  1. Correct. You were connected to CDMA 800 (the SID and channel 487 confirm that), but that site was broadcasting invalid location coordinates.. that is why the BSL line is missing. You can see on the engineering screen it says latitude 0 (the longitude is unreliable; it is almost always wrong on Samsung devices). -Mike
  2. Like mrrogers1 said, check mobile location services.. if that doesn't work, hit About > Send Diagnostics and it will send me a report that might show what the problem is. -Mike
  3. Battery drain is usually a result of software, not hardware. Some background Google services might spike here and there when you initially activate a device or something is upgraded (some Google services update silently in the background without any user knowledge or interaction). Give it a couple of days to settle down and average out. If you're seeing issues after swapping devices, it's even less likely to be hardware-related. Are you often roaming or in poor signal areas? That decreases battery life. Do you ever connect to Wi-Fi? That helps increase battery life. Screen brightness and sleep times also affect it. -Mike
  4. From another recent post where someone else asked.. http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/5115-is-hd-voice-now-on-mine-appears-to-be-working/?p=256928: -Mike
  5. You may connect to a CDMA 800 site that is on the test SID, which could mean it's not ready for full action for one reason or another. If you are on a telephone call initiated on CDMA 800, it will be dropped if you are no longer in range of any CDMA 800 signals. I believe the proper term for switching between 800MHz<->1900MHz is a "hard handoff" -- your phone will switch bands, but you will be disconnected when it happens. -Mike
  6. Annnnnd this instantly popped in my head... http://youtu.be/1ytCEuuW2_A -Mike
  7. When he was first hired, a lot of media types around here jumped the gun, said it was a bizarre move, there were better options, blah blah blah.. I was psyched. Same when Terry Francona was hired by the Sox.. media and a lot of my friends were shaking their heads. I thought it was the perfect move. Much rather have a guy who knows his stuff on the field than someone who wears sharp suits and loves talking to the camera. And anyone who has the guts to bail on Bill Parcells after 24 hours on the job -- without any replacement gigs lined up -- has some cojones. The NJ Jets are the biggest reason the Patriots are where they are today. Promoting and then quickly demoting Belichick probably left a sour taste in his mouth, and had a lot to do with his desire to get out of there. And Mo Lewis destroying Drew Bledsoe in 2001 is the reason that Brady got a chance to play. Thanks guys, xoxo! -Mike
  8. Hmm that's interesting, thanks for the heads up. I will see if there is anything on my end I can change to get it working. PM me a screenshot if you happen to catch one. -Mike
  9. The asterisk indicates that connection is flagged as roaming; it should appear whenever your system signal bars have the triangle. Mostly just helps identify which connections the roaming triangle is referring to, because you could be roaming on 1X but not EV-DO, and vice versa. It's completely separate from my indicator on Sprint band 26/41, although I can see how that might be confusing. It's not possible, but if it was, it would appear as (Sprint*)* in that case. I just wanted to add something subtle yet noticeable to draw attention to the fact that it might be a Spark connection without getting too specific in case it's wrong (I'm still trying to figure out the best way to reliably identify Spark). -Mike

