Network Vision/LTE - Rochester Market (Rochester, New York)

I work in Henrietta, near Winton & Brighton Henrietta Townline Road.  The last week or so, the data connection has been extremely unstable.  Hotspotting is almost useless because the cellular data connection just stops responding at random intervals.  I hope they finish the upgrades soon because this data connection instability is driving me nuts!

I've had no service all day at Xerox in Webster, I was hoping some towers were getting upgraded, but I doubt that's it. (by the way, I can't believe I have no way of reporting an outage on the Sprint web site!)

It could very well be a result of work going on, why do you doubt that's the case? Work has been happening all over the market lately.

Mostly because it was down all day long with absolutely no service (not spotty service, no service at all.)

*Sigh*. Day two with no service at Xerox in Webster. Is there any way to see the list of towers currently undergoing upgrades? Would it really be down for two days?

I'm not sure if it is upgrades after all if it's been totally without service like that. I guess it could be but there isn't a way to tell really. Do you not at least get roaming coverage that you can use there?

No, surprisingly it didn't cut over to roaming.   Finally came back up after about noon today.   I was hoping to see a 4G at the top of my phone, but alas no.   I have started seeing 4G in a few spots around town, namely Henrietta and in Hyland Park.

It is probable then that they were installing new equipment at the tower serving that area then, but perhaps they are waiting on backhaul to turn 4G on like so many other areas, did you perhaps notice an improvement in 3G speeds there when they turned it back on?

There were NCS (I think) Wireless trucks in my work parking lot on Hudson Ave today.  We have sprint antennas on top of the building.  I asked the plant manager about it and he said "It was Sprint but they already did an upgrade. This crew is removing the old equipment.".

Sill 3G today, and not very fast.

I've noticed the acceptance reports haven't quite matched up with what I am experiencing through customer interaction and field testing.

There are sites that have indeed had new equipment installed but are not on the map.

And just to get everyone's hopes up here's what I got today...

"It looks like all new remaining towers will start coming on tonight and be done by the 26th. 7 LTE towers... don't have the specifics.."

Not that its relevant anymore but the Xerox issue was equipment related and not due to Network Vision / Spark.

I don't remember who originally brought it up here but I'm interested to know if you know about our store location on Ridge?

Does this mean they will actually be turning on the LTE?  I ask because there are "3G/4G" (Yellow) towers on the map that are not broadcasting LTE.

Im assuming they meant that all of the Rochester market would be 3G accepted and 7 more sites would show 4G accepted. Now whether or not we would see 4G from those sites or even any enhnaced 3G or voice capability remains to be seen.

My personal experience has been that regardless of acceptance I see no difference in 3G data speeds or voice quality. I have experienced 4G LTE in henrietta but speeds were sub 2mbs. I love to see accepted sites but remember that doesn't equate to any real change yet.

The info I received was Sprint internal, not Care. I still take it all with a grain of salt but my IAE knows not to talk to me unless she is confident about what she has to offer.

I know I have personally seen work being done on various towers like the one I mentioned previously where 590 meets 104, and they haven't been shown to be accepted yet. It is possible that Robert is behind with updating the maps for the Rochester market when it comes to accepted sites, as he is a very busy guy managing all of this site out of what is essentially spare time, we don't pay for his service and he does everything here because he wants to, basically. It is also very possible that work is pretty much just running all over the market and that the sites mentioned by Matt are very "close" to being officially accepted, at which time Robert will get the information on them and then mark them as accepted sites in the maps.

All in all, like I also have said before, I think that Network Vision as a whole has definitely got some momentum going in the Rochester market. It looks to me on the maps like the vast majority of the market, outside of the actual city, is 3G accepted. They are probably working very vigorously to get the sites in the city upgraded properly with LTE for the much needed data capacity, but it is an extremely complex process and they have to go through quite a bit to upgrade all of the relatively aged equipment currently in place. It is very likely that the aforementioned seven sites will be accepted and turned on in the near future, and they will definitely pop up on the maps soon after that happens, it's just patience and sticking it out with Sprint until they get the chance to set up the new equipment.

The things Matt has heard from Sprint from the inside as well as all of the 3G acceptances we have seen all over Rochester, and the few sites that are actually broadcasting LTE are very good things, and we should be moving nowhere but forward from here. It's just more or less waiting on the vendors to sort out the extremely complicated process of upgrading the antiquated equipment with the shiny new stuff, and it's anybody's guess how difficult that's going to be for them to do and therefore how long it will take.

Let's just hope the crappy Rochester weather will not impact their work, we've already had snow which is just bad ju-ju!  :(

Maybe I'll go and find some of the workers climbing up towers in the freezing cold and wind and offer to buy them some beers if they promise to stick it out and get it done fast!

This has been my speeds for the past 45 days or so can someone tell me there intake on this im near e.ridge rd

sent from my GS3

To me, those look like garbage speeds from old equipment that hasn't been properly updated yet. If the tower you're bouncing off has been updated, than its still overcrowded and in need of more capacity in the form of LTE. Hang in there mate, the good stuff will be coming soon!

    • In the conference call they had two question on additional spectrum. One was the 800 spectrum. They are not certain what will happen, thus have not really put it into their plans either way (sale or no sale). The do have a reserve level. It is seen as great for new technologies which I presume is IOT or 5g slices.  They did not bite on use of their c-band or DOD.  mmWave rapidly approaching deadlines not mentioned at all. FWA brushes on this as it deals with underutilized spectrum on a sector by sector basis.  They are willing to take more money to allow FWA to be mobile (think RV or camping). Unsure if this represents a higher priority, for example, RVs in Walmart parking lots where mobile needs all the capacity. In terms of FWA capacity, their offload strategy is fiber through joint ventures where T-Mobile does the marketing, sales, and customer support while the fiber company does the network planning and installation.  50%-50% financial split not being consolidated into their books. I think discussion of other spectrum would have diluted the fiber joint venture discussion. They do have a fund which one use is to purchase new spectrum. Sale of the 800Mhz would go into this. It should be noted that they continue to buy 2.5Ghz spectrum from schools etc to replace leases. They will have a conference this fall  to update their overall strategies. Other notes from the call are 75% of the phones on the network are 5g. About 85% of their sites have n41, n25, and n71. 93% of traffic is on midband.  SA is also adding to their performance advantage, which they figure is still ahead of other carriers by two years. It took two weeks to put the auction 108 spectrum to use at their existing sites. Mention was also made that their site spacing was designed for midrange thus no gaps in n41 coverage, while competitors was designed for lowband thus toggles back and forth for n77.
    • The manual network selection sounds like it isn't always scanning NR, hence Dish not showing up. Your easiest way to force Dish is going to be forcing the phone into NR-only mode (*#*#4636#*#* menu?), since rainbow sims don't support SA on T-Mobile.
    • "The company’s unique multi-layer approach to 5G, with dedicated standalone 5G deployed nationwide across 600MHz, 1.9GHz, and 2.5GHz delivers customers a consistently strong experience, with 85% of 5G traffic on sites with all three spectrum bands deployed." Meanwhile they are very close to a construction deadline in June for 850Mhz of mmWave in most of Ohio iirc. No reported sightings.

They're completely avoiding talking about mmWave.
    • Was true in my market. Likely means a higher percentage of 5g phones in your market.
