Sprint adding Alcatel-Lucent’s lightRadio to maximize spectrum?

In the article "Sprint in talks for network gear from Alcatel-Lucent" it talks about the "Rubik’s Cube-sized device that contains radios and antennae and can be mounted on rooftops, phone poles and bus shelters to expand a network’s capacity in a given spot." This device can be connected to the infastructure and used to boost the performance of the network and reduce strain on the spectrum without the need to build the expensive towers in dense population areas. Sounds like an Airrave on steroids.

 

Could this be the future of network technology?

The article says they take all the pieces of a regular tower and cram it into an itty-bitty box. That's how it works.

Don't know what the reception or range capabilities are, but in congested areas it would be a life saver for dropped calls or spotty data.

Whats sad is that I tried for a year to get a WiMax antennae for my home to get my EVO4G/3D WiMax signal and even offered to pay for it but seemed nowhere to be found or even possible as only ones available were not set to the right freq.

 

I'd offer up the roof of my home to have a booster placed on in order to get better data to my whole neighborhood. lol

Yeah, the AirRave wasn't very expensive, but it only acted as voice and 3G and didn't have much range. It would be nice to have something like this mounted on my house so I get perfect reception all the time.

I agree with both of you, however I have 2 homes I would like one on so I can get better service. If anyone can find out pricing, please post about it.
