Stop System Update OTA notifications on Note 2?

I am going bonkers with this persistent System Update OTA on my Samsung Galaxy Note 2. I do not want to accept the update, as it removes my Write PRL feature that I use frequently.

I am willing to root it, but I want to wait until I return from my vacation in two weeks. I am going to do some device testing on my vacation, and I want a pure stock experience during that testing. However, I want the obnoxious notifications to go away. They were initially appearing once per day, then a few times per day, then hourly. Now it seems like the notification is there with a pop up window that has to be cleared every 5 minutes.

If anyone knows of any way to get that cleared and go away, I'd be very happy. I have had an update on my Nexus 4 since December that I have refused to take (because I lose LTE capability), and it just reminds me once per day and leaves an icon on my top bar. I can handle that. It's the annoying in your face notifications that Samsung keeps pushing that is driving me bonkers!

Without rooting you can't change any of the system files to stop the update notification process. With root there are several ways of course.

On a side note, I do know the latest baseband/update has the LTE scan timers changed plus I found the threshold has been relaxed which allows the device to use LTE in more places even though it is very marginal signal. So I do highly recommend the update to any Note2 and S3 users but of course it does remove the PRL Write option.

Any chance you will make the digiblur rom for the GS3? :)

Digi, was your fix you made on XDA just a flashable that restored a missing .apk?

If thats the case, maybe update to the latest, flash recovery so the patch can be flashed then revert back to stock recovery?

I would love to but I don't have an S3 to test with and not sure I feel comfortable about modding things in the blind. Not touching the wife's S3. I would get blamed if anything is wrong with it, but I still get blamed if something is "different" / doesn't work right from an OTA update!

Maybe I could whip up something and let you guys toy around with it and test it. It would just be a slow process.

The fix changes the HiddenMenu.apk file, never reverted to stock recovery except with an entire stock reflash.

I'd just root it. I know once you deny the update when rooted(if you even get the update via OTA). It won't show again. I know With root explorere I deleted play magazine and some apps. Never got the OTA on my GS3

Ever since I rooted my GS3 it would bug me the same way until I told it to update. When I do the update fails(error related to smartdevicemanager.apk i think?) then it goes away for a week. Id like to know how to either fix it to update or stop the message aswell..

Might be a stupid notion but why not use the toolbox to unroot then do the update and re root?

    • In the conference call they had two question on additional spectrum. One was the 800 spectrum. They are not certain what will happen, thus have not really put it into their plans either way (sale or no sale). The do have a reserve level. It is seen as great for new technologies which I presume is IOT or 5g slices.  They did not bite on use of their c-band or DOD.  mmWave rapidly approaching deadlines not mentioned at all. FWA brushes on this as it deals with underutilized spectrum on a sector by sector basis.  They are willing to take more money to allow FWA to be mobile (think RV or camping). Unsure if this represents a higher priority, for example, RVs in Walmart parking lots where mobile needs all the capacity. In terms of FWA capacity, their offload strategy is fiber through joint ventures where T-Mobile does the marketing, sales, and customer support while the fiber company does the network planning and installation.  50%-50% financial split not being consolidated into their books. I think discussion of other spectrum would have diluted the fiber joint venture discussion. They do have a fund which one use is to purchase new spectrum. Sale of the 800Mhz would go into this. It should be noted that they continue to buy 2.5Ghz spectrum from schools etc to replace leases. They will have a conference this fall  to update their overall strategies. Other notes from the call are 75% of the phones on the network are 5g. About 85% of their sites have n41, n25, and n71. 93% of traffic is on midband.  SA is also adding to their performance advantage, which they figure is still ahead of other carriers by two years. It took two weeks to put the auction 108 spectrum to use at their existing sites. Mention was also made that their site spacing was designed for midrange thus no gaps in n41 coverage, while competitors was designed for lowband thus toggles back and forth for n77.
    • The manual network selection sounds like it isn't always scanning NR, hence Dish not showing up. Your easiest way to force Dish is going to be forcing the phone into NR-only mode (*#*#4636#*#* menu?), since rainbow sims don't support SA on T-Mobile.
    • "The company’s unique multi-layer approach to 5G, with dedicated standalone 5G deployed nationwide across 600MHz, 1.9GHz, and 2.5GHz delivers customers a consistently strong experience, with 85% of 5G traffic on sites with all three spectrum bands deployed." Meanwhile they are very close to a construction deadline in June for 850Mhz of mmWave in most of Ohio iirc. No reported sightings.

They're completely avoiding talking about mmWave.
    • Was true in my market. Likely means a higher percentage of 5g phones in your market.
