Got the S20 Ultra, Buds+, and 44mm Watch Active 2 for around $1000. Samsung also sent me an email this morning giving me my extra $35 credit since I made my preorder before I could get my reservation email.

How does one get this deal?? Do tell!?

5G is underperforming, and is underbaked both on the handset and the network side. The new Qualcomm chipset X60 is finally a chipset worth incorporating on the handset side.

This also shows just how tight and narrow a rope Masa had to walk. If he approves more funding early, Sprint would surely grow organically. But completely starve the company, you would devalue your own asset costing you a sh$t ton of cash. (Which it did to a certain degree)

Sprint has never been in danger of collapse, the issue has always been short term profits. These folks just could not fathom investing in Sprint and waiting 10 years for a turn around, so Masa did the next best thing in his eyes, starve the companies capex and put on a dog and pony show for the public to convince them that this merger is not only a great idea, but the only way Sprint would survive (and Tmobile to a certain degree)

Yes I'm still salty 😒 lol

For those that are interested, Kelly Hill has been running a series called Insights from the Sprint/T-Mobile US merger ruling on rcrwireless.com. The judges ruling is a 170 pages long. In part 4 what stood out to me is that T-mobile has a network efficiency model (NEM) that it used to predict sector congestion in order to direct investment to alleviate it. It is used to predict traffic patterns over a a 5 year period. A version called the Montana Model incorporated a combined network model. The Montana Model calculated that New T-Mobile’s network marginal costs would be 1/10 of standalone T-Mobile and the value of its increased speeds would be more than $15 per month per subscriber. Sprint of course did not have such a model for its network and were flying by the seat of their pants. Why am I not surprised!

Another nugget was the fact that by the time Claure came on board in 2014 Sprint was already $33B in debt and was losing $5B a year. That's when they decided on small cells and monopoles. But, "That plan, Marrero wrote, “failed massively.” Sprint, he went on, “installed only 2,000 of its projected 75,000 small cells and only one of its projected 35,000 monopoles, which was also removed in short order.” While that effort was failing, Sprint was only spending about $1.3 billion in traditional network investments, he said, while competitors were putting at least $6 billion each on their respective networks. In addition, Marrero wrote, Sprint is currently underperforming on its five-year infrastructure plan from 2018: it has deployed only 14,000 of a projected 24,000 small cells and only 200,000 of its projected 776,517 Magic Boxes. In 2019, it underspent the five-year plan’s network investment by about $1.5 billion."

While underinvesting in its network, Sprint went on a massive price cutting and handset subsiding spree that denied the revenue to invest in its network.

Like I said, a fascinating series.

    Despite all of that..

Sprint basically forced all the other carriers to announce massively under-performing and premature 5G launches. Its quite amazing, even after nearly a year of 5G being a thing, Sprint is waay ahead according to opensignal..

I haven't tried between 10pm and 7am in a long time but all other hours of the day it's about the same as the screenshot.

You can see in the screenshot that when the test starts its always higher and then slows down a lot. at the start it usually peaks at around 30Mpbs

I bet it's backhaul (or lack thereof)

Here are 3 speed test the same day at different M-MIMO sites.

    1. 30th Ave Station in Astoria at 8:30am
    2. Broadway station in Astoria at 6:30Pm
    3. 5th Ave and 34th St. Outside Empire state building. At 6:00pm

What could cause the 2nd site to perform so poorly. If it was congestion wouldn't the upload be much slower. Been having these slow speeds for a few months now.

Maybe backhaul or just congested. Does it perform the same at all times?

There have been tons of complaints about issues with VoLTE, not dropping calls due to poor LTE coverage.

This pretty much mirrors Tmobiles performance while VoLTE was being deployed. Id be willing to bet, that EOY phone performance numbers will be considerably better. VoLTE performance has gotten way better over the past 6 months.

I think that the other three carriers pretty much ignore Sprint's pricing. Sprint is no longer a price setter. They know that no matter what Sprint does they don't need to compete on price with Sprint. The perceived quality of their network will overcome whatever price. So basically Sprint is competing against itself denying itself the money to improve its network.

Maybe in Sprint's weak markets that might be the case, but definitely not in there strong ones..

I've filed hundreds (maybe even 1000+) of detailed reports over two years and they've done exactly nothing. If you live in a place where they make money then they'll fix your issues. If you live in an area where they don't make any money or make very little money (where I live, where mum lives), nothing will ever happen no matter what you do. So it depends on where you are.

It's not that simple. It depends what the issue is. In places where they are not spectrum or density constrained they can adjust antenna tilt or optimize band threshold, or even fix downed sites.

But if your issue is coverage or capacity limation related, there isn't much they can do. Regardless, you should always report issues, because they do indeed go through the reports and try to address issues if and when it's possible.

Does Sprint really look into the network feedback comments? I’ve posted a few feedback comments through the app in regards to the network in the last week.

100% they do! Sometimes they tend to the issues quickly, other times the solution is not that straight forward or it's low priority. I've had pretty good success with it.

