Wifi-3g handoff

Hi everyone, first time poster. Here is an article I found about seamless wifi-3g handoff.

The case in which this is useful is, turn on ESPN radio or NPR streaming, then go walk the dog. When I get out of range of home Wifi, stream breaks and I have to go into the app and restart it.

 

I understand NV will bring LTE-to-3g seamless hand off (huge improvement over current situation with Wimax). What about Wifi?

They need to figure out how to get the new EVO to pick up a 3g connection after leaving a WiFi area first. Right now you have to reboot the phone if you forget to turn off WiFi before you leave the area.

I leave my wifi on almost every time i leave the house and have never had an issue getting 3G. It as never been an issue on either my original EVO and the EVO LTE.

Happens just about everyday for me. Data falls on its face about twice a day now it seems requiring a reboot. The phone was great for the first few days but now it has gone to pot.

 

I think mine has an issue of leaving WiFi and the airave at the same time.

 

Going to call sprint tomorrow and have them send me a new airave with the 3g on it otherwise this phone is going back to the store.

Let's just say there's going to be technical issues getting an IP stream to hand-off between a wifi network and a wireless carrier. The best solution would be for the application to prebuffer the stream and reconnect before the buffer is empty.. Or just turn off your wifi before you start the stream.

Thanks, did you read the article in the first post? It details a technical solution to the problem. I am asking if Sprint is implementing that or a similar solution.

I do run another wireless stream from another router for guests that's on a different VLAN than everything else in the house. It's your typical residential wireless range from 802.11n. I'll have to try hooking up to it and see what happens. As it happened again this morning when I left the house.

I don't recall ever seeing any specific "3GPP" Release numbers in any Network Vision docs I have seen.

Yes, I read the document, they are planning on overcoming the technical issues by routing all of your traffic through a box/boxes owned by the wireless carrier that would act as a proxy for your device. This makes me nervous. I'm not sure anyone will implement this due to cost, not to mention how upset would you be if that box stopped working and you could no longer use wifi or 3G/4G to connect. Its a lot of overhead for a very small benefit. IPv6 already has mechanisms for this type of hand-off built in and I see that getting implemented before this.
