  1. Again, I know they have said it is a regression from the M8. What I'm saying is that the display is still great and near the top in the smartphone realm despite the fact that it went backwards and is far from being a bad display. The display itself is getting a "bad rating" because the display is a step backwards from the M8, not because the display itself is bad.

It's akin to many people thinking the M9's design is bland because it's so similar to the M8, but that does not change the fact that it is still one the best designed phones around. They just speak about it negatively because they didn't change it as much as people hoped.

I'm sure the M9 is still a fantastic device and everything comes down to your perception of what people are saying about it.

No, it's not really just because people are saying it regressed from the m8.

Reviews are stating that it's not that color accurate and that colors (especially black) are "washed out".

  2. While they say that the display may be a slight downgrade from the M8's screen, it is far from being an "issue". It's still one of the best displays out there, still looks great, and still got a 10/10 rating on the Verge review.

It's not like it's one review or one outlet giving the display a bad rating...so it's kind of hard to just downplay it. This is from Anandtech:

“Although we’re still missing some of the pieces, based upon what data we have the One M9 is in an alarming place for a new smartphone. It’s pretty rare that a new phone ends up regressing in almost every major way compared to an old phone, but the One M9 ends up doing this in display and battery life.

  3. This may end up being the first htc device I don't get on release day, I may just wait it out a week or two to see how it goes.

My wife is in desperate need of a replacement phone (my old one, lol) but I'm sitting on both this and the s6 for a week or so to see how the user reviews go. As much as I would like to hop on one right away, I'm going to hold off.

  4. In terms of the display, out of all of the reviews I've read not one said that it was disappointing. They said that colors are slightly warmer on the newer display when compared to the one on the M8.

What reviews have you read? MOST of them mention issues of some kind with the display.

Straight from Engadget's review, right at the top under pros and cons:

    • Screen isn't as vivid as last year's model

The M9's LCD is altogether much cooler than the M8's, which makes for crisper, more neutral whites at the expense of slightly less impactful blacks. I spend more time than I'd like to admit poking around on Instagram every day, but the difference couldn't have been any clearer than there -- colors were much punchier on the M8's screen, while the flower, puppy, graffiti and food pictures Instagram is notorious for came across as less saturated and, dare I say, neutered on the M9. Your mileage may vary (I've always preferred the slight oversaturation of AMOLED screens), but a certain dose of pop that made some photos come alive on last year's model is gone here, and I'm frankly bummed because of it.

I'm not ruling this phone out myself, but it's hard not to see the issues when most all of the reviews list those 2 items as the main issues.

  5. There are a couple Intl contributors to XDA that are showing photos taken post OTA's and they are drastically different results. Too early for a verdict imo.

Pretty sure one of the reviews I read said they hadn't seen major improvements in camera post update.
  6. But your eyes always adjust. You can't fight nature. You're not running Photoshop on the phone, and I find it silly to worry about a screen that few people could declare inferior if they were just pick up the phone in a store.

So you find it silly that the color not being true bothers me.

But you made a big deal about polarization?

  7. After a few mins, your eyes will adjust. Bigger issue is with polarization when wearing polarized sunglasses. M8 has to be held horizontally to be visible.

Curios how battery tests will change after the update.

The blueish and greenish hue shouldn't exist on a $600 device. My eyes shouldn't need to "adjust".

The N5 is opposite so I found out, have to hold it upright with polarized lenses.
  9. Disappointing display? Not sure what you're referring to.

Clearly there is a large firmware update that hit international units today. The camera software / post processing absolutely could be improved in that update as other international users have already discussed.

Check some of the reviews, like Android Central. The colors leave much to be desired.

  10. I think we still have to remember that all of these reviews, I believe, are on unlocked international versions that are not the shipping US hardware.

Not 15 minutes ago, there was a tweet from an overseas user that the unlocked international version just got a 350 mg over-the-air firmware update. Personally I am not putting a lot of confidence in these reviews until I know it is on a shipping US version.

True, but a US version likely won't have any change to the disappointing display and camera.
  11. The embargo has been lifted, so the reviews are coming in:

    Android Central, phone arena, verge

    Sent from my Tapatalk 4.9.5

    Yes, I downgraded. :-D

Reviews look great to me, other than the camera still lagging behind Samsung and other makers.

Waiting to see some better comparisons between the m9 and the s6 as far as battery life and reception. Having the N5 currently, almost any camera will be an upgrade, lol.

  12. Anyone having issues with the camera app force closing? Like 50 pct of the time, when I go to open it, it crashes. I've tried force stop, uninstalling updates and reinstalling, and the only thing that gets it working again is restarting the phone.

  13. HTC is the only one that will replace your glass for free under 6 mo. Samsung will take your $150.

    Dang.

I'm always amazed how these things pass so many "rigorous" tests but a 2 year old drops it and it shatters into 1000 cracks.

  14. Smh, not too impressed with the all too similar design but spec wise it's great. Honestly though I am really feeling the s6 edge so I may end up getting one of each.

I was all about this one, but like you, the S6 Edge has now caught my eye. I didn't like the curved edge on the Note Edge, but the dual curved edge... My my I'm in love.
  15. Just now my phone had 2 unexpected reboots. Once when trying to answer a call and the other after hanging up.

Suddenly the phone displayed the black screen with the colored circles zipping around and then displayed "android" on the screen before restarting.

  16. Are you clearing all the recent apps? If so that could be a problem, the system memory management doesn't like force closing apps and often reloads them immediately causing lag and potentially redraws.

I've updated three devices to 5.0 so far. Two handled it fine, and saw the performance gains after a day of settling. The third one kept lagging and having battery issue until I did a factory reset.. It had been a dream ever since.

With the same settings on 5.0 as on KitKat I'm seeing performance and battery gains across all 3 devices.

I get the lag sometimes too, when returning to the home screen sometimes.

I also have the same issue with my phone constantly dropping signal and then rescanning. Happened at home in NC and in Michigan on vacation.
