  1. Seems like there was an update since a few days ago I was able to move it from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz on my Google WiFi.  It used to be that Magic Box Gold would get an error connecting, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was a software update that fixed that.

Sounds like that software update didn't enable VoLTE yet, but I haven't tried that.

Mine seemed to be better too, but I wasn't sure if I was paying close enough attention.. it would be awesome if it was resolved.

It was a huge pain for me on Caltrain.  I'd be tethering, so I'd lose data.  I'd have to toggle airplane mode, then re-enable tethering.  And then wait for my laptop to "rediscover" my phone and reconnect.  Easily a minute of work would be lost while I wait for things to be back to normal.  And with 4 tunnels, it's a lot of work or a long wait...

Same exact things are happening to me here in the Boston area. It's becoming very annoying. I resisted from toggling airplane mode the other day and remained roaming for over 6 hours in an area I know Sprint has had good LTE coverage for years. It also seems to struggle to pick LTE back up on its own once it drops back to 3G.. even when in areas of extremely strong LTE signal. Airplane toggle usually grabs LTE immediately, but we shouldn't need to do that.

Hopefully it's a software issue that can be resolved quickly. I have been trying to remember to report it through the My Sprint app, but not sure how helpful that really is.

This finally is fixed for me in the March update.  Amazing how quickly the phone gets LTE after a tunnel or elevator ride.

That's a big update.  I wonder if along the way the fix the problem where phone won't do LTE after losing signal due to a tunnel or an elevator getting stuck either roaming on TM, stuck on 3G or not having any data at all.

Looks like Carrier Services got updated for me today via Google Play.  I wonder if that's how update gets pushed?

    Interesting, Thanks for sharing @ingenium

We just moved and the new house merits a MagicBox. I have the Gold model.

We have gigabit (true 1000up and 1000down) ethernet and also observed a maximum DL speed of approx 60-70mbps IIRC w/ ethernet backhaul on the MagicBox Gold.

Shame because I see regular DL speeds of 100-140mbps on Sprint LTE in the DFW area, including within .5 miles of my home. It was nice to have a fallback connection of 100+mbps at our old address on Sprint LTE. I have since left the MagicBox on LTE backhaul and seem to get about 40mbps max in limited testing.

...You would think the MagicBox could output a higher speed when fed with 1gbps wired connection.

edit: I could also try wifi backhaul, but I would guess it provides an even worse experience compared to ideal situation ethernet backhaul should provide.

Could you give WiFi a try and see what results you get on it?  (Bonus if you can try 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz, since I could only get it to connect to the 2.4 GHz channel to my Google WiFi).

Magic Box gold is the highest tier magic box which is not readily offered to non business customers.

The Magic Box silver and Gen1/2s are their main offerings.

What constitutes a business customer?  Would an HOA which would want one to cover basement of thousands of residents constitute as a "business customer"?

I usually encounter this after my Caltrain goes through tunnels.  This morning i was pleasantly surprised to see my phone still connected to LTE.  This seems to have come out after/independently of the Dec update.  Has anyone else noticed improved there?

*sigh*.  Must have been a fluke.  Problem persists... :(

I changed the backhaul to WiFi and did a speediest. I get about the same results as LTE backhaul. On the other hand if I leave WiFi on on the phone itself I get twice the performance. Is there a way to aggregate the links? LTE backhauled cellular + WiFi?

On your phone without modifying the network stack - area that's pretty locked down.

But there is a standard that would allow carriers to use Wi-Fi frequency for downlink.  Not sure how I feel about that, since Wi-Fi bandwidth doesn't share as efficiently as LTE (at least not until both phone + router are Wi-Fi 6).

  11. Yep. Unlocking is really fast and reliable.  It's almost too reliable since i sometimes hold my phone with palm touching the screen, and if I wave it at the right angle, it'll get unlocked and my hand will be activating things on the screen.

What is the trick for activating eSIM on this phone? I have been on the phone with Sprint for 45 minutes and they just want me to keep factory resetting the phone. So irritating.

When I go to the network menu and tap the plus button, then Sprint, it comes up with an error that i can't be activated. The IMEI and EID number have all been entered in on Sprints end. I have the unlocked Pixel 4 XL. I have had no problem activating eSIM on the previous Pixels I've had so I kinda thought I knew what I was doing :(

I had that problem with my Pixel 3 XL a month before I got my Pixel 4 XL.  I'd just get an error on the eSIM side.  They made me reset network settings - which sucked since none of my Wi-Fi networks were restored on the Pixel 4 XL. - there's some posts from me about that on the Pixel 3 forum.

I think there's something bad in the way the Pixel 4 XL is entered into Sprint's system in a way that's not fixable.  You might need to get a physical SIM and hope for better luck on Pixel 5 XL.

One thing I've noticed when it comes to roaming on the Pixel 4 XL is once it's locked into roaming either a restart or toggling airplane mode is required to get it back on Sprint's network. Very frustrating.

I have very weak Sprint signal at my home in Henderson, NV so the phone will lock onto TMobile B2/B4. When I leave my home it'll just continue to stay on TMobile unless I do the above. Any ideas? Anyway to eliminate the phone from doing this?

I've got the same exact problem.  Because I need to take an elevator anytime I leave my place, I'm always outside with no-service since sometime phone will even refuse to roam (or maybe TM isn't available).

I'm worried it's one of those things where Sprint will blame Google and Google will blame Sprint.  I wish there was a group chat where I can have both support folks arguing with each other.

I have a question I'm going to buy an unlocked pixel 4xl on Friday and will be activating it on sprint. I just wanted to know if wifi calling and mobile hotspot will work. Thanks

Yup.  Both worked for me within minutes of completing eSIM setup.

  16. No problems for me and do it many times a day.

I do find the new phone taking longer to find LTE after going through the elevator or a tunnel.  And even then, it gets stuck on 3G.
