  1. I've moved from Pixel XL to Pixel 2 XL.  I think the reception is worse than in Pixel 1 XL.  I've got very low reception in my condo, so my phone is usually parked on Band 26.  In rooms where I used to get calls, I see Pixel 2 XL with RSRP of -114 - 116.  In blunt terms, my phone doesn't always ring anymore.  In the meantime, still waiting for that magic box that we qualified for back in June. :(

My Pixel XL is doing quit nice!

I've been checking Ampere over the last year, and when the phone was new, the battery rarely went over 30C.  These days, you pick it up to check email, and the battery temperature shoots up to 40+C.  Battery life is taking a hit these days.  My Nexus 6P did that after only 6 months, but it's clear that batteries in the Google Phones aren't designed to last more than 6-12 months.

  3. I'm not quite ready for losing the headphone jack, so might stick with my Pixel XL 128GB for one more year.    While I see usb-c someday being a solution along with bluetooth, but when you're traveling and trying to watch a movie on your seatback screen, you better have headphones that work with the headphone jack.

Getting lightning or USB-C or BT headphones doesn't solve that problem.  argh. :(  Buying more dongles or new headphones doesn't resound well with my mantra of traveling light.

Now, if Sprint + TM merger happens AND Pixel 2 supports B71.... that might be a different story.

  4. Yeah 3xCA has been live on the Pixel. It was pushed as a profile update mid-May. It's just that SF doesn't have many sites with 3 carriers, though it seems that's been changing. Check the last post I made in the SF thread to see the ones found so far. There are likely more by now, assuming that wasn't just a trial period.

You're right.  I'm actually never near any of the 3x sites.  Good thing that they are showing up quickly!

  5. 100mb or 1X? What were you doing :)) That sucks that they just cut you off 100%, not reduce the speed :((

Any way to buy a bucket of additional roaming data either for the billing period or monthly, etc????

Yea, I was going through feedly and reading news.  Then again, my phone could've been doing something else, so really need to pay attention to those data saver modes.  Kinda sad they don't just throttle you or allow messaging traffic to go through.  Cuz if you're on iphone, you need data for imessage.  On Android, at least we get "downgraded" to SMS which is unlimited while roaming.

A Sprint spokeswoman on Tuesday said the carrier flipped the switch on three-carrier aggregation, pushing out automatic updates to enable the technology on six new devices.

According to the spokeswoman, Sprint customers using the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, LG V20, and LG G5 received the update on Friday. The move raised the total number of three-carrier aggregation-enabled devices on Sprint’s network to seven; HTC’s Bolt recently launched with three-carrier aggregation enabled out of the box.

The spokeswoman said a total of 13 devices are three-carrier aggregation capable, but the carrier has yet to enable the feature on the other six devices.

Pixel isn't called out here, but here's to hoping that with the February update, 3x CA gets flipped on on the Pixel.

Any word if 3x CA got flipped on as part of the March update?

  8. SCP does not currently have a way of detecting CA status. It can only tell you which carrier you are currently connected to as the primary carrier. The 2 and 3 superscripts, as noted above, only tell you if you are connected to the 2nd or 3rd carrier. (1st carrier is just labeled as B41)

Until SCP finds a way to detect CA status, one way is to get out an old phone that can only do 2xCA (like Nexus 6P) and set it next to your 3xCA phone (like Pixel XL) and run side by side speed test.  If 3x CA is indeed enabled, then you should see roughly 50% higher speeds.  If speeds are the same, then 3xCA is probably not enabled either on the tower or your phone.

Seeing 2nd and 3rd carrier in SCP is largely a "hint" that this tower probably does or will support some level of CA.

  9. BTW.   According to this post, despite the fact that Pixel support 3x CA, it seems like Sprint needs to whitelist our phones to use it:

    https://www.cnet.com/news/sprints-hidden-a-secret-turbo-boost-in-your-phone/

"The capability, which Sprint plans to deliver as a software update pushed over the air, will let Sprint's phones tap into a technology called 3 x carrier aggregation -- a technical term for Sprint's ability to create a fatter pipe to deliver you YouTube videos and Taylor Swift songs. Other devices slated to get an update include LG's G5 and Google's Pixel."

That explains why Pixel XL doesn't seem to be seeing any faster speeds than Nexus 6P.  Wonder if B25-B25 2x CA is enabled with this update too.

  10. I've been having the LTE dropping issue extensively since day one with my Pixel XL.  Happens when fast moving (car), slow moving (run), and still at my house.  I can consistently get it to happen just walking from the front of my house to my back alley (seems to switch towers).  Switching to 3G COMPLETELY alleviates the problem.  Not a single drop anywhere.

Spoke with Google, who was useless (told me to get a new SIM, check some settings, talk to Sprint.)  I did these, emailed them back, and they told me to talk to Sprint again.

Sprint has tried, but been less than helpful thus far.  Spoke with tech support who had me try to reprovision a number of times (they kept giving me HTC dialer codes which didn't work, which baffled them).  They put in a request to check the towers near my home, but this isn't something that only happens there.  I did notice (by driving around with Signalcheck open) a nice long stretch the other day where I had multiple tower changes and no drop at all.  I've been meaning to look at the tower maps to see if perhaps there's some correlation.

I had this type of problem way back when LTE was just rolling out with my Nexus 5 too.  I've got drops with my XL in a number of the same places, though, never had the problem in the slightest with my Nexus 5X.

Probably a regression from the latest Dec update....

Hopefully you can last until January, so Google rarely does out-of-cycle updates.

  11. Just thinking outloud, but why does would Sprint keep adding only 20MHz carriers.  In tech industry, you need to change things in order of magnitude, so while we start with 1 20MHz B41.  Adding second carrier doubled the bandwidth.  3rd carrier only increased it by 50% (and even less when you factor in B26 and 2xB25).  So my question is this.

Why isn't the third B41 carrier 40MHz?  Why have 6 B41 carriers each 20 Mhz instead of fewer 40 MHz or 60MHz carriers?

  12. Samsung has had RCS support built into their stock app for some time now. However the fact that Samsung devices as well as Nexus/Pixel device on Sprint are getting this notification about RCS at the same time indicates to me that this is a rollout on Sprint's side as opposed to Google managing it.

Also yeah, RCS should provide better picture and video quality though there may still be a size limit. I know on T-Mobile RCS messaging, you can't send files larger than 10MB.

I still remember those damn size limits on my EVO.  Limit was 2MB for MMS, but god forbid my photo ends up 2100KB, it'll get shrunk by the app down to 20KB.  I ended up retaking photos at slightly lower res to get things through.

On my Pixel, i actually switched to using Facebook for SMS.  This at least cuts down the number of messaging apps I need to use, plus it's easy to send bigger videos via FB rather than MMS.  Next question is whether FB Messenger supports RCS too?

  13. I just got my Pixel XL and upgraded from Nexus 6P reusing the old SIM.  Sprint online activation was fast and smooth.  It's a shame it's taken this long, but glad not have to chat with international support.

I chose not to copy settings from the 6P, since I suspect some settings might be responsible for miserable battery life that I have.  Plus, i wanted to re-evaluate the decision on all the apps.

However, does anyone know if I can selectively copy the Wi-Fi networks from the old phone?
