  1. Have we confirmed yet whether it shows EVRC_NW even when calling some numbers that obviously aren't HD voice capable? From my understanding, the phone can still show EVRC_NW even when it is being transcoded on the network-side to something else like EVRC-B.

Or maybe I'm just crazy. Not all of the towers near me are are NV yet so I keep getting put onto legacy towers randomly.

Funny you mention this. Last night, I looked for the hell of it while calling a landline (automated system I use at work) and it said evrc_nw. Not sure why, but it did.

Yep, my phone says it every time, regardless of who I'm calling. (Landline, Sprint, Verizon..etc) My guess is that the site I'm connected to supports it, but it's just reliant on the recipient having EVRC-NW capabilities for it to be a true HD voice call.

  2. Hope so! The 800 has been spotty for weeks, and eCSFB is definitely not functioning. So I really hope a full swath of 800 gets switched on this week with the necessary CSFB upgrades.

My guess is they've just been testing in our markets, hence nothing showing up on the maps in recent 800 acceptance reports. The 800 probably isn't ready to go public. I missed 3 calls today because my phone wouldn't switch off of LTE to answer them - getting peeved but waiting patiently. :-)

  3. Syracuse has CDMA1X 800 broadcasting now. There is an exclusionary zone around the city. Nothing is shown accepted on the maps yet but my Nexus 5 connects to it any time it drops from LTE to make or receive a call.

My N5 is acting the same way down in Binghamton. No actual acceptances (For the entire upstate ny market!) but it's definitely connecting, in the same way you described off of LTE. I hope we see something on the maps soon.

  4. Wow, last night an update pushed for YouTube. One of the updates says "Improved video quality for Android 4.2 and above"

    They're not kidding!

While HQ over 3G isn't perfect, it's vastly improved and less grainy in some cases. I'm much happier now. Funny this happened a day after making the thread.

  5. Just tested over LTE using a speed meter app called "Internet Speed Meter Lite." It put a little gauge in the status bar so I can see how fast my network activity is at any given time, really neat.

On LTE, I was consistently pulling 3-5Mbps streaming HD video. So luckily we aren't capped by default. On a loaded site, I completely understand throttling to 1Mbps and wouldn't complain. I'm glad I don't have to seek out a VPN to bypass it. At least in my area.

I guess the 3G HD problem is primarily an app issue. And I guess that's gonna remain until further notice. :-)

  6. It must be. For Nexus 5 users on AT&T where "3G" is actually 4-6Mbps, it must be very frustrating, as the quality of the video doesn't seem to be determined by connection speed.

Maybe this will be corrected in the next update, who knows.

I remember on my jailbroken iPhone I could install "My3G" to trick apps into thinking they were on Wi-Fi. Does such a thing exist for Android?

My Sprint 3G is pretty much capped out here at work and it sucks I can't fully utilize it. 2.7Mbps out of a GMO with old antennas is pretty nice!

  7. Is there a way to trick the Nexus 5 YouTube app into thinking it is on WiFi?

At first, I thought I was being capped to 1Mbps due to the framily restrictions, but I installed a data meter and I'm not even exceeding .5Mbps while streaming. The quality is crap, even when "HQ" is selected. (Which gives me no noticeable difference)

I get nearly 3Mbps on my 3G connection at work, and I'd like to be able to use some of it! This wasn't an issue on my iPhone 5C, even on 3G.

(Sprint only limits streaming to 1Mbps when the cell site is under heavy load, correct? Not 100% of the time?)

  8. Interesting. That will give me a reason to tell my girlfriend to upgrade to 7.1 then, and lose the jailbreak. It'd be cool if someone could confirm that HD voice didn't work on 7.0.6, but started working on 7.1 in an HD enabled area.

Somehow she inherited my 5C when I got a Nexus. Not sure how that happened.

  9. Why strange? It was just ready.... Robert would probably agree with me. IT is easier to accept towers fast outside metros first... Dansville and Brockport are outside major population...

It just looked a little weird, an LTE acceptance in the middle of nowhere.  :D Rochester, Syracuse, Binghamton, etc. were all untouched at the time.

  10. This is so frustrating...I believe you guys but why is Sprint telling me stuff that is not yet there.  Glad my contract is up...just for the ease point of view i will give it a whirl with my N5 on the now network, but I will be leaving in the next couple of months.  This is plain stupid.

If you're not gonna stick around and get educated on the timeframe of when your area will be complete, then by all means, join another carrier that has known good service where you live. But if you enjoy paying less, sit down, do a few hours of research, and wait a few months for things to improve. Sprint is going to be a cellular behemoth this year.

  11. Given that hd voice only works on 800 I think eventually phones will default to the 1x carrier in the 800 spectrum in the future. I am pretty sure this has been stated by sprit or has been highly eluded to. This will probably happen when 800 is more ubiquitous.

I don't think this is true. If it only worked on 800, people would only be able to utilize HD voice in areas where 1xRTT was weak. Not optimal.

  12. You probably don't need 1x800 wherever you are. People feel this need to always have to be on 1x800. It's no different, other than propagation. If it's present, and your phone needs it, you'll connect to it, and only be able to see the connection during a call on triband devices. You'll always be idling on 1xRTT.

Interesting, I was wondering why it always snapped back to 1xRTT. What if you're out of range of 1xRTT, it must be possible to idle on 1x800 in certain circumstances right?

  13. So to be clear, the link was targeted… but if you HAVE the link, the deal will work, right?

    (Link meaning sprint.com/framilyswitch)

It's getting confusing, some people are making it sound like it only works if Sprint specifically sent the link to you. That doesn't appear to be the case once I click it.

I might be able to get 7 new Sprint customers on board with this.

  14. Can't find 1x800 anymore in Endwell, I think it must have been in testing temporarily. I hope it comes in full force soon though. Could really use it on the outskirts where there is limited coverage not too far from town.

Ithaca had some fast LTE on Saturday! I had a -105 signal and it was still pulling down 17Mbps. Downtown should be a much happier place for Sprint users.

  15. My Endwell 800, I think this is the Skye Island Drive site. It said "Odell Ave" briefly when my call was over:

Hopefully this means the Binghamton area is getting turned on in a cluster, and that hasn't been reflected in the maps yet.

Oddly enough, it was very difficult receiving phone calls last night. Two people sent angry texts asking why I didn't pick up. When I told someone to retry, I stood by the window, and it came in. It took about ten seconds of me flicking the answer toggle, and the phone freezing for it finally to latch on to 1x800 and actually answer the call. First time I had seen 1x800 at home, and my girlfriend did not share any of that joy with me during the call.

Does this mean eCSFB really isn't working here, or are the delayed calls actually normal on eCSFB enabled sites?