    HTC EVO 4G LTE

Looks like evidence of some site work in your area -- let's be optimistic and say it was NV upgrades! -Mike
  11. Maybe you have the analogy wrong. What if Freebirds realized it was heading down the toilet before it was too late. Instead of folding, they launch their "Burrito Vision" project, guaranteeing to stay open and continue offering their most popular menu items while they radically renovate the restaurant and improve some of the menu items. During the project, some folks realize that the best burrito is no longer on the menu. A few people mention it. Then a lot of people mention it. Soon it becomes clear that the missing burrito was the best one on the menu. Freebirds doesn't want to bring it back because they need a special oven to cook that burrito--and only that burrito--in it. But the customers really want it, and whenever it comes back as a special, it is praised and sales spike. The oven is in the kitchen, but they don't want to maintain it for just one burrito. So they don't have to bring back that burrito. But wouldn't it help keep customers coming in the door? And wouldn't ignoring those customers just give them incentive to eat at Chipotle? -Mike
  12. I'm going to start a poll.. Who's more recalcitrant: A) AJ Mike C) WTF does recalcitrant mean? -BB
  13. I'm in the early stage of testing user notes right now, and exploring a few different options as far as site data goes. I am looking into methods to import data so at least those who have created their own market sheets can use it on the go. Still very much a work in progress -- I don't want to have to change it after it's released and possibly require everyone to start over with a fresh database in the app. -Mike
  14. LOL me?! I'm online Friday night answering questions, my friend.. and I think I'm far more chatty than Coach Belichick. I try cutting most of my posts in half before hitting submit! I think BB is awesome.. his skills as a coach are amazing (12-4 with no receivers and 7 starters on IR!) and the way he handles the press is priceless. It's all a game to him, and those who think he's serious aren't paying enough attention. The man is a genius. So.. I will take your shot as a compliment. GO PATS -Mike (EDIT: Your comment would have made way more sense if you replied after my 800/2600 LTE post )
  15. Wish: That I had a consistent/reliable/confirmed way to identify 800 LTE and 2600 LTE from within the app.. I'm getting closer, but I'm not completely confident with the methods. I don't want to implement something that only works some of the time, or only on some devices. That will only lead to confusion. Hopefully as the rollout expands, a reliable method will emerge that I can take advantage of. -Mike
  16. Exit by selecting "Exit" from the menu, or by using the back/home/multitask on your One? Selecting "Exit" will shut down everything the app started, including icons, alerts, and widget updates. Leaving the app by any other method just pushes it into the background. If it's happening when it goes into the background, something is up. Can you try to make replicate the bug, then go back into the app and hit About SignalCheck > Send Diagnostics? That will send me some info about what's going on behind the scenes. If you have a method to collect logcat output, I will take that too. -Mike
  17. Devices will be capable of connecting to any signals they can find. However, it was recently discussed that 800MHz deployment might be held back from sites that are not only physically located within restricted areas like the IBEZ, but also from ones that could broadcast signals that penetrate into these areas. Restrictions could be in place outside the IBEZ for other reasons, such as unfinished public safety agency rebanding in an area. An example of this was recently documented in Florida. -Mike
  18. Love that you threw SignalCheck on the store display, that's great! I believe that is the first screenshot of the app on a One Max that I have seen.. and I love it. Every possible parameter is appearing, including the LTE frequency.. awesome! Glad to see that new HTC devices still use enough of the same radio code to make it work. -Mike
  19. Still working on that, but for now you can use the app to get a strong hint of which band you are on. For Band 41, you will likely see the LTE MCC-MNC (number in parenthesis on the LTE provider line) change to 311490 or 311870, and the provider name inside the app will show as Sprint*. For Band 26, there are preliminary indications that the GCI does not end in 01/02/03.. but it is VERY early in the rollout so that is not confirmed yet. -Mike
  20. FYI, there is an Android bug (or hardware limitation) that prevents the SID/NID/BID being reported from being updated while on a call. That is why SignalCheck hides those values. I haven't tested it on the Nexus 5 or any other tri-band phones, but it affected every device released before it. I will do some testing with my N5 to see if it is reporting an updated SID/NID/BID in the moment between switching from LTE to 1X and placing the call. This could be part of the issue. -Mike
  21. The notification icons? They are graphics, not text.. about 300 of them total. I would add more options if it wasn't so time consuming to generate so many individual files. The text on the icons is already at the largest and clearest font that will fit within the space available. It won't be part of the next update, but in the near future I plan to re-create all of the icons at a higher resolution and add some new ones. That should increase the clarity on newer devices. Also plan to implement a "drive mode" with big fonts as suggested recently. -Mike

  23. Thanks for the offer, I already have enough data to use that I gathered myself.. it's figuring out the math--if there even is any--that's the tricky part, as you have discovered! The updates I mentioned are not in the version of the app available right now, but they will be in the next one. Still trying to iron out some pre-existing crashing issues before I push out another update. I keep the changelog up-to-date online, even with features that aren't in the public version yet.. keep an eye on it to see what's in progress if you're interested: http://www.bluelinepc.com/signalcheck/change-log/ -Mike
  24. Speaking of horses, I don't want to beat a dead one, but I don't think this discussion is being made by annoying complainers. Most of us who want a Nexus 5 already have it. I have come across some of the Sprint-specific code changes that digiblur referenced and agree with him. One of the common topics on S4GRU has been Sprint's well-known battle to retain customers, and from our viewpoint (limited as it may be, since we're just speculating based on the facts we do know), the "No Tmo-sold N5's allowed" policy is a head-scratcher. I completely agree that we don't know the exact reason Sprint is doing this, but at the same time the evidence seems to indicate that the reasons are administrative, not technical. Legere seems to relish every opportunity he can to take a shot at AT&T. So if Tmo N5's can be activated on AT&T, I feel that it's reasonable to make the assumption that Tmo is not the one preventing activations on Sprint. Owning a Nexus 5 (or any other device) is not a right, and Sprint has the right to say what is and is not allowed on their network. But for the sake of discussion of the health of the company, I agree with the others saying that Sprint shouldn't be doing anything to hinder someone who wants to become a subscriber. -Mike
  25. If you are trying to decipher a way to identify sites on the Sponsor maps from SignalCheck data.. there does not seem to be a correlation. In markets where the BSL is offset, there isn't much you can do without figuring it out by driving around the sites. However, you have noticed something about the sectors in that I recently learned myself; when looking at it in hex, the third digit from the right indicates the sector in some Sprint markets (in many/most Sprint markets, it's the right-most digit). I have already implemented new options in the app to select which sector "style" you would like the app to show as a Site Hint. Someone with some significant research experience in the field also passed along some information about 1X and LTE site IDs correlating with each other; it's proven true on Verizon, but I have not figured out if Sprint does something similar. Given a specific GCI, you can calculate the 1X BID that is on the same sector. Or, given a 1X BID and LTE TAC, you can determine the GCI. Again, this has only been confirmed for Verizon, but maybe there is something similar for Sprint. While there is no clear-cut "which site is BID 12345" answer (yet!), I finally have some logging and mapping features working, which will help make it easier to figure this stuff out. I have made a lot of progress on it this week, but it still needs some work. -Mike
