  1. I thought this was the "referral rewards program" thread, not the "complain about service in Florida" thread.

    *cough*

I've helped a couple customers do this. The cards do take a while to arrive, though. About as long as Mail in Rebate cards, honestly.

Thanks!! I figured it would take till around..Thanksgiving or so before we see the rewards card...I think by then I'll be ready to take advantage of the Upgrade program...depends on what's out in the triband department by then.

If I'm not mistaken, the LGG2 drops Oct 25, correct?

  2. Oh, I see.

In other news, Asian racism really bothers me, but it's seen as normal, even passe, in many English speaking countries. Such unthinking acceptance is the core of it.

Actually, there wasn't anything remotely close to racist meant by my statement, but feel free to twist it that way if you like.

  3. There is/are exceptions but that is not normal.

Is there a 'normal' per se? I thought they adjusted the antennas depending on the area and population...

My wife, at the plant, is getting LTE signal in "higher" places (up in the control room, further up the elevation than normal)...and I bet she's probably 10 miles or more from the nearest LTE tower. Sensorly shows her "dot" on the mapping she tried to do, but when she left the control room, she lost it. And looking at the closest tower that has been completed, I can't decide which one she's getting that LTE from. They are both pretty far away.

  4. The only updates I've had for PS3, and I get them AS they come out, are for new features or security...which the past 6 have only been minor (we're on 4.46 now)

It's not that often, as you might think, that Sony pushes firmware. The last 3 have only been April, March, October. Here's a list: (most of these were small, from 4.00 to 4.10 was under 30mb, 4.10 to 4.11 was under 10mb, etc) The only big updates they have are full version changes, like from 3.73 to 4.10...when the first number changes, it's a major change, with new features, the second number is usually a new app or changes in the XMB, and the last number indicates a small security patch or add-on)

  5. I'm asking because I seriously don't know, but some have mentioned all the things you get with the 360 currently....like HBOgo and such...

If you pay for Xbox subscription..whatever the level is, where you can get that stuff, do you get HBOgo viewing privileges with that? Or, like with my Android app, do you have to currently be subscribed with your satellite/cable in order to view it?

I know many people use their xbox/ps3 for media and things besides gaming...but the most I've ever done with my PS3, and I mean ANY of the 3 Ps3s I've had, is watched ONE two-hour movie on Netflix. I have satellite on the same TV as my PS3, so if I wanted to watch TV, I would use the device I pay monthly bills to do so with...but when I want to  game, I flip on the PS3,

In fact, I can't remember the last time I turned on the Ps3 to do something besides play CoD;BO2, or Battlefield 3...

But I wondered since I saw that if MS included viewing subs with the 360-xbox live sub, or if that was separate...

It would be great if it was an all-inclusive thing, but I'm sure I would have heard something about it if this was true..but had to ask...

Same could be said for PS3 tho, if the $49 I paid for PSN+ included Netflix, Amazon, etc as part of it..like a licensing deal with all PS3 users, so they could use the device only to access unlimited streaming with those apps for the PS3...but I know that's not part of the PSN+...

I actually only paid for 1 of my 2 PSN+ subs....got one year free with my white PS3 purchase back in March...

  6. Is it just me, or do we have a multitude of people who are hardcore to one or the other?...in the same manner that we're biased to Sprint, many of us here seem to be biased to one or the other in consoles as well...which there's nothing wrong with. Back when the PS3 outage occurred, I was nearly livid with some people that started dogging Sony for letting it happen...but ANON was firing off targeted attacks at not just Sony, but others as well. Even the Dept of Justice got hit, the NSA...they all were targeted by Anon's DDoS attacks...because so many people could download the LOIC software and join them with near transparency...

