LTE Spectrum per Market

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if there is a thread about this but if there is I've looked and its buried somewhere.  So originally I wanted to post a list of markets and the spectrum channels that are being used in each market for each band (i.e. 1900 (b25) 800 (b26) 2500 (b41)) but I can't find the information.  Its easy to find how much spectrum sprint has in each band but not whats being used.  For example on the 1900 frequency in Utah they are using 5x5 mhz.  And I think everywhere b41 is they have like 20-25mhz available.   I know with the shutdown of the iden network they were going to try and free up some spectrum and try and deploy 10x10 mhz channel throughout the U.S for LTE on b25 by end of 2013.  So my question is do we know or is there a way to find out what is being used in various markets?  Will they increase spectrum somehow with a broader use of voice on the 800 frequency? If so when?  is 800 LTE b26 only 5x5 mhz all over the country or do different markets have more spectrum?

The biggest Band 26 carrier size we will see is 5x5 MHz. In some markets, due to spectrum constraints, the carrier size won't even be that big, rather it would be a 3x3 MHz wide carrier so that there can still be one 1xAdvanced carrier along with the Band 26 LTE carrier.

On to Band 25, Sprint is only deploying 5x5 carriers of Band 25 using their PCS G Block holdings, which is only big enough for a 5x5 carrier. However, Sprint does have enough spectrum in several markets to add another 5x5 MHz carrier on Band 25, which would definitely help in the markets that are currently being overloaded.

And with Band 41, right now Sprint is only deploying 20 MHz chunks of spectrum (this is referred to 20 MHz not 20x20 MHz because it is TDD-LTE not FDD-LTE). Sprint will later deploy more 20 MHz carriers in markets as needed, and they will also begin to use Carrier Aggregation to bind multiple carriers together for some insane throughput figures.

The great thing about Sprint deploying 1xAdvanced in their SMR holdings is the fact that 1xAdvanced is (I believe) 4 times more spectrally efficient than 1xRTT. Along with that spectrum efficiency, 800 MHz propagation is so superior to PCS that it's not even funny.

You can always donate more to the site to become a premier sponsor so that you can gain access to HUGE swaths of information on things like Band 41 and Band 26 deployment. And that's just the tip of the iceberg  ;)

Thanks thats awesome information.  As for Band 25...I know that they do have enough spectrum in several markets to add another 5x5 mhz channel but I was wondering if they were actually doing that and if we knew what markets this was being done in.  Or is that a premier sponsor thing too?  And yeah I'd absolutely love to donate more and do the premier sponsor thing but I'm about to enter grad school and between fees to apply, interview and "save your seat" costs plus what money I'm trying to gather for tuition I'm living off loans right now and can't.  Trust me if I had the money I'd be the first one to donate and become a premier sponsor because I know its more than worth it!

We have not seen/heard credible rumors or seen evidence of a second B25 LTE carrier yet anywhere in the country.  There is nothing about it in the Premier Sponsor section either.  Not yet, anyway.   ;)

The info you seek is the kind of info that Mosaik Solutions tracks. If you have a few thousand dollars...

The Shentel Q4 call indicated that they had deployed a second B25 carrier on their 12 busiest sites.  No evidence yet, but that is what was stated in the call.  There is a thread around here with the info, prolly in General Topics.

Yes, I posted something myself since I posted this about Shentel deploying a second carrier.  I am the one who said it.  :)

    • Someone told me a couple years ago, that there were problems getting certain modems to aggregate overlapping spectrum even if the overlapping parts were actually blanked. So I think there might be firmware issues that need to be resolved first, which T-Mobile might not consider worth the effort for 4MHz at this time.
    • Tbh not that surprising. Every ISP seems to want to have an MVNO to pitch to their customers to make them stickier and maybe make some money in the process. And unlike USCC the MVNO should be able to cover TDS's entire wireline area, with infrastructure costs that are borne by someone else. Entertaining, yes. Surprising, not really...particularly when competing against Comcast or Spectrum, or even eventually T-Mobile fixed + mobile. This also strengthens my bet that they'll rebrand all their fixed wireless stuff as TDS, as that runs on spectrum they're keeping for now.
    • No? RCS on Google messages works great for me, messages between anyone with RCS enabled go through with no problems. Don't remember the last time I had an issue. I only have issues with people on iPhones on different carriers from T-Mobile.
    • Has anyone experienced a ridiculous amount of difficulty with Google messages with RCS enabled?  It has been a train wreck for me for the past year so I now use WhatsApp.  That works very well for all of us.... Android and iOS.
    • Probably not worth the fiddling given that that's a few percent of the band. Also, if they really wanted to push my assumption is there are still guard bands in play for the n41 carriers so they could fit two "100 MHz" carriers into 194 MHz anyway. Looks like minimum guard band is less than 1 MHz and a 100 MHz channel is only 273 30 KHz resource blocks, which is a bit over 80 MHz total, so if they really wanted to pull another 5% or so capacity out they could.
