  1. The issue with guaranteed throughput is that the carriers would have to manage their networks more tightly than they do now from a capacity perspective. And theres the issue of edge-of-cell connections. Would you rather have your device prematurely disconnect from LTE because you paid for a higher plan (which at -110dBm the tower can't feed you the speeds for) or would you rather have whatever speed the network can provide? It's a lot easier to just have a set-cost unlimited data option for the phone (to encourage users to get a Sprint phone over someone else's) and then charge a little for tethering (Sprint's $20 for 2GB is actually pretty reasonable). As capacity improves, decrease the cost per tethered GB (so maybe when LTE-A comes out you'll get 3-5GB for $20).
  2. Just added the $20 Mobile Hotspot (2GB) plan to my account, since I'd like to test out LTE on something other than my phone (without rooting it) when I'm in Fort Worth Wed-Sun, and the San Antonio area Sun-Tue. It'll be hard to hold myself to just 2GB, but that should be enough data to thoroughly test how fast Sprint LTE is once it's live in those regions. I'll probably cancel the addon once I get back to Colorado though, since I do have other ways of getting connectivity on the go (T-Mobile HSPA+ data stick and Verizon LTE iPad). But the tethering plan should be fun while it lasts (and a heck of a better deal versus Verizon's 1GB, $20 plan). EDIT: According to the Sites Complete map, I'll be ~1.22 miles from one completed site, and ~2.07 from another, when I've arrived at my destination in Fort Worth.
  3. Sounds about right. As long as the connection is snappy and can stream HD Netflix (around 5 Mbps), that will be enough for 99% of people. For the tethering set, more is always better, but at what price?
  4. Sad day...the Google search bar has been hamstrung due to Apple shenanigans. This is one reason why I will not recommend the iPhone to people. Particularly since Palm definitely has prior art on this patent.
  5. Just got a notiication of this update. Installed in a minute or so. Looks like a new baseband? In any case, it was a 1.9MB file.Android version is 4.0.4. Looks like the build date is 7/4 on the kernel.
  6. Hmm...if FreedomPop can get LTE, it sure would be nice if Virgin Mobile could as well. Ting's cool and all, but its phones are quite expensive, what with no subsidy and all that.
  7. Boost, yo. And T-Mobstaz. And CricKet
  8. Ah, airport codes. People look at me weird when I tell them I'll be in DFW next Wednesday. What?!? That airport's IATA code atually maps to the airport name and the general area name. Versus, say, MCO. Or IAH for that matter.
  9. Also, Sprint used to stand for Southern Pacific Railroad INTernal...
  10. Now that I've stopped constantly playing with my phone, I now have all-day battery life. My guess is that the first few discharges/recharges helped condition the battery for this as well. Maybe the update helped too...
  11. One note on Cheyenne: Sprint's backbone has a PoP there. So it's pretty easy for them to put a 4g core there with plenty of Internet bandwidth. I wouldn't expect any more Sprint service to come to WY, but the core is.nicely redundant, since it's only a few milliseconds away from Denver.
  12. They did. I think it was video 2. They only mention the cores in AlcaLu's service area though.
  13. It's not like they're the only online music store that has 100% of those songs available or anything.

  14. Another thing to think about with Verizon is that he'll have to switch to a data-limited connection (or even a Share Everything plan...ugh) when he upgrades to the Windows Phone. If he goes all the way to Share Everything, that's $100 per month for a decent amount of data (2GB), though of course calling needs will be met. More likely though is that he can just grab the $30, 2GB per month data pack and keep his normal plan (though that might actually be more expensive than Share Everything, depending on how many minutes he chews through). ...then there's Sprint, which will have Win8 phones soonish (I guess) and unlimited data, on a plan that's $80 per month since mobile calling sounds like most of the minute usage. You can even shave another $10 per month off (and get another 50 anytime minutes) by going to sprint.com/everythingplus and using Russ.S.McGuire@sprint.com / 383 for the credentials (yes, that hack still works, and is pretty much sanctioned by Sprint at this point). As others have said though, check coverage beforehand. It might not be worth it to switch if you go from LTE 90% of the time to a hodgepodge of LTE, 3G and roaming 1x.
  15. tl;dr: a bilateral roaming agreement between Sprint and C Spire for LTE in PCS would be advantageous to both parties. That's probably all that will ever happen...which is fine.
  16. Technically possible? Yes. AWS (Band IV) is all one band, so if a device supports a tech in that band then roaming would be doable. PCS/Sprint is a little touchier due to the G block, though it's not as bad as 700MHz where you've got lower 700 sans A (AT&T), lower 700 (non-AT&T) and upper-C 700.

    GPS on S3

According to the Help system, the foreground/background of the satellite number are inverted in signal view, and GLONASS sats are displayed as triangles 9vs. circles) in constellation view.

    GPS on S3

I have the paid version of that app. Just checked and the phone definitely sees GLONASS birds (several show up in constellation view), though the phone stayed put on GPS exclusively except for a second or so when it picked up a GLONASS sat to augment its position reading.
  19. Mine still works. Then again, I'm not rooted.

    GS3 and 4G LTE

    Makes sense. Er...TouchWiz.

    GPS on S3

Could be. Google has an app called My Tracks that's nearly as old as the Android platform, with a video tutorial that mentions having enough time to do a round of calisthenics while waiting for your G1 (or something close to it) to get GPS lock. Kinda sad, considering my Mogul could get a lock faster than that...once it got its GPS enabled...and it ran Windows Mobile!

    GS3 and 4G LTE

I line If I had yearly upgrades instead of the standard two years, I probably would have ended up with an E4GT. Or maybe a Photon...who knows. Seems like I like to stick with phones in the same series though...my HTC Touch Pro (6850 I think) replaced the Mogul (6700) and now my GSIII has replaced a Galaxy S variant. Yeah, Samsung had me at AMOLED.
  23. Hmm, since GWallet still works when the phone is rooted (despite the fact that it's "not supported"), it makes me that much more likely to pop a new ROM onto my device. Though that probably won't happen until after I get back from LTE-land (DFW, followed by the San Antonio market).