What would have been nice, is to get some sort of confirmation or update that they worked on the issue rather than find out weeks or even months later that they fixed it and you had no idea it's even been looked at.

    Bottom line, report it!

I was debating whether to get the OnePlus 7T Pro as a secondary phone, but I couldn't decided between the Sprint OnePlus 7 Pro 5G or the T-Mobile OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren version. Upon researching them, it's a shame that the Sprint version has less ram, an older processor and slight less battery but whats worse is that its not as future proof as the T-Mobile version since it has less bands. (Understandable since the McLaren version just came out recently and the Sprint version came out last May).

The Sprint version doesn't have NR 5G band  71 / 600 MHz that T-Mobile uses for their 5G. So if the merger gets approved, the T-Mobile version can use both Sprint and T-Mobiles 5G. The Sprint one only uses the Band 41. Bummer.🤬

    Band Compare

The kicker is that according to numerous youtube videos of both phones on their networks, the Sprint version seems to be able to deliver better speeds.  Decisions, decisions.

At this point it would make sense to build a single SKU device for both Sprint/Tmobile, but i guess its not that simple considering the CDMA requirements on Sprint.

Why are data speeds slow in the Bronx and around some parts of the FDR?

I would think with some parts of NYC lit up with 5G, that Massive Mimo would helo increase speeds. Lately some areas of the FDR are getting really slow, I can’t even load Google Maps.

They just recently lit up the smaller third carrier due to spectrum limitations. It's only 10mhz vs the usual 20. So nothing north of 170th street sees either 5G or 60mhz of LTE. But on the bright side that extra 10mhz is definitely helping and I also noticed more network optimization.

Best thing to do is report any place where you notice any slow speeds, since the network has been working pretty well for the most part, they tend to these minor pockets faster than usual.

Has anyone else noticed a massive slow down of LTE specifically on MIMO site after 5G was turned on. There are two sites in Astoria Queens thats i can get over 10Mbps no matter the time of day. Upload speeds are unaffected at around 10 to 15 Mbps. Speed test have been done when in view of the tower as well. I wonder if its a backhaul issue either Fibre or microwave since the 2 sites are really close to each other.

It's been the opposite for me as well. Been finding that Sprint is going back and adding more capacity on a few sites where they are spectrum limited (north of 170st in the Bronx and beyond.)

I’ll bet they’re testing, because I’m puzzled as to why I would have B41 as secondary and B26 as primary if they weren’t testing. Shouldn’t it be the other way around? Maybe because B26 upload was stronger? Pardon me for my lack of knowledge...

Makes sense to have B26 as primary carrier since upload transmission from handset to tower is much weaker over B41, yet this preserves B41 download advantage.

Was just able to download and install the Dec update for my S9.  AGAIN, no VOLTE, NO additional aggregation expansion.

AGAIN, after just a quick look, I see nothing that improved or changed.  Same old story for months.

If we can believe the rumors, the next update should make big improvements.

The One UI beta has all those features. So expect it once that update is finally pushed in its final form. Also, no way in hell it's gonna be a 179mb update.

Man, Android 10 really is a nothing-burger on the user end, short of the gestures. Very glad I didn't suffer through the betas for this.

I think the only reason you believe this, is because Samsung has been doing a bang-up job adding features that even Google themselves are implementing. Not to mention all the under the hood stuff.

So I've noticed that my Speed Test app always seems to show faster speeds than what I'm actually getting. Just now Speed Test showed I was getting 14Mbps down. OpenSignal and Root Metrics were showing 4Mbps and 5Mbps respectively. My Twitter, reddit and Safari apps are running like I'm on a 5Mbps connection. Just this past weekend in Chicago, Speed Test was saying I was getting 5Mbps. OpenSignal and RootMetrics were showing <1Mbps and 1Mbps respectively and my apps were running like they would on a 1Mbps connection. Has anyone else noticed this? I wouldn't be surprised if they were prioritizing speed test connections.

No, its because Speedtest has considerably more servers to ping (meaning less hops and closer in proximity) from than any of those other servers you mentioned. Typically, the fastest speed would be considered the most accurate.

Unfortunately most Sprint devices don’t have it enabled. I had to force it to work by using my MSL to turn on all CA bands. Sprint is extremely foolish to not have figured this out sooner because most of these test was indoors where normally b25 or b26 would have been alone. Most people in Denver is not experiencing this because the devices don’t have it enabled. That’s Sprints fault. Here in Ericsson land in Florida they don’t have it enabled at towers so it’s back to the trash indoor experience. emoji17.png T-Mobile will hopefully get this right if they take over.

Its unfortunate, I do not believe TMobile will be anywhere near as good as those advocating for the merger especially in the beginning, not to mention they will need to divulge all Sprint lowband.

Regardless, this is what Sprint needs to replicate in all markets, starting with markets that lack macro density since 5G has been awesome in cities and are less in need of this..

Unfortunately, with this merger looming who knows what parts of the network deployment take priority.

Bottom line, the "new" TMobile will be worse for a long time before it gets better.

Here's hoping Sprint continues to deploys this and the merger fails.😤
