  1. It seems as if Sprint/Softbank are trying to keep the company afloat long enough to try a merger/buyout of T-Mobile. Maybe T-Mobile will purchase Sprint.

Sprint's definitely going for the long term. I just don't think anyone wants to purchase the company with all of that debt, which is why they're lowering network spending to pay it off.

I could see Comcast or Google buying Sprint in the future. T-Mobile merger is unlikely I think.

  2. And yet Gilet/Sprint's announcement seems to be directly addressing this issue of getting LTE to these remaining sits and then some expansion.

The original idea was that they were going to use wireless microwave back haul instead. Sprint doesn't have the capex to upgrade GMO 3G only sites in these rural/suburban areas where their market share doesn't justify the cost. It's still probably going to be 2-3 years after the fact before those sites get LTE.
  3. Looks like Sprint's data speeds went down in this half of testing.

It does look like Sprint's call dropped/blocked improved though.  Wonder if that has anything to do with the change in the amount of customers on the network in the area.

EDIT: T-Mobile's call performance went down quite a bit.  Looks like they need B12 to offset these issues.

  4. Looks like they updated their spec sheet to reflect Cat 12 LTE.

Supports up to CAT 12 (600Mbps DL / 75Mbps UL) depending on carrier support

Basically meaning 4x4 MIMO and 256-QAM are supported to achieve the advertised 600Mbps speeds.

Excellent.  This makes it a little more worthwhile.  I'll probably wait for a sale though.  From the initial reviews, it looks like battery performance is pretty good.

  5. This philanthropic effort has no effect on Sprint's network CAPEX and upgrade progress.  Apples and oranges.  Nachos and karate.

Additionally, the giveaway is not a Mobile Beacon type situation -- "unlimited" data under outdated contract terms.  No, it is limited data of 3 GB per month.  That restricts users from putting much of a dent in the Sprint network.  And any goodwill gained can be counted as an asset.

Well, okay.  Let's go over this.  1 million customers free users with 3GB data each is not an issue, but grandfathered customers that have been with Sprint for 5+ years paying for it is an issue?  As far as Capex goes, Sprint has the lowest out of the big 4 and is now giving away devices/service for what?  Tax breaks? Goodwill?  I'd rather them increase ARPU, focus on network upgrades and improve what customers are paying for.  Sprint's not a Charity, is it?

I might just want to add a quote as well.

I guess he's too busy giving out free stuff to the poor, and not giving out $5 ice cream cones to his customers.

    What a shame! sac.

  6. Effectively, I suppose. Except once the transaction is complete they won't own the spectrum anymore. They're doing a sale/leaseback. So they're selling some of the spectrum they have rights to for cash up front and then leasing the spectrum back from the buyer. Then they'll pay monthly lease payments for the term of the lease. The lease payments will have a certain amount of interest built into them.

It's actually a smart move. What exactly binds the new owner from just leasing it to somebody else? Contract?

This sounds similar to what T-Mobile did when they sold their cell towers off a year or two ago and started leasing them.

  7. The Reddit thread makes me so sad reading through it.

I figured I'd chime in here. Sprint does not have enough B41 live nationwide and they also have the least amount of cell towers/coverage. I feel like in their financial predicament, they should really focus on the upgrades instead of giving away service to users that aren't going to pay for it. I'm surprised AJ hasn't chimed in on this yet, considering his stance on people that have device subsidies.
