Do signal "bars" take Ec/Io into account?
WiWavelength replied to koiulpoi's topic in General Topics
An active (not blocked) CDMA1X carrier will never have Ec/Io greater than about -2 dB because the sync channel and paging channel take up some of the total channel power. In other words, the pilot channel cannot take up all of the channel power. If it did, then Ec/Io could be 0 dB. AJ -
What will Sprint do with Clearwire now that it owns it?
WiWavelength replied to newgroundsguru's topic in WiMax
Not lame, smart. Do you want *lame* people using the 20 MHz TDD carrier as a home broadband replacement and sucking up much of the capacity? AJ- 127 replies

Network Vision/LTE - Milwaukee Market (including Madison)
WiWavelength replied to sajanisch's topic in Markets
mr.phoneguy, if you are going to quote my post, please do not butcher it with an erratic edit and unenclosed tag. I fixed it for you. Yes, this is entirely correct. S4GRU does not host complaints. We have made that clear for well over a year now. If you want to learn and ask questions, you are in just the right place. But if you want to complain, take it elsewhere. http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/1197-s4gru-posting-guidelines-aka-the-rulez/ AJ -

Network Vision/LTE - Milwaukee Market (including Madison)
WiWavelength replied to sajanisch's topic in Markets
Members... Several of you are not sponsors, so you cannot view the Network Vision sites completed maps. You really have no solid idea how slowly or quickly Network Vision deployment is progressing in your own market, let alone around the country. As for discussions of switching to other wireless providers, that is walking a fine line. S4GRU's mission is not to recruit users to Sprint, nor is it to encourage users to switch to other wireless providers. No, S4GRU's mission is to educate about Network Vision. But if you do not have sponsor level access, then you are missing out on much of that knowledge. Regarding AT&T, be an informed consumer. Know that this company cooperates with NSA wiretaps, fights Net Neutrality, supports anti competitive measures in the wireless industry, lobbies against public broadband deployment, and seeks to shutter its copper DSL network in favor of LTE to the home. If you give AT&T money, you effectively support its anti social corporate agenda. AJ -

USCC will sunset its network in St. Louis Oct. 31, Chicago Jan. 31
WiWavelength replied to dedub's topic in General Topics
No problem. I took no offense and did not feel that you were questioning me. I just wanted to reassure you that I have the definitive info. In a nutshell, as odd as it sounds in 2013, St. Louis and Alton are technically separate markets. By population, St. Louis is a top 25 CMA, while Alton-Granite City is the smallest MSA based CMA in the list at number 305. And that is how USCC can hold a Cellular 850 MHz license in Alton but not in St. Louis. AJ -

WiWavelength replied to dedub's topic in General Topics
No, you are misunderstanding. Alton (i.e. Madison County) is a Cellular 850 MHz market for USCC. This Sprint-USCC transaction involves only PCS 1900 MHz spectrum and subs. Alton is not affected. Trust me -- I know what I am talking about. If you do not believe me, see the FCC license: http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsSearch/license.jsp?licKey=12769 AJ -

WiWavelength replied to dedub's topic in General Topics
That comes across as an exaggeration. He will be able to use native USCC at home in Jerseyville and at work in Alton. St. Louis will be roaming, probably on Sprint, but that should be included in his USCC plan. As for LTE, USCC was not going to deploy that in St. Louis anyway. So, nothing lost, nothing gained. Honestly, living in Jerseyville, a beggar cannot be a chooser. Your uncle is fortunate to have USCC. Heck, even VZW does not have native service in Jerseyville. AJ -
I am not convinced that the issue is solely hardware. HTC firmware algorithms seem quite conservative in acquiring and reacquiring LTE when in the presence of CDMA2000. Plus, very few operators are running CDMA2000/LTE hybrid networks, so HTC may have little experience in that regard. To make matters worse, Sprint is deploying LTE in nearly 2 GHz spectrum -- what works with VZW LTE 750 may not work as well with Sprint LTE 1900. AJ

No. USCC is not licensed Cellular 850 MHz in St. Louis, etc. Otherwise, USCC would not be exiting those markets. AJ -

Huh? USCC is providing service to him at home in Jerseyville. Alton is a separate CMA from St. Louis so is also not affected. USCC is retaining its Cellular 850 MHz licenses and network in the area. Only those markets where USCC operates a strictly PCS 1900 MHz network are being shut down. AJ -

Oh, I know. But a device "swap meet" might not be a bad idea. It would just need to have its own area in The Forums, probably limited to sponsors. AJ

I would prefer not -- unless we decide to dedicate a sub forum or thread to that end. But I think staff get a little bit of leeway, especially if we shell out for some devices solely for testing purposes. AJ
