When will the public find out who is buying these licenses?

I also found it odd, that in the 2nd round, a license that was bid/won in the first round can be overbid.

This auction is being conducted anonymously.  To increase competition and help prevent collusion, the winning bidders will not be revealed until the auction has ended.

FCC Qualifies 23 Bidders in Upcoming Auction 96

The Federal Communications Commission today announced the list of companies that have been qualified to participate in Auction 96, which kicks off later this month. The auction will sell 176 licenses for the H Block spectrum, which falls in the 1915-1920MHz and 1995-2000MHz bands. Some of the qualified entities include American H Block Wireless, Michigan Wireless, NE Colorado Cellular, Spotlight Media Corp., and others. The FCC also disqualified a handful of potential bidders, including Cellular South, McBride Spectrum Partners, and Union Telephone Company. All the qualified bidders have been given instructions on how to bid and what their obligations are to participate. The FCC will hold a mock auction, to test the bidding process, on Friday, January 17. Official bidding for the auction begins January 22.

I would have linked the FCC docs but they are just a bunch of txt files

How difficult will it be to get phones with this band enabled?  Especially when none of the big 4 are bidding?

The owner(s) of the spectrum will need to petition to 3GPP to have a new band created that incorporates this spectrum, then chipsets would have to be made.

I'm wondering who the Michigan Wireless is, did they go after the Detroit license or the Traverse City and Northern Michigan licenses.  No first round bids for Grand Rapids.

The FRN for Michigan Wireless leads to PCS and AWS licenses that are linked to Bugtussel Wireless.

Looks like a Wisconsin based company going after BEA059 license, maybe 058 too.  I love their coverage map, looks like it was made with the tools that made the first NV/LTE coverage maps here.  Wish all wireless providers had maps like that

Edit in: no bids on 059, maybe 58 & 61

Does anyone know how much money is Sprint expected to get back for all the licenses nationwide for the costs of BAS relocation?

I wonder if the FCC met their 1.56 billion reserve price in this auction.

Not chance, they were just over 200 million at the beginning of round 3 and the new bids were bringing in an extra 20-30 million.

So what does this mean?  Didn't Dish plead to the FCC to set the reserve price of 1.56 billion and promised to pay that if the FCC approved the 2000-2020 MHz spectrum to be supplemental downlink?  Obviously they are well short so I assume Dish will need to pay the remaining balance to hit the 1.56 billion reserve price?

The first day concluded with Round 3.  No additional BEAs received a first bid this round, so more than 100 licenses are still FCC held.

No first round bids for Grand Rapids.

As usual, all cell providers hate Grand Rapids ;)

Actually, to be fair, Grand Rapids's reserve price feels like it's been set really high for the area, particularly when compared to other markets, even after accounting for the urban / rural difference.

Traverse City, MI at roughly $30k / 144k people = approx $0.2 dollars per person covered

Grand Rapids + Muskegon, at roughly $879k / 950k metro people = approx $0.93 dollars per person covered. (no bids)

Seattle / Tacoma, at $3,147k / 3,500k metro people = approx $0.89 dollars per person covered (bids)

Our spectrum is apparently worth a 4c premium over Seattle, despite us having only 30% of their population, spread out over a much larger area (requiring significantly more buildout / capex to cover those people)

    • Since this is kind of the general chat thread, I have to share this humorous story (at least it is to me): Since around February/March of this year, my S22U has been an absolute pain to charge. USB-C cables would immediately fall out and it progressively got worse and worse until it often took me a number of minutes to get the angle of the cable juuuussst right to get charging to occur at all (not exaggerating). The connection was so weak that even walking heavily could cause the cable to disconnect. I tried cleaning out the port with a stable, a paperclip, etc. Some dust/lint/dirt came out but the connection didn't improve one bit. Needless to say, this was a MONSTER headache and had me hating this phone. I just didn't have the finances right now for a replacement.  Which brings us to the night before last. I am angry as hell because I had spent five minutes trying to get this phone to charge and failed. I am looking in the port and I notice it doesn't look right. The walls look rough and, using a staple, the back and walls feel REALLY rough and very hard. I get some lint/dust out with the staple and it improves charging in the sense I can get it to charge but it doesn't remove any of the hard stuff. It's late and it's charging, so that's enough for now. I decide it's time to see if that hard stuff is part of the connector or not. More aggressive methods are needed! I work in a biochem lab and we have a lot of different sizes of disposable needles available. So, yesterday morning, while in the lab I grab a few different sizes of needles between 26AWG and 31 AWG. When I got home, I got to work and start probing the connector with the 26 AWG and 31 AWG needle. The stuff feels extremely hard, almost like it was part of the connector, but a bit does break off. Under examination of the bit, it's almost sandy with dust/lint embedded in it. It's not part of the connector but instead some sort of rock-hard crap! That's when I remember that I had done some rock hounding at the end of last year and in January. This involved lots of digging in very sandy/dusty soils; soils which bare more than a passing resemblance to the crap in the connector. We have our answer, this debris is basically compacted/cemented rock dust. Over time, moisture in the area combined with the compression from inserting the USB-C connector had turned it into cement. I start going nuts chiseling away at it with the 26 AWG needle. After about 5-10 minutes of constant chiseling and scraping with the 26AWG and 31AWG needles, I see the first signs of metal at the back of the connector. So it is metal around the outsides! Another 5 minutes of work and I have scraped away pretty much all of the crap in the connector. A few finishing passes with the 31AWG needle, a blast of compressed air, and it is time to see if this helped any. I plug my regular USB-C cable and holy crap it clicks into place; it hasn't done that since February! I pick up the phone and the cable has actually latched! The connector works pretty much like it did over a year ago, it's almost like having a brand new phone!
    • That's odd, they are usually almost lock step with TMO. I forgot to mention this also includes the September Security Update.
    • 417.55 MB September security update just downloaded here for S24+ unlocked   Edit:  after Sept security update install, checked and found a 13MB GP System update as well.  Still showing August 1st there however.
    • T-Mobile is selling the rest of the 3.45GHz spectrum to Columbia Capital.
    • Still nothing for my AT&T and Visible phones.
