped. I'm still looking into it; if anyone notices a pattern or has any ideas, feel free to post. Unfortunately nothing is happening in logcat, so it's tricky to figure out the exact situation that triggers it. Oh, and to distract everyone from talking about crashes.. guess who stayed up until 5:30am getting site logging working in his app!? This guy.. Stay tuned! -Mike
  21. He is referring to any LTE data showing up in SignalCheck, not just the GCI and PCI data. A bug was causing no LTE data to be showing in the app when in LTE-only mode, which is what most (all?) G2 users need to be on to connect to Band 41. That has been fixed in version 4.22, which is already out for Pro users, but won't be released for Lite until this weekend. Do your Band 41 sites start with 04? Or is that Band 25? PM me a screenshot when you can. -Mike
  22. That might be the default behavior when you first unbox the phone, but that doesn't necessarily mean it stays that way. Apps can change the list of radios to toggle when Airplane Mode is triggered. For example, if you use the Reset feature on SignalCheck, it sets this list to only reset the cellular radio when airplane mode is toggled. Other apps could change the list to include/exclude cell/BT/wifi as well. Starting with Android 4.2, apps cannot change this list (or control airplane mode) unless the device is rooted. -Mike
  23. Thanks. Yeah, I don't think the MCC-MNC is a great indicator, at least not right now. Earlier today, I posted something in a Premier Sponsor thread that would be worthy of mention over here.. I was able to confirm with Sprint today that Band 25 and 26 are only using PLMN (MCC-MNC) 310-120. Band 41 is on 311-490 or 311-870. All of this is subject to change in the future if they decide to consolidate IDs. However, I also know that Virgin Mobile users see Band 25 on 311-490. So while this information is helpful and can point people in the right direction, it's not absolute. I guess if you see 311-970, you're on band 41. As far as the GCI goes, that's a great observation and something I hope forms a pattern nationally. We'll see what happens once more people start connecting to it with devices that can show the GCI. -Mike
  24. No, the worst part of the Sprint maps is how sadly inaccurate they are! That's ancient history in Internet years -Mike
  25. Give Sprint a call, make sure they activated your phone properly. Confirm that you gave them the correct MEID, and if you read it to them off the box, confirm that it matches the phone. Confirm the SIM serial number and have them read it back to you. There are a lot of important characters that need to be just right, funny how just one wrong digit can make a huge difference! -Mike
