Poor Call Quality on Verizon Galaxy S III

I get poor call quality on the Verizon Galaxy S III in places where Sprint worked great on the Nexus S 4G and the iPhone.

 

I get poor call quality (dropouts and garbledness) where it's about -100 dBm or less, especially jumping around -105 to -111. I'm just curious why, and I feel like Sprint has just better call quality in general. My GS3 in unusable for phone calls in my house on Verizon, but the iPhone on Sprint was fine. The house is stucco over wire mesh so I don't expect wireless to work well in the house.

Where are you located in Minnesota? All other factors equal, if VZW is primarily Cellular 850 MHz in your market, Sprint could have an advantage with PCS 1900 MHz, which can more readily leak through small openings in your home's construction.

I tried out two GS3's, and couldn't get a good signal in "my area" with either of them. It's a great phone and wanted to keep it, but found that the radio wasn't the best, at least in my area. When driving to mankato, it was virtually zero bars when passing by janesville, and dropping calls. I have the EVO LTE now, and I have full bars when driving by jansville on hwy 14. For whatever reason the GS3 didn't like the tower in that town.

To be honest I absolutely hate talking to people with VZW. They used the shi**est codec just sounds all muffled cant make out what they say. Have to ask people to repeat themselves. Its almost to the point of unbearable. I have no problems with any other carrier just Vzw. Just my experience!

In my opinion, Sprint does have the best voice quality. Too bad I dislike talking to people on the phone.

 

That being said, the GS3 has an excellent 1x/EVDO radio and it tests right on par with the best smartphones on the Sprint network. The same as the Motorola Photon. I have not tested LTE radio performance yet (but will on Labor Day weekend). But I can tell you if you are having problems with reception on a Sprint GS3, you either have defective device, or you are not in a Sprint coverage area.

It is the third such deployment of MatSing equipment at Super Bowl venues in as many years, following cellular upgrades at Allegiant Stadium for Super Bowl LVIII and at State Farm Stadium for Super Bowl LVII. According to the Saints, the MatSing antennas were part of a large wireless overhaul this offseason, done primarily “to satisfy fans’ desires for wireless consumption and bandwidth,” an important thing with Super Bowl LIX coming to the venue on Feb. 9, 2025. Another 16 large antenna spheres of varying sizes and frequencies have also been installed for a total of 32 new large antennas, in addition to 200 cellular antennas inside and around the building, all of these products specifically made for high-density environments such as stadiums and arenas. The DAS system's performance is expected to enhance further as it becomes fully integrated throughout the season. The MatSing MS-48H180 devices, with a black color that matches the Caesars Superdome's roof, each were individually raised by hoist machines to the top of the facility and bolted into place. Each cellular antenna then transmits 48 different beams and signals to a specific area in the stadium, with each sphere angled differently to specifically target different coverage areas, allowing increased, consistent coverage for high-density seating areas. In addition to creating targets in seating and common areas throughout the stadium, these antennas create dedicated floor zones that result in improved coverage to the field areas for fans in 12 field-level suites and the Mercedes-Benz End Zone Club, teams and on-field media and broadcast elements. The project is also adding 2,500 new wireless access points placed in areas such as concourses, atriums, suites and food and beverage areas for better WiFi coverage.
