GCI iPhone

Does anyone know how to acquire the GCI of a site on an iPhone? We can see Phisical Cell ID, Tracking Area Code and Cell Identity. Is there a way to derive the GCI with this information?

 

The Cell Identity is the base 10 GCI. In base 16 it would be 0x0B617A02.

Ok I feel very stupid now ????. Another question though: is there a way to use the GCI to obtain the cascade ID of a site?

Eh, kinda. Cascade ID order for the most part correlates with a GCI pattern at least in Samsung markets, but there are gaps in site IDs. So there's no way to precisely tell. Fortunately S4GRU has site IDs for a majority of sites except for some that have more recently come online. The best bet to start figuring out which site is which is to develop a spreadsheet containing your market's known site IDs, and log in the related field data. It's the toughest to match when data is lacking, but becomes progressively easier as a more defined pattern emerges.

I know. I was the one that reported 10x10 when it was first launched in Seattle. We've had it for quite a while now.

Hard to tell. With all of the clear conversions, B41 is pretty much everywhere - even more so than B25. If I see B25 at all, it's usually in the -114 to -118 range so I can never really get a good speed test (it's usually 8-15 Mbps down or so in the -114 to -118 range). B26 cannot come soon enough for us though...

Wait there's not band 26 or there? Tho it's close to Canada so I can see it. Thought it was already there

They filed for a bunch of B26 installations which were approved by the FCC but nothing live yet (at least that anyone has seen)

Are there drops to 3G due to not having band 26.

Well I used to have a dual band device (B25 and B26) and it was terrible. Extremely spotty. Lucky for us, clear had a super dense network and since nearly all of their towers have received B41, it is a lot better. For example at my house, I would see 1x/3G at dbms of -105ish with my iPhone 5S but now I get -108ish B41 from a nearby clear conversion. There are drops to 3G but they are few and rare because sites have been quite well optimized here. There are a lot of fringe areas where I'm at -114ish LTE where it would be nice to have B26 to fall back on though.

Nice. I live in Minnesota. Here Sprint needs better site dense even with band 26 sometimes there is drops to 3G. Tho the building I work at has alot of medal. So even my Verizon work phone loses LTE

All we really need in Seattle is an extra 5-6 dbm on LTE which I'm sure B26 will be able to provide. Also, funny you say that about Verizon because I've found Verizons coverage in Seattle to be TERRIBLE. No service at my house, I am routinely unable to establish a data session while out and about, lots of 1x - their site spacing could be a lot better. I am baffled by their root metrics score - I guess I just happen to only spend my time in their dead spots lol

Verizon has people they pay to drive around and, search for dead spots. So sometime that could change if someone finds it.

The firm that Verizon pays for their ads, RootMetrics, is based in Bellevue. Guess who else is based there?

 

If anything that makes the beef T-Mobile has with RootMetrics funny. This is probably the kind of thing that could get resolved over lunch.

    • Historically, T-Mobile has been the only carrier contracting with Crown Castle Solutions, at least in Brooklyn. I did a quick count of the ~35 nodes currently marked as "installed" and everything mapped appears to be T-Mobile. However, they have a macro sector pointed directly at this site and seem to continue relying on the older-style DAS nodes. Additionally, there's another Crown Castle Solutions node approved for construction just around the corner, well within range of their macro. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Verizon using a new vendor for their mmWave build, especially since the macro site directly behind this node lacks mmWave/CBRS deployment (limited to LTE plus C-Band). However, opting for a multi-carrier solution here seems unlikely unless another carrier has actually joined the build. This node is equidistant (about five blocks) between two AT&T macro sites, and there are no oDAS nodes deployed nearby. Although I'm not currently mapping AT&T, based on CellMapper, it appears to be right on cell edge for both sites. Regardless, it appears that whoever is deploying is planning for a significant build. There are eight Crown Castle Solutions nodes approved for construction in a 12-block by 2-block area.
    • Starlink (1900mhz) for T-Mobile, AST SpaceMobile (700mhz and 850mhz) for AT&T, GlobalStar (unknown frequency) for Apple, Iridium (unknown frequency) for Samsung, and AST SpaceMobile (850mhz) for Verizon only work on frequency bands the carrier has licensed nationwide.  These systems broadcast and listen on multiple frequencies at the same time in areas much wider than normal cellular market license areas.  They would struggle with only broadcasting certain frequencies only in certain markets so instead they require a nationwide license.  With the antennas that are included on the satellites, they have range of cellular band frequencies they support and can have different frequencies with different providers in each supported country.  The cellular bands in use are typically 5mhz x 5mhz bands (37.5mbps total for the entire cell) or smaller so they do not have a lot of data bandwidth for the satellite band covering a very large plot of land with potentially millions of customers in a single large cellular satellite cell.  I have heard that each of Starlink's cells sharing that bandwidth will cover 75 or more miles. Satellite cellular connectivity will be set to the lowest priority connection just before SOS service on supported mobile devices and is made available nationwide in supported countries.  The mobile device rules pushed by the provider decide when and where the device is allowed to connect to the satellite service and what services can be provided over that connection.  The satellite has a weak receiving antenna and is moving very quickly so any significant obstructions above your mobile device antenna could cause it not to work.  All the cellular satellite services are starting with texting only and some of them like Apple's solution only support a predefined set of text messages.  Eventually it is expected that a limited number of simultaneous voice calls (VoLTE) will run on these per satellite cell.  Any spare data will then be available as an extremely slow LTE data connection as it could potentially be shared by millions of people.  Satellite data from the way these are currently configured will likely never work well enough to use unless you are in a very remote location.
    • T-Mobile owns the PCS G-block across the contiguous U.S. so they can just use that spectrum to broadcast direct to cell. Ideally your phone would only connect to it in areas where there isn't any terrestrial service available.
    • So how does this whole direct to satellite thing fit in with the way it works now? Carriers spend billions for licenses for specific areas. So now T-Mobile can offer service direct to customers without having a Terrestrial license first?
