  1. So I read up on your link and think I understand the issue. The USB C side allows 3A per the resistor they put in it but the normal USB side can only supply 2.4A (I believe) per the specifications for that connector. So the possibility exists that someone could find an out of spec 3A capable charger with a normal USB connection that provides over 2.4A and thus could potentially damage the cable.

I started getting the first batch of cables, and I need to rethink my strategy of getting fastest USB 3.0 -C cables.  The cables are "hella" big: both the plugs are twice as long and cable is 2-3x as thick as my older MicroUSB cables.  The first cable won't allow to close the center console in my car and won't fit through the cable slots towards the cup holder - where the phone barely fits anyway.  Take a look of what I mean:

Connector: USB 3.0 cable vs USB 2.0 cable

Also, the 3A capability and special resistors are really needed for running 3A at 20V to charge a MacBook or ChromeBook.  Google wants to highlight the capabilities of USB-C, so we get a one size fits all cable.

I'll try to order some USB-A / USB-C  2.0 cables and will report back.  Also, if anyone has ordered cables from Amazon that are substantially thinner than what ships with the phone and are of USB-A / USB-C type, please post a few links.

  2. I've never kept track of Google devices, but interested in the 6p... Anyone know how long before you can get the device online/in-store from carrier? I'd kinda like to go see it in-person and decide for sure..

I heard that Google wants to promote its online store along with other hardware, so the phones will not be offered in carrier stores.  Best Buy, perhaps?  Perhaps at Google stores in malls?

  3. I wanted to know has anyone noticed when coming off a phone call for those who still use the phone to make calls! The phone takes a while to reconnect to LTE and will park on EVDO 3G for little bit before it does connect. Figuring that it's a scan time issue as it only happens intermittently! But something I'm not used to coming from other single radio devices usually it connects to band 2,6 25, if Band 41 is available then Band 41 soon afterwards.

I find the opposite to be true, but that's coming from an HTC M8, I find that that phone is parked on LTE longer and switches from 3G to LTE faster.   LTE scan times are certainly more aggressive than my last phone.

  4. Here are my opinions of the 6P after having it for a few days that might not have been covered yet:

    * Size: if the width of the phone could be 2-3 millimeters smaller, the phone would fit more easily into cup holders.  While the phone does fit in my car's cup holder, it does so only at a certain angle and sometimes power button gets pressed turning it off.  On the train, the phone is also a very tight fit.  Maybe next year the screen bezel can be narrowed a tiny bit.

    * Headphone jack should be at the bottom.  After coming from iPod Nanos, HTC M8 and iPhones, I'm convinced that headphone jack should be at the bottom.  In the cases where the phone is charging and playing music, it's less cluttered when all cables come out from the same end.

    * Wish phone had Optical Image Stabilizer for videos.

    * USB-C & Rapid charging - Oh man, trying to replace the following charging cables: 2 cars, 3 house locations, 1 work location, 1 external battery and 1 backpack spare forces me consider the following:

       - Should I get USB-C / USB-C or USB-A / USB-C cable?

       - What should I buy to replace my QuickCharge chargers?

       - My external battery has a built-in Micro-USB cable.  What to replace it with?

       - Should I get USB 2.0 or USB 3.1 cables?

       - Selection and availability of cable types and lengths is much more limited, causing me to spend lengthy times on amazon comparing cables.

       - RapidChargers are not usually labelled as such.

       - Spec confusion: according to specs it seemed like only cables rated for USB 3.1 speeds support 3A at 5V and give you rapid charging.  Supposedly, this would exclude any USB-C / USB-A cabling.  Also implies your charger should have a USB-C plug...  I don't think that's the case anymore, but surely was confusing.

       - This last part is a rant, but I'm sure some of you how are anal about their charges will relate

  5. Hmmm. It seems my 3 amp car charger with a high speed USB cable (Standard USB plug to Type C) charges faster than my Google provided wall charger with Type C to Type C cable. If it's not faster, then it's nearly identical. It screams in comparison to my old charging scenarios.

    Using Tapatalk on Note 8.0

I've playing around with various charger and cable combinations, but only the included charger/usbc-usbc cable makes the phone display "Rapid Charging" on the lock screen.  In your case 3 amp car charger, do you see "rapid charging" on the displayed?

