  1. Ahh I see. It looks like linking to a zip code URL still works, but no fullscreen options anywhere. I never even realized there were fullscreen maps available. I know they received a big capital investment earlier this year, I'm sure that had something to do with all of the major changes to the site and the app. -Mike
  2. Agreed.. the camera and OS tweaks are very nice. It's not as scary as it might intially seem.. if you're on S4GRU, you are nerdy enough to be able to handle this. Do the update however you like, either with the OTA, fastboot, or flashing through recovery (TWRP). After that's all done, just flash this ZIP file through recovery to restore the old modem. Don't be lazy like AJ -Mike
  3. If you are not already unlocked, do that first -- then do the 4.4.1 update, then flash the 16M radio. There is no disadvantage to unlocking that I am aware of. -Mike
  4. If you're already unlocked, this update will not re-lock your phone. For specifics about loading the update manually, there are several lengthy threads on XDA; this one has it spelled out nicely in the first post with links to further explanations if needed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2523217 -Mike
  5. There is no public issue tracker for the devices themselves as there is for Android; this link should get you to the proper page where you can call or e-mail Google. I just sent a message and invited them to check this thread out. I have reached out to them before and usually get a reply within the hour. I also posted a reply on Sprint's community blog post about the update, but I expect better results with Google. -Mike
  6. Probably because the guy who wrote it doesn't know what he is doing! Honestly, I have not heard of that happening. Email screenshots to support@bluelinepc.com.. let's not hijack this thread. -Mike
  7. This is a Nexus radio firmware bug, not an Android bug, so the usual issue tracker isn't appropriate. I'm sure there is something out there for the Nexus, I will hunt around. -Mike
  8. I have been out and about for several hours, and mine seems better.. but I have no way of knowing if it has anything to do with the radio, something in the 4.4.1 update itself, or my brain just making things up.. Not that anyone was asking for further confirmation, but LTE signal strength is definitely worse. A 50-mile round trip of mostly highway driving saw blips of LTE here and there, but less than my EVO LTE typically picked up. Two days ago, I made the same trip and the N5 was on solid LTE 100% of the time. I saw on XDA that AT&T users saw improved connection stability with this radio.. good for them, I'm rolling it back when I get home! -Mike
  9. You can definitely flash a radio img (or recovery, or bootloader, or system partition) through fastboot; I had to flash system.img in order to update to 4.4.1 because I had modified system files. My only concern would be if the old radio is compatible with the new software. Sometimes mixing versions does not go well.. but hopefully if a radio rollback turns out to be the best idea, it's backwards compatible. -Mike
  10. I hear what you are saying, but if that's what they were trying to fix, they did it wrong. Instead of altering the actual signal levels (either artificially by doing some math on the reported dB, or changing something in the radio itself to reduce reception levels), they should have changed the threshold. I had a solid connection and great speeds at roughly -110 dB until the update; now that same signal is showing -120, and I am dropping back to eHRPD. I was also wondering if the reduced signal levels had something to do with power saving; some folks weren't happy with the battery life, perhaps the radio was using too much juice to get those great signal levels? I don't know all of the technical intricacies about how radios work, but that's what my brain came up with. -Mike
  11. It worked for me on 4.4 and confirmed it's fine on 4.4.1.. after about 20 seconds, I get "The update is complete." -Mike
  12. Some quick observations of Android 4.4.1 on my Nexus 5.. first, the good: Haptic feedback is much crisper.. LOVE it. I thought it was "mushy" before; that feeling is gone. The camera improvements are as good as the reports are. MUCH faster response and focus time. Speaker volume is much louder, hadn't realized how much quieter it was compared to my other phones until I realized how high I had the volume. The battery % in the notification pulldown is not rounded anymore. I don't remember specifics, but I feel like it was always rounded to the nearest 5 or 10%. The e-mail bug I reported earlier (name does not appear on outgoing messages) is fixed. The not so good: LTE signal readings appear to be about 8-10 dB weaker. At home I was well aware of what my levels were in different areas of the house, and how they compared to other LTE devices. Still slightly better than my EVO LTE, but nowhere near as much now. I now lose LTE at my desk. Since I took delivery of my N5 two weeks ago, I hadn't lost LTE anywhere in my house, ever. A Galaxy Victory within a few feet of it still shows the same LTE signal levels as before and does not lose LTE, so nothing changed with my nearby tower overnight. I don't use LTE much at home, but when I head out later, I should be able to tell if performance is affected. Since activating this phone, I have not lost LTE anywhere I have been in Eastern MA while in the car or outside. Camera shots are still saved in 4:3 format instead of matching the full width of what you see when you take the picture. Seems very strange to me.. one would expect the software to either format the view as 4:3, or save the pictures full-width. I wonder if the previous radio firmware can be loaded onto 4.4.1? I want to do some more testing with this version before I try that myself. -Mike
  13. I guess your N5 is more motivated than mine.. I hadn't used compression before, but after I saw your post I tried it.. I hadn't done a TWRP backup with the N5 yet but it was sooooo much slower than my EVO LTE was. Took 20-25 minutes and 11% battery to back up system and data. Then flashing the update failed because I had deleted the Korean keyboard off my phone.. doh! -Mike
  14. I'm not a huge fan of the gray map background color, but otherwise the website seems pretty similar to what it always has been...? -Mike
  15. AFAIK, that's only for Outlook.com users, not private Exchange servers. I wouldn't want to be forced to use a separate app for one account either. I appreciate having all of my accounts consolidated into one view. The color indicators on K-9 Mail are awesome, very easy to tell which messages are from which accounts. After a half day of usage, I'm more impressed than I expected. I just checked again, and suddenly all of the messages in the Inbox on that Exchange account are appearing. Not sure what changed along the way (4 hours ago they were not in there, and I set the account up 12+ hours ago), but I guess I just wasn't patient enough. -Mike
  16. If it happens again, try a profile update, it is quicker and less of a hassle for you. That usually fixes issues that appear to be on the network side. -Mike
  17. I did.. loving K-9 Mail so far! Took awhile to get it to play nice with one of my Exchange Server accounts, but finally got that straightened out. One strange thing I have noticed, on the Exchange account specifically, is that it does not load all of the messages in the inbox, despite my setting to download all. No matter what I try, messages from more than 2.5 months ago will not show up (there are less than 25 messages total in the account, so it's not a capacity issue). I know Exchange<->Android is historically buggy, but if anyone has any suggestions, my ears are open. It is working flawlessly otherwise. -Mike
  18. The web link is not working for me at the moment either.. -Mike
  19. Haha I do the same thing! When the screen is off, it is difficult to figure out which end is up on the black N5. I definitely prefer the power button along the top. -Mike
  20. Yes, for now I do.. the stock HTC app on my EVO LTE worked well for me, I didn't realize the stock Android one was so different. I don't need anything crazy, but it's lacking some features I need. I plan on trying third-party apps like K9. -Mike
  21. Android bug report filed.. 'star' it so Google takes a look: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=63280 -Mike
  22. Oh I figured that was what you were getting at, but providers are referred to as carriers all the time, including on industry ads if my memory serves me correctly. Of course, repetition doesn't make it right... -Mike
  23. Is it bad practice to use them interchangeably when referring to the company that runs the wireless network you are connected to? -Mike
  24. The provider info will be displayed on the main screen if it is known for sure.. that is only possible on HTC devices right now. The pulldown notification takes a guess at it, but I don't think it is as reliable as I would like at the moment. It's something I am working on. I've been out of town for the past 5 days and have a lot going on this week, but I hope to find enough time to fix a few more bugs and get an update out. -Mike
