What happens to all of that old base station equipment?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know what actually happens to the old equipment that gets removed from the cell sites as Network Vision upgrades are brought online?

I would assume that it either gets sold to recyclers, or to smaller carriers in the US and other countries. Perhaps SouthernLINC would buy some of the iDEN gear (I'm not sure if they are actively expanding their iDEN network)?

I've always been curious about this, so if anyone has any information I'd love to hear it!

Every T1 line should be stripped and the copper melted down into bricks and sold. Gut the gigantic cabinets and send them to some third world country for use as housing, as I never want to see any of that garbage again!

Assumedly it would be a mixture of iDEN, CDMA and maybe WiMax so I would think it would have value as an asset that has been depreciated and was worth next to nothing on Sprint's Balance Sheet. So now it could be sold or traded to some of our roaming partners in exchange for $$$ to help pay for NV or better roaming agreements. Or they could give me some and I'll build a tower in the trees in my backyard.

Not much money in the copper used in T1s. Kinda like a phone wire just more than 2 wires.