  6. While shopping for cables, I ran into these comments from a Google engineer who worked on the charging cables:

    http://www.amazon.com/review/R2IS3PG73PF5N0/ref=cm_cr_dp_cmt?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B010VFFRCE&channel=detail-glance&nodeID=2335752011&store=wireless#wasThisHelpful

I'm still trying to replace my collection of micro-USB/QuickCharge cables throughout the car, house, work, but it's become clear that if you want Rapid Charging, then you need a cable that's USB-C on both ends...

  7. Did you read the thread referenced for activation/SIM info?

    http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/7282-nexus-5x-user-thread-lg-h790/

Sent from my 0PJA2 using Tapatalk

I was scrolling back in this thread for about 5 pages before giving up, and it didn't occur to me to look at the 5x forum.

Anyway, can we pin the activation thread to the Huawai forum?  I'm disappointed with Sprint that I couldn't just walk into a sprint store to get it activated.  Nano-SIM is about as small of an item to stock as you get.

  8. I'm having a hard time getting the phone activated with Sprint mostly due to lack of extra nano-SIms.  My question is this:  Can I remove the nano-sim from my HTC M8, place it in the Nexus 6p and go through sprint activation process?

Is there a reason why did wouldn't work?  Is there something special about the nano-sim that goes into the Nexus?   I've called 5 stores and most don't have it in stock while one of them might have some tomorrow.

  9. How long do I need to own the leased phone?  I ordered a Nexus 6p, so didn't want to commit to a leased phone.

You should have tried this.  According to this, you could have switched to the new plan if you "upgrade" to a new leased phone:  http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/7246-upgrade-date-suddenly-changed-from-months-to-now/&do=findComment&comment=448726

Then you wouldn't have to pay extra for the few months.

  10. Alright.  So I went into Sprint trying to switch my  $80 plan.  The guy was pretty sharp and said that contract will remain, but that we need to make a change to the account that will force me into the $60 unlimited plan.  He offered two options:

    1) Add a low cost tablet to the plan, remove it after two months

    2) Add a second line to the plan.  remove it after two month

In the end, I picked #1 since I'm going on a trip and a tablet will be useful.  It's a slate 8" tablet with a 1GB plan.  I'm now on the $60 plan, but pay an extra $25 for the tablet and plan.  Sprint gives me $10/month credit, so I'm already down to $75/month.

However, when I cancel, I'll be on the hook for $240 for the tablet.  I'll try to sell the tablet, but with a $60 plan, I'll recover the cost after 12 months.

    So there you go!

  11. so do you plan to pay for both plans until March?  You are kinda stuck because wouldn't you want to port your number or would you get a temporary phone number just to lock in the rate.  Why not just activate an old smartphone just to get the $60 plan but then the question is would you then ETF out of your $80 plan?

Yea, looks like I need to pay a visit to a store to explore the options.  $20/month savings can be put to paying down a phone.

  12. See here:

    http://newsroom.sprint.com/news-releases/sprint-says-hurry-in-before-its-too-late-last-two-weeks-to-get-unlimited-high-speed-data-talk-and-text-for-just-60month.htm

I'm currently on the $80/month plan.  My contract ends in March, so wondering what my options are.  Any suggestions?

I've also ordered a new P6 phone, but won't have that until November.  Should I try a  promotion with a cheap phone just to grab the $60/month?  Otherwise, $80 will include subsidy that I won't need.

  13. I do not know whether it is an indication of bad planning -- especially in Silicon Valley -- or a sign of the apocalypse that a DAS at a year old stadium had to be redone and expanded already.  "Unlimited" wireless data needs to die, and people need to get back in the real world.  Otherwise, people should stop going to pro sporting events.  Stay at home, watch on the big screen across the living room -- at the few times when not staring at the small screen in hand.  Maybe, then, ticket prices for people who actually want to watch the pro sporting events in person will come back down to earth.

    AJ

When I went there last year, the WiFi was using WPA with no keys published on the ticket or anywhere obvious.  That forced me to Sprint's network which was useless.  Given that one selling point is to order food and beer with your phone to have it delivered to your seat, I was disappointed when I couldn't use it.

  14. Well,

The permit for the Sprint site on the Castro Theater was one of the worst. Took 2 yrs 3 mos to get approved.