I remember the Westboro attack was the only one that I really agreed with them on...the others....Sony is a company, out to make money...just like Microsoft is. Sony prosecuted someone who hacked their console and released the hack for money...what were they supposed to do, offer him a job? Sony has a track record of bringing in people like that who are of questionable background, but not so much with folks who hack their investment and use it for financial gain...selling those USB dongles was what brought the wrath of Sony...not creating the hack...plus it was discovered that an inside person at Sony released the keys that were used to open up the system.

At any rate, I feel about Sony the way I feel about Sprint...they have been in the low spot with the PS3 not doing so well, and I'm glad I was on PS+ and playing along during their high-times for the life of the PS3..it's been a great console with some really great games...

  7. It wasn't until sony made their E3 presentation that MS decided to pull back on all the crap they had in store for the Nextbox...like DRM and always on...if they can suddenly fix it with a software patch, then they can suddenly add it back with a software patch. You gotta figure they are going to recoup that lost revenue SOMEWHERE...

Then, compare studios. Microsoft 1st party devs:

    343 Industries

    Lionhead

    Turn 10

    Rare

    Bigpark

    Black Tusk

    Lift London

    Victoria (MS)

...not sure if anymore have joined the flock, but that's the big names.

then, compare that to Sony's 1st party devs:

    Guerilla Games

    Naughty Dog

    Santa Monica

    Quantic Dream

    Housemarque

    Insomniac

    Polyphone Digital

    Sucker Punch

    Evolution

    Media Molecule

    SCE Bend

    SCE Cambridge

    SCE Japan

    SCE London

    San Diego

    SCE Liverpool

    Team ICO

...then you have the 3rd party devs, and the PSN / XBLA devs...

But just comparing devs, Sony has come a LONG way from where they were with 1st party studios back in '07...and that is what gets games on the shelf.

Personally, I'm thinking the Ps4 will put Sony back where they should be...Microsoft rushed to beat Sony with Xbox360 and had a multi-million dollar mishap because of it. I don't know of anyone who has an Xbox from that first year's production run that can still say it's going strong.

My brother in law had the xbox thing...was big into Microsoft and constantly insisted it was better than Sony..

Then, his first Xbox had RRoD. Fixed by MS. His second had DVD prob...fixed by MS. His 3rd HDD prob...fixed by MS also.

He bought a fourth, had the same DVD problem as the 2nd one, and put it in the closet. When I bragged to him that I still had the same Ps3 that I bought back in 08...compared to him being on his 4th Xbox in 3 years...he went and bought a PS3 too. And many other people had the same issues with Xbox...maybe their "refurbs" just weren't that great...but everyone I know who got a RRoD and sent for a refurb had trouble with them...

Just as a comparison, I never had any trouble with a PS3 like that..and i am on the 3rd PS3 since they came out. The 2nd PS3 is still running, in the den...and the kids play it. The first one, I just retired...because I wanted a new one and didn't have a use for 3 PS3's when I got the white slim back in February...so, instead of keeping it around, I salvaged parts and threw the fat PS3 away...

But it still worked fine when I trashed it...I just wanted a new one for the energy savings and heat dissipation....after 5 years of harsh gaming, I figured it would eventually have problems, and I didn't want it to give me issues when I wanted to play..and have to worry about buying a new one when I didn't have the extra money...so I made the decision to buy 2 new PS3s within a 1 year period so I could retire the 40gb fat.

  8. I think that the whole reason that people begin considering PlayStation is the whole free PSN thing. I don't mind paying 60 dollars each year if it means I don't have to worry about me losing live for months at a time or having access to features like controlling my cable box and such.

PSN has never been down for over a month, even when it was hacked..by Anon.

But I'm sticking with the Sony name. I'm on my third ps3, the kids have the second ps3, and I just retired the first one because I wanted a slim. I removed its hard drive tho and finally threw it away last year...but my 40gb fat never had any prob except for a laser replacement, I used to do 16 hr killzone and battlefield 2 bad company sessions...for days at a time..

And now I'm doing 8hr sessions of battlefield 3 or cod black ops 2 every day almost. I'm even thinking about waiting to get the new grand theft auto because it's so close to ps4 release...not sure yet.

