  1. You may know this already, but others may not. Magic Box can use B25 for back haul.

Up until recently they were denying apps because there was no band 41 around.  Parking these on band 25 is not really ideal but maybe now they are looking at overall utilization for band 25 before they disqualify someone completely.

  2. For those who have been contacted about the Magic Box, were you contacted by email, text or phone?  I received a call (after looking up the number since I do not answer calls from numbers I do not know), the feedback says it was from a Sprint Store I have never visited though I have visited others on rare occasion.

I received a call.  888 sprint number.  they left a voicemail since coverage was a problem and my phone did not ring.  I think the declines are being sent emails instead so they dont have to deal with the whining over the phone. ;)

  3. I’m not exactly sure we can, considering the credits were supposed to be applied monthly as deductions, similar to how your base Framily rate gets deducted 5 dollars for every extra person you have on your Framily plan. Technically it’s not our money because it was something Sprint offered as a promotion, and not as cash.

never know until you try.  i would start with chat support asking for a credit of the negative balance to zero out your account and then move up from there and eventually use marcis support email address to get it done.

  4. Around 1200 dollars worth of the credits is credit from Sprint that is supposed to be for the devices. We took advantage of the trade in an iPhone 6 or newer towards an iPhone 7 promo back in September and Sprint couldn’t figure out how to apply our monthly bill credits for the device payments so they just credited us the whole amount of the devices.

I understand that we can just make our usual monthly payment, minus the equipment fees, and we wouldn’t have a problem, but it just seems weird that we still have to physically pay when there’s such a large available balance.

That sounds very bass-ackwards.  Why not just request a credit balance refund for the amount on your account?

  5. applied the first morning the box got announced. just now got the magic phone call about the magic box.  i have no band 41 around for miles but was approved for one, thankfully.  band 41 may not be the only requirement they are looking at.  two separate accounts will benefit from the magic box at my address.  not sure about direct neighbors but i am also right in the middle of downtown so there will be that benefit as well.  for those with no band 41, hang in there there is still other factors they are looking at.

  6. Because credits does not equal real money. Equipment charges need to be paid with real money since Apple or Samsung need to be paid with real money and not Sprint credits.

maybe i dont understand the situation but wouldnt they just subtract any and all bills from the credit balance and keep doing so until there is no longer a credit balance left on the account?

  7. Its been so long that I had to think about this up here, but are sites that are recently band 25 enabled (GMOs) broadcasting at full power from the get go or do they still need to go back and optimize power levels so they leave them running at 80% or less of full power level?

Fwiw, the one GMO site most important to me went to broadcasting band 25 this past friday...my life is complete.  Drove up to the site to see if I could catch them working but there was no one around.  Interesting that in todays site update there was only a few new complete sites in maine as I know there is much much more with LTE complete these days.

  8. Nice! Any B41 yet?

Re: porting... not until they have service where I work. They also won't accept my Verizon iP7+. It says not eligible for the current promotion.

not seen any band 41.  seems the big push is just the GMO sites which will be band 25 only (for now i guess).  Was at my sisters house out in the boonies last week which has always had decent sprint service and 3G.  Had another party there today and what do i see on my phone when i get out of my car?  Band 25.  They are moving on these GMO sites big time.  I am speechless really. Guess they decided they want to do it during the summer months when the weather is decent up here.  Cant wait to see the next sprint coverage map update reflecting all of this added coverage.

  9. LTE DU + software configuration at BTS + better backhaul of some sort if they don't want to use T1s or the like.

I think all of the GMOs up here had the backhaul run to them at the start of network vision.  Isnt that what the 3G upgrade pin meant?  Plus, the ones I tried all had sub 100ms ping times, most under 60 ms on EVDO.  If memory serves correctly, sub 100 ms pings meant enhanced backhaul was in place for LTE even if it wasnt broadcasting yet.  Correct?

  10. The replacement (or just upgrade?) of GMO sites is well underway in Maine these days after several years of all but neglecting us up here.  I guess I need to eat crow after being so skeptical of that announcement late last year of the huge push to upgrade all remaining sites.  The pace they are moving is surprising.  The number of new sites in each of the last two weekly updates shows that.  I had to go for a ride today and I found 3 more sites that have not yet even made the updates here but are now broadcasting band 25.

My question now is...what is being upgraded at these sites?  If memory serves, it is just base station equipment?  They do not have to go up the tower at all as the antennas can already broadcast band 25?  Finally, how fast can a site be knocked out?  1 per day?

  11. USCC counts against your roaming. The good news they are sometimes slow to report to sprint your usage. So you may be able to go over the roaming limit. At least I was able to for a weekend then two days latter I get an email about hitting my limit and roaming was blocked.

At least with USCC LTE roaming, its a matter of an hour or two for reporting from what I have seen these days.  Also, speeds seem to be capped at about 2 megabits in both directions for LTE roaming...anyone else confirm?

  12. Also requested one at 11 am the day of the earnings call and have yet to get a call or voicemail about it.  not holding my breath though, unfortunately.  One day I will be able to walk around the house without swapping between 3G and LTE, with or without sprint if need be.

  13. The key word is fallback. The whole purpose of the device much like Mobilitie's small cell deployments using relay is to utilize a dedicated 2.5 channel for backhaul.  So I can't say I'm surprised they're rejecting places that only have band 25 or in rf places where they don't think there will be a potential band 41 macro donor. In either of those scenarios an AIRAVE is the more appropriate solution.

The device did not debut with such restrictions though.  http://newsroom.sprint.com/magic-box/  Even Gunthers video does not touch on that, just that it is a device meant to help indoor coverage.  If I had to guess, demand far outpaced supply so they decided to go this route, hopefully just initially.

  14. A user posted on reddit the call he got about his Magic box preorder.  They wont send him one because there is no band 41 in his area which is what the magic box apparently needs...yet, we know band 25 can be used as fall back.  Have my hopes been dashed or do I have to get thrown into the sprint rep lottery and hope whoever gets my order knows the actual capabilities of the box?  I know the first version of this box had lock up issues on band 25...wonder if they are seeing more problems with this?

  15. Yeah, I'm not sure what part of the state you are in, but I wish they would tweak their USCC and AT&T LTE roaming parameters.

I'm sure we'd rather be connected to AT&T/USCC LTE than weak Sprint 3G or 1x.

I am down in york county.  I get LTE at home as long as I am by the window, once i move its game over.  I dont mind being on 3G if im home, the problem is the constant switching between LTE and 3G which annoys me to no end.  I hope i win the magic box lottery and am able to score one.

I dont see a plus side to them putting us on another carrier in areas we do not get sprint LTE...we might as well just get on that carrier to begin with.

  16. Yeah, I've lived here my entire life and could never recommend Sprint to someone in the Northeast, especially those who travel to ME and NH.

Even in the populated parts of Maine, Sprint LTE is stretched thinly. 3G and 1x are more common than LTE.

This is a major highway (95) and it's not covered by Sprint LTE. The other 3 have had service there for a long time...

Maines problem is the amount of GMO sites.  Sprint upgraded i believe all the full build sites in the area (minus band 41 of course) and left the GMO sites alone besides backhaul upgrades.  At that point they fully abandoned us.
