Force Verizon PRL & NV 3G speeds? Orlando FL

Hey guys, new to S4GRU but have been following the site for a while now!

I purchased an iPhone4s last year and am relatively happy with the device. What I am not happy about is Sprint's 3g speeds in my area (Melbourne & Orlando FL).

I recently read a few reviews on forcing the iPhone4S to a Verizon PRL to get 1.5-2.5Mbps rather than my 0.1Mbps. Has any one tried this with success?

Also, I understand forcing my PRL and roaming could cause my contract to be terminated. Has any one experienced good 3g speeds with the new NV and can you post pictures?

If the NV 3g speeds will be more consistent and can get me above 1.0Mbps, I won't even think about forcing a PRL. I am just to the point where I struggle to stream Pandora and don't even think about loading YouTube videos.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

The Verizon PRL works, but if you go over 300MBs, or your usage on Verizon is more then your Sprint usage, then they will notify you.

I was on vacation in Panama City Florida for a week and the days it rained, I used my phone. I was roaming on Verizon and hit 800 mbs. Didn't hear anything from Sprint. But I did have 2gb of sprint usage that same month.

It's a hit or miss. I am looking at houses in a neighborhood right now and sprint has no signal so I loaded up a Verizon prl for now. When I get home, I'll reload the Sprint one. :-P

I want to make a little jailbreak app that simply downloads either a verizon or sprint prl and changes the required files at the touch of a button.

Thanks for the insight. I was reading that messaging and voice calls can return errors when on the Verizon PRL. Are you experiencing this?

I can do this on my GS3.

only if I don't dial the area code. Text and mms/sms work fine. Data doesn't cut out either unless I'm using a lot at once (for days straight, etc.)

I just go to network settings and change it from automatic to roam only :)

I do miss loading prls on the fly though.

That's what I do on my gs3. I just change the prl. Idk if you can set it to roam only on gs3. Maybe that's an evo 4g lte feature.

I'm planning on making this app once the iPhone 5 is jailbroken. It wouldn't be too hard- just make a simple Obj-C GUI and make two buttons. One button for Verizon, other for sprint. After it has replaced the necessary files (and downloading the prl from a free hosting site), it will prompt you to reboot. The button scripts can be easily accomplished with bash, so my only problem is the Obj-C.

That was really off-topic.

You have the code to push the prl to nv?

It might get trickier with LTE depending on if it is a split prl or if it is like the evo where it builds the prl itself based on two files.

It would be simple enough on the 4 or 4S... Can't be sure about the 5 until I get it on Friday and it gets jailbroken!

Man, seeing all these AT&T and Verizon LTE speed tests make me want to jump ship even more! Their 50Mbps compared to my 0.2 lol!

What is keeping you guys to Sprint.. price, unlimited data, voice service??

I stay with Sprint for these reasons, in order:

  1. I am trying to do my part in keeping a viable and competitive carrier against a duopoly, which would limit choice and drive up prices for everyone
  2. Unlimited data. I really dislike keeping track of my data to the Nth degree, even though I usually only use 3-4GB per month. But I really enjoy not having to manage my wife/kids data usage, especially.
  3. Price. I can afford more by changing some of my priorities, but I enjoy the price I pay. It allows me to buy a phone cash mid cycle, if I so choose.
  4. Roaming. Sprint has great roaming coverage, better than any other carrier I'm aware of. There are lots of times I am the only person with service at remote work locations, and people are asking to use my phone.
  5. Customer service. I have Verizon for my work phone and my personal LTE hotspot. I had AT&T before moving to Sprint. In my experiences, Sprint has the best customer service.
  6. Network Vision and their LTE plans. Network Vision is bad ass and will create a state of the art network. Also, Sprint is taking their LTE nationwide on every tower. Sprint will have the densest LTE network. Sprint also has more LTE spectrum available for the future than any carrier when you consider Clearwire. Verizon is aiming to take LTE over it's entire footprint, but not every site. AT&T has said repeatedly it is focusing only on urban LTE and even said they will allow rural coverage to wither and die if they didn't get the Tmo merger passed. Sprint should surpass AT&T LTE coverage mid next year.
  7. I am rooting for the underdog, which I have a tendency to do.

Yes, there are large swaths of Sprint 3G that suck right now. However, this is a small window in time. In some markets, this won't matter any more in a couple of months. And this time next year, it will be a distant memory for 2/3 of their customers. and by Christmas 2013, Sprint will be competitive with Verizon and ahead of AT&T.

If this narrow window of Sprint 3G annoyance is too much for you to bear over the next few months, then you should find another carrier. Really. We won't hold it against you. But for the long run, Sprint is the best choice for tens of millions of people. As my number one priority outlines, it is critical that we prevent a duopoly from taking over our wireless market in this country. Fortunately, Sprint's plans for the future will give them a revived opportunity to bring back at least a viable third choice (not counting Tmo).

Thanks Robert,

Your posts truly are insightful and provide helpful information! I guess I will just have to make a decision, as it will come down to: Can I wait another year for my upgrade and 4G through Sprint or will I just pay the ETF, have it covered by the resale of the 4S, and move to Verizon with limited, but fast, data.

My cousin just got a new iPhone 5 yesterday but I can't figure out how to update the profile and PRL? I've been to the carrier info and about page but there is nothing to update? Thanks

I'm sorry to tell you that until a jailbreak is released, changing your PRL will be impossible.