My slim sat above that steaming hot directv dvr for those sessions in my media center, and so did my fat ps3...neither ever had heat issues. Have you ever vacuumed the exhaust ports or blew them with canned air? Just under the eject button you can shoot air in, and it comes out the back vent, same for the hard drive cover.

  9. Joe, I'm using (supposedly) 600mbps rated PLA's...they are new, and unreleased, so I can't detail much on them. The questions I ask will have to be broad, general....but, I noticed that when I try to use it, there are 3 lights on each PLA.

Light 1 is supposed to blink when you first plug it in, then it should stay lit after a few seconds. Then, you plug in PLA 2, and the light blinks a few seconds..then goes steady. Once the lights are steady green on both, you press the security button on PLA1, for two seconds, and it will start making light #2 blink. Then go to the PLA2 within 2 minutes and press the security button for two seconds also...and when they both stop blinking, the security is set.

Then, you plug in your router to PLA1, and your device that needs internet into PLA2.

The 3rd light is a sign of the speeds...green means you have 100+mbps between them....amber means you have between 50mbps and 80mbps, and red means you have less than 50mbps.

I couldn't get them to even factory reset, using the button that is recessed, like you would find on a router.

I got an email this morning saying they have found some issues and are addressing it now in their lab, and by next week on Monday, we'll have an update to the software plus the firmware will be pushed...

Maybe this will fix those issues, until then, I have a red light on the one beside the router, and the one feeding my Toshiba TV is amber...

And the network tool designed to see these PLA's says that I have 60mbps and 10mbps between them as connection speeds....

Supposedly, this particular one uses the neutral to create it's backplane network...so data travels on the neutral leg.

I know in some places, they hook up the 2 insulated wires, and the copper, uninsulated ground is not used (which I despise)..

But before I inherited this house, I had a "step-parent" that loved to take shortcuts..and he just "thought" he was an electrician.

I've found a couple of outlets in here that he didn't connect the copper ground on, and only used the "hot" and "neutral"...or white and black...usually he would just cut the copper off.

I hate that people do that, if they only knew how dangerous it is to have electricity problems...

This same step-parent, when the house was bricked up, he was too lazy to buy new triplex and run from the meter to the inside...so what did he do? He went and bought some copper screw-type clamp and cut ALL THREE lines of the triplex...used these clamps to put them back together once the footing was poured and some of the brick was laid...

I found it when the neutral on the meter wore out due to a loose ground, and i had to replace the entire box...

I was like...WTH is wrong with this man...he could've burned this house down. Thanks to his half-assed attempt at clamping together triplex, my central air unit burned out, and I lost my stove and water heater...and we had to leave because the power had to be turned off at the meter until the power co could come out and pull my meter...

This is an example of what he used to "mend" the triplex...then taped it with electrical tape and buried it...

Guess I'm lucky I found it before it caught something on fire.

I actually have a picture of it, and I also took a picture of the inside breaker box before I replaced it (which this problem also burned it out too, the aluminum was almost a copper/bronze color from the dang heat in the electricity)

I said all that to say this: My electrical outlets may not be the most dependable for PLA testing...I know which ones IVE personally done and fixed right...so I may have to use those so I know for sure I"m getting the copper ground like I should be, since it's used to create the network/data transfer.

  10. I don't ask too many questions anymore because I'm pretty sure they've been answered. . I just hope I'll happen upon my answer while sifting through, which usually happens sooner or later (so far). I haven't had much luck finding the answer to the difference in a 4g only and 3g/4g tower...I know it's here tho

  11. Ok, I've done all sorts of things with routers...and still love learning things when I can..and I became a member of some beta groups in order to play with new toys before they hit the market... So when I got accepted into a beta for a {NAME OF COMPANY} Powerline Adapter beta, I was excited, but afraid since I didn't have much experience with those. I know the adapters use your existing electrical wiring to create a "backplane" and uses that as your network to put internet to places where it's otherwise inefficient to run cat5 or wireless wont reach.

