Cheapest way to check out VZW AWS LTE

Let's face it: I'm a network nerd. I need to replenish my stock of SIMs since both my T-Mobile and AT&T prepaid SIMs mysteriously disappeared from my wallet (thank goodness neither are on autopay) but there's one annoying omission: VZW.

Actually, I have VZW. But it's in a single-band (for LTE anyway) device: a third-gen iPad. And swapping the iPad's SIM into my Nexus 5, which supports everything Verizon has except Band 13, gives me no signal.

Given that situation, does anyone have any ideas about getting a device...and service on said device...that supports VZW on AWS, and actually works with it? I'd get the prepaid JetPack service, expensive as it is, but the device being offered with it doesn't have AWS compatibility yet.

When you change Sims all the time that also changes your number right. Different Sim = different number with a different carrier? Sorry I couldn't help ya with VZW but I was just thinking about tmobile and ATT since I have an N5

I think I saw this elsewhere, but if you just want to know if Verizon AWS is available, throw your nexus 5 into LTE only mode and scan for carriers. If you see Verizon, then they have AWS there.

Seems reasonable enough. I can see T-Mobile, MetroPCS (aka T-Mobile), Sprint and AT&T this way.

I need to head down the road a bit and see if my phone will pick up CricKet here. If it does, that's a better indication of whether it'll pick up anyone's LTE that's in Band 4.

Yes, different numbers. I don't really care because I spend most of my time with the Sprint SIM in the phone anyway. And most of my communications aren't tied to my phone number.

That's what I thought and I want to try out T-Mobile and ATT but I use my number for almost everything

I've never really looked into it, but by the sounds of it I might have to check it out. Is that what you use?

Yes I have one number on google voice. It is free from google. It can automatically ring any (or all) of my phones when that number is called. When I call out from either of my android phones, it can show as coming from my same google voice number.

One google voice but several ways to configure it. Go to the google voice website and create a gv account. Note, I do not configure it for Sprint integration. Download the google voice app from the play store to your nexus 5. Setup google voice from the website to call your phone(s) for incoming calls. Setup the app on the phone to us google voice for outgoing calls. Works for all carriers.

Ahhh alright, so it just gives you a new # then whenever you get a new phone you just download GVoice so your phone calls come through your new phone?

Do you like it? I might try this but the app has pretty bad reviews

I only use it occasionally. Set it up while porting a couple phones to ting. Seems to work good for calls in and out and for voicemail. Have not used it for texting yet.

Gotcha, I think I'm gonna stick with my N5 on sprint until spring then maybe ponder over to T-Mobile or Att. Unless sprint buys T-Mobile then who knows what will happen after that

How do you scan? I've searched everywhere but I can't find instructions for accessing the scanning screen.

Get UML295 on eBay. You should be able to find it on the cheap side ~$50. Use your existing iPad SIM, you'll attach to both bands as long as AWS is available in your area. It's a Cat 3 USB modem Band 4/13 capable, also B7. That's as cheap as it gets.

Sounds reasonable.

What about the monthly service side of the equation? Anything available for less than the$50 VZW wants for Steal Ever...er...Share Everything?

Steal a VZW variant Galaxy S4. That should buy you the device and at least a few hours of free service.

You can activate iPad plan of your choice on the iPad itself. It's prepaid, and you don't even have to go to the store. Once the SIM is active, you can use it in any Verizon certified LTE device.

Interesting. So in theory my current iPad plan should work just fine. But it's not working with my N5 because that device's MEID + IMEI aren't on VZW's whitelist.

Off to eBay I go...

That is one of the best things about the n5, you can take it to.most carriers.

    • Since this is kind of the general chat thread, I have to share this humorous story (at least it is to me): Since around February/March of this year, my S22U has been an absolute pain to charge. USB-C cables would immediately fall out and it progressively got worse and worse until it often took me a number of minutes to get the angle of the cable juuuussst right to get charging to occur at all (not exaggerating). The connection was so weak that even walking heavily could cause the cable to disconnect. I tried cleaning out the port with a stable, a paperclip, etc. Some dust/lint/dirt came out but the connection didn't improve one bit. Needless to say, this was a MONSTER headache and had me hating this phone. I just didn't have the finances right now for a replacement.  Which brings us to the night before last. I am angry as hell because I had spent five minutes trying to get this phone to charge and failed. I am looking in the port and I notice it doesn't look right. The walls look rough and, using a staple, the back and walls feel REALLY rough and very hard. I get some lint/dust out with the staple and it improves charging in the sense I can get it to charge but it doesn't remove any of the hard stuff. It's late and it's charging, so that's enough for now. I decide it's time to see if that hard stuff is part of the connector or not. More aggressive methods are needed! I work in a biochem lab and we have a lot of different sizes of disposable needles available. So, yesterday morning, while in the lab I grab a few different sizes of needles between 26AWG and 31 AWG. When I got home, I got to work and start probing the connector with the 26 AWG and 31 AWG needle. The stuff feels extremely hard, almost like it was part of the connector, but a bit does break off. Under examination of the bit, it's almost sandy with dust/lint embedded in it. It's not part of the connector but instead some sort of rock-hard crap! That's when I remember that I had done some rock hounding at the end of last year and in January. This involved lots of digging in very sandy/dusty soils; soils which bare more than a passing resemblance to the crap in the connector. We have our answer, this debris is basically compacted/cemented rock dust. Over time, moisture in the area combined with the compression from inserting the USB-C connector had turned it into cement. I start going nuts chiseling away at it with the 26 AWG needle. After about 5-10 minutes of constant chiseling and scraping with the 26AWG and 31AWG needles, I see the first signs of metal at the back of the connector. So it is metal around the outsides! Another 5 minutes of work and I have scraped away pretty much all of the crap in the connector. A few finishing passes with the 31AWG needle, a blast of compressed air, and it is time to see if this helped any. I plug my regular USB-C cable and holy crap it clicks into place; it hasn't done that since February! I pick up the phone and the cable has actually latched! The connector works pretty much like it did over a year ago, it's almost like having a brand new phone!
    • That's odd, they are usually almost lock step with TMO. I forgot to mention this also includes the September Security Update.
    • 417.55 MB September security update just downloaded here for S24+ unlocked   Edit:  after Sept security update install, checked and found a 13MB GP System update as well.  Still showing August 1st there however.
    • T-Mobile is selling the rest of the 3.45GHz spectrum to Columbia Capital.
    • Still nothing for my AT&T and Visible phones.