The notes on the permit approval mention:

Sounds like they might have managed to get 8t8r approved with the original permit from 2012.

I know the backhaul was set back by the sidewalk construction. That took forever and was even mentioned in the permit notes too:

Are there any remaining permits that Sprint is waiting for?  It feels like it have taken less time to put up a new tower nearby.  The tower density isn't great, and with this one down, I can't imagine how bad service at Dolores Park on a sunny weekend.

  15. I hope these three areas are somewhere on the list for 2015:

    1) Market & Castro - no sign of life for such major destination and how long has Vision been going?

    2) Muni underground station - The current DAS in there is like a donut.  Can't even an SMS through.

    3) Forget LTE, how about just 1x800 between Bay Area and LA.

Overall, things are pretty good in bay area.  I wish my phone M8 would try to get a lock LTE signal longer before going 3G, since after a short elevator ride, it might sit on 3G for a few mins before going back.

  16. I noticed recently that my M8 stops connecting to LTE and stays on 3G/1x after I ride the elevator or visit a place with low connectivity.  I need to redo self-activation to fix it.  This seems to have have regressed with the Lollipop upgrade, but I'm wondering if that's the same issue affecting the M9.

If that happens to you, go to Settings -> Activate Device -> Reset Cellular Data.  After the phone reboots a couple times, let me know if the issue is fixed.

  17. Does anybody know if Sprint in San Francisco has sorted out their CSFB issues?

I was a Spint customer for 10yrs+ until last year, when I got a Nexus 5. After struggling with LTE (and support rep) issues, I finally just threw in the towel and stuck an ATT sim in my Nexus.

On ATT I'm getting 30down/20up... when my phone sees LTE (at work). When it doesn't (at home), I'm at about 13down/2up.

The thing I miss more than bandwidth, however is Google Voice integration. With ATT my phone rings for the call, then if I don't pick up, it rings again as it goes to VM... Outgoing calls don't show my GV number... I  hoped Google would integrate with other carriers, but at this point I can't see that happening.

    Anyway...

Any Nexus 5 users out there happy with their SF LTE service?

The big switch was flipped around December and now SF is an official Spark market.  Night and day difference compared 2014.

  18. New report out on SF:

    http://www.rootmetrics.com/us/rsr/san-francisco-ca/2015/1H

    The fun stats:

This marks the eighth time we’ve tested the San Francisco market. Our previous round of testing occurred in August 2014.

AT&T and Verizon shared the Overall RootScore Award. During our testing in August, Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile shared this award.

Since our testing in August, Sprint’s median download speed increased from 4.0 Mbps to 9.1 Mbps, and Sprint’s median upload speed increased from 2.1 Mbps to 4.3 Mbps.

T-Mobile’s median download speed increased from 15.1 Mbps to 18.5 Mbps since August, and T-Mobile’s median upload speed increased from 12.8 Mbps to 19.4 Mbps.

Verizon’s median download speed increased from 11.2 Mbps to 16.9 Mbps, and Verizon’s median upload speed increased from 8.4 Mbps to 11.0 Mbps.

  19. This is what I do.  I find it to be more reliable that Sprint's voice network.

Two main downsides of google voice:

    no call waiting

    no 3-way calling

Overall, it has been a great solution for me.  I couldn't be happier.

For me, the big downside of GV is no HD Voice.

  20. Very excited to see LTE underground on BART! I think they upgraded the DAS between Colma and SFO. I didn't get LTE underground anywhere else and the SINR was way too high to be coming from an aboveground site.

Oh wow. Almost looking forward to riding BART. Is the DAS shared in Muni subway under Market?
  21. Do you mean disable evdo? I'm not sure why you would want to do that, you won't get back on LTE any faster. Besides, you would still have "3G" data from 1x when you lose LTE.

Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

Well, I lose LTE for the 10 second ride in the elevator, so 3G isn't going to save me. But then I wouldn't be stuck on EVDO or 1x four minutes after getting off the elevator.
  22. Do you think it's time for a device like M9 to have an option where I can disable 2G and 3G data?  When I'm at home or commuting, it's rare that I leave LTE area, but when my phone drops off LTE, it takes a while for it to come back.  Voice, of course, would remain on 3G.  Is this something ROOTed phones already allow?