I've loaded the verizon prl on my 4S before but for some reason Im not able to send or receive texts. Speeds are phenomenal but I need my texts. Has anyone figured how to fix that?

Reboot? I didn't have that issue. I don't need it anymore because of network vision, so I can't help much.

    • Just installed the update, and it's good!  As you recommended, I turned off both TA adjustments, and turned on displaying it when it's zero.  The value is basically spot-on.  It's bouncing between 18 and 19 for the Cameron Valley site, and it is in fact between 0.87 and 0.92 miles, as displayed in the app.  This is probably a better estimate of the TA values than any other device I own provides. As far as the -44 goes, I'll have to take it out and verify that it no longer records those cases. If this device didn't have that annoying reset problem, and got the Android 14 update (and in so doing supported TA on NR and continued to allow band locking), it would easily be the best device I own.  Easily.  And would be the device I standardize on for the 5G era.  I'll probably have to wait for a future device to come out with Android 14 and then see what happens. And I know I didn't have to, but I love SCP.  It is my primary tool for tracking the goings-on of the various networks and is very easy to use and work with across my 10 phones.  I am very happy to send a token of my appreciation your way now and then.  Thanks again! - Trip
    • Sorry, I misread your message -- yes, the app would show 0 if an invalid value was being reported. I don't think I had any MediaTek devices myself, but the beta testers have had a decent variety of devices over the years.   Sorry, I didn't word that very well in my last post -- I added an option to control display of LTE TA when it is 0. By default it will now be hidden (sadly a lot of devices do not show it) but anyone who wants to display it can adjust accordingly. There will be 3 user-selectable options related to LTE TA now -- the existing correction option, correction on LTE-TDD (which is independent/in addition to the existing correction option), and TA:0 display. In your case, I'd disable the TDD option and enable the TA:0 option; the defaults will be the opposite of what I think you need.   You did not have to do that, but I sincerely appreciate it, thank you! Beta update is rolling out now, let me know how it goes.
    • In order: This is very helpful to know.  Thanks. That makes a lot of sense, though it's showing me zero rather than nothing; it looks like if it's calculating a negative number, I'm seeing zero instead.  It makes me wonder how many devices you've tested against which use the MediaTek chipset.  This is only the second one I've used, and the first one was very, very old (didn't have B41), so it's possible that the MediaTek chip doesn't need the correction while others do.  Separately, I doubt that a real world case will ever see 1282, so I imagine any value above 1281 could be ignored. I would ask you to please not hide TA values of 0, or if you hide them by default, add an option to not hide them.  I am aware that, for example, the S22 doesn't report a valid TA value and always reports zero, but zero is a legitimate value and is useful to know when trying to identify sites. I'll look forward to your impending update, and I'm going to send along another donation if I can find the link.  Thanks so much, as always!  - Trip
    • I received the reports, thanks! You didn't catch it happening (it captures the diagnostics as soon as you hit send or long-click the connection banner on the main screen), and I had sent you an e-mail to clarify which value was -3.. but your screenshots confirmed my hunch that you meant RSRQ!   I know exactly what is happening here. Somewhere along the way, I learned that TD-LTE bands (33-53) needed a TA correction of -19 applied, and I confirmed it on several devices. Perhaps that is no longer universally true.. but what you're seeing SCP display matches that correction. Below 19 you see nothing, at 19 you see 0, and above that you see TA-19. The upper limit is 1282, which is why you see 1263. Your phone must report 1282 when the TA is unknown, which is not technically safe but I can work around that. Funny enough, I had a change to TA coming in the next update that had nothing to do with your issues.. TA:0 will be hidden moving forward, since several devices report 0 when it cannot be identified. I'll have an app update out shortly that addresses all of this, let me know how it works for you and thanks for the detailed feedback!
    • Mike, We ended up going out this morning to do errands in spite of the tropical storm.  I locked the phone on LTE B41, turned off the TA correction checkbox, and watched it carefully while out and about.  I have four screenshots for you. https://imgur.com/a/kCPTCnB First, I happened to get a screenshot of it doing the -44 dBm thing.  I also tried to send you at least one set of diagnostics showing the -44 dBm but I don't know where precisely in the process it collects the diagnostics.  Hopefully there's something useful in them. The rest of the screenshots are far more interesting.  All three were taken within seconds of each other in the CVS parking lot.  The phone's diagnostic screen shows a TA of 17, and oddly, the SCP diagnostics screenshot also appears to show a TA of 17.  But SCP's normal display is showing 0.  Not entirely sure what to make of that.  It looks like SCP won't show me a value other than 0 until I hit about 19 according to the phone diagnostic screen. It also appears that when SCP is showing a TA of 1263, that's the equivalent of a null value for the TA--no TA is calculated.  The phone diagnostic screen appears to show just "12" when that's happening; the SCP diagnostic screen shows 1282 in the TA section when that happens, a difference of 19, which is highly convenient given what I noted above about the TA value.  (I can't test that the phone diagnostic screen is limited to two characters and is thus truncating 1282 to just "12" as I suspect given where I am right now.  Had I known to be looking for it, I'd have tested in the middle of nowhere yesterday.) Anything catch your eye?  Anything I can do to help more?  - Trip