So I've had them for about 3 days...and in that time, I've totally confused myself even more, probably more to do with the beta version of the firmware.

    At first, I had this:

    2nd DSL line ===> Asus RT-N15 Gbit ====>PL #1(source)....

I came to my desktop with the 2nd PL, and wanted to give my desktop internet via the Asus RT-N15...

To do this, I had to unplug my Buffalo router and plug in the PL #2, then I plugged the Buffalo back in to the filtered AC jack on  PL #2...

Buffalo isn't tied to 2nd DSL line at all...it does PPPoE for 1st DSL line, has the Airave 2.5, wife's PS3, Toshiba TV, "Hopperjunk",  and the Netgear WNDR3400 that I use in conjunction with a WNR2000v2 with DD-WRT to make a repeater. So rule out the Netgear WNDR3400 and Netgear WNR2000..they aren't really "used", and all of this is on DSL line 1 anyway.

So, everything was doing OK...the Asus RT-N15 has gigabit ports (until now I didn't realize that I only have 1 router with gigabit...I'm not sure on the Ubiquiti Airrouter, but I think it's just 10/100...but I realized I need to have a router sale and get rid of the (unused) Belkin I have, the (unused) Linksys e2400..barely touched the Ubiquiti Nano Loco M and it's sitting in a drawer now...

At any rate, so I'm doing good with the connection...it appears to work fine from my desktop when I access the internet...and I started running Lan Speed test and putting it to the test...

Suddenly, my ps3 in the bedroom, which is also connected to the Asus with a cat5, wont let me join any games. It was online, showed my friends, and even let me chat in the lobby while waiting on a game. But soon as I would try to join, it would dump me back to the main screen. So i figured it was a fluke, and changed back from using the Asus to using the Ubiquiti - which performs the PPPoE to the (whatever AT&T's wireless $100 gimmick is to make people sign a contract now, it's a black router with all the wireless and junk, which I turned off promptly at receiving it)....

Soon as I got back up with the Ubi router and the PS3 changed back to it's previous settings for that router, all was good again.

So I just left it that way and when I finished playing, I started LAN speed test again.

This time, since I wasn't using the PS3, I figured I would do a 1gb file test, across the powerline, and see how that did.

The Buffalo, which is plugged into the filtered AC on the PL giving my desktop access from the Ubi+DSL #2 suddenly lost it's connection.

And for the life of me, I couldn't get it connected back until I unplugged the Buffalo from the filtered AC outlet and plugged it back in normal, as it was before the PL adapter was introduced to the scene.

I bet I confused a bunch of folks...but I have two DSL lines, the one with the Ubi router operates my PS3 in my bedroom, Vonage, Roku3 in the bedroom,  and my GS3's when we are within range of it.

The DSL line with the Buffalo operates the Airave, wife's PS3, desktop, Toshiba Smart TV, an "entertainment device" that I'm beta testing (it streams stuff like Netflix, Hulu+, Vudu, etc)...I can't say the name of it either since it's still in beta and I'm under the NDA for it..

  12. We've found that there is considerable possibility for cutting costs," Mr. Son said Sprint employees are gonna be squeezed. Japanese companies - yes I've worked for one and all my peers agree - are brutal when it comes to personnel costs. The upside is that consumers are gonna benefit.

While this is true, the Japanese have some of the strongest worth ethics and morals that you can find. I have also worked for the Japanese, Honda manufacturing to be exact - on an assembly line in their Honda Pilot + Odyssey plant ...and they are great people. BUT..they want people AT work, no 40 hour weeks will do....you gotta be dedicated and such. Look at what happened with the guy and the Fukishima-Daiichi nuclear plant. He eventually killed himself to save face.

A term we rarely hear in this country...but to them, it's BIG. Saving face means so much to them and their heritage.
