  1. The 2G data in Europe was too slow. Even Google Maps struggled to come up. 3G data was much better. I'd suggest Open World for that reason. $30/GB is reasonable.

Yup, same experience. Global roaming was useless on Sprint as most Web pages and google maps failed to load. Meanwhile my wife had Tmobile and her 2g was fast enough even to tether my wife's family on. When sprint advertises KBps, they means Kbps (I verified this with customer service).

I ended up switching to Open World so I could have a working phone. Still waiting to hear what the damage was. Granted it was nerve racking because the networks that Sprint customer service told me to use had different names in the network selection.

  2. Sprint has different contracts for B41 install. When the new site was added, B41 was already contracted to someone else. They had to receive a Change Order for that work. That all has to be negotiated.

Eventually, once we get past the deployment stages, new sites will get deployed with everything all at once.

That sounds good. I'm hoping that Sprint has a GIS work order bundling system so that visually Sprint can see when these occur and try and proactively put the work and contracts together. I just instituted this at our company.
  3. I am selling all my sprint stock and dropped their service after over 13 years. This shows they are not trying to be number 1 and it shows just how crappy their existing advisors/employees are to convince management to be so foolish. In Orange County, even double the amount of macro towers would not be satisfactory as I roam in must buildings and get LTE in less buildings then I have fingers. Perhaps in other states sprint is different, but even B26 will not fix no signal and roaming.

  4. They fixed the tower issue in Aliso Viejo. Unfortunately they fixed it by disabling the B41 for now. The problems started once they enabled it in the first place though so the fix made sense. The problem was a fall back to 3g or no signal when close to the tower and the dropping of calls. It took about 3 weeks for sprint to fix with no sprint care calls from me so I'm hopeful.

  5. I don't get why there is any hate on Tmobile for this... This is a good move and one that clearly trumps Sprint. You can argue that Sprint has never throttled users and for that I'd say I don't care. Sprint has stated an absurd plan in the past to limit the top 5 or so percent and gave 5 gbps as a number. I don't even use 5 a month typically but I agree that up to 100 gbps should easily be allowed as long as it does not subvert Sprint's terms and service. Oh wait... Tethering isn't allowed on Sprint unless you pay more... ???? this is clearly a win for consumers and net neutrality does not come into the argument.

  6. I wonder if people who go off on a tangent about signal reception inside a building ever consider the materials used in the making of a building that they are in. Some buildings these days act like faradays' cage in that signals don't get in and out to well, so before you go blasting whoever, think about that.

That's why I'm excited about small cells. The South Coast Plaza, probably the most popular mall in OC, drops to 3g or Roaming almost instantly when walking indoors even though it is surrounded by macro cells.
  7. I think this shows that Tmobile has a good model that others should adopt. Having expensive overages or overages at all is something I could never switch to. I do appreciate that Sprint has unlimited though which is one of the reasons that Sprint is on the bottom of this report.

  8. Hmmmm... Happy to see Sprint trying things, but their old idea was a pretty good one in my opinion as long as their threshold was low on when to add B41. Nothing makes my cringe more than seeing B41 in the middle of nowhere. The reason I say this is because it costs money to deploy and to have that level of fiber available. For a company with a lot of debt, just doesn't make sense to deploy where you do not need it (example: markets with B25 ~12 mbps or greater).

  9. My nexus 5 doesn't seem to switch to LTE from 3g when coming into service. Does anyone know why the phone would do this? Most times I have to reboot it or switch airplane mode on and off to get it to connect.

A couple things... One is LTE scan times. Your phone only scans periodically for LTE. Unfortunately your phone scans less the longer it is on 3g from what I understand. Secondly, it would scan for LTE if there is data use during when the scan would occur. So, if you are streaming or whatnot or have apps that are using data, then your phone will stay on 3g until you airplane reset.
  10. What is Sprint's current perception in their own Metro? Some of the quotes about wanting Sprint to do more locally were a big tell. I think the ideal if you want Sprint to be in KC would be them rooting in with charity and the community like what Anheuser-Busch did in St. Louis. AB had a great sales and local culture. It was said that August III, the Busch family member who built Anheuser-Busch into a global powerhouse, could sell anyone and make them AB customers for life. That's the sort of sales culture Sprint needs.

Yet Sprint also has to control costs, obviously, because if I want to continue the AB comp, the entire reason InBev was able to get AB was that AB didn't exactly keep control of costs. They got too fat and too happy. I realize that some might scoff at the beer to network comparisons, but I do see some similarities.

Third, how is KC's airport? In STL's case, they got hurt because of the TWA bankruptcy and the impending shutdown of the American Airlines hub.

Besides providing great service in KC, I don't think Sprint should give any special treatment to KC over other markets. Being loved in a relatively small market does not help in larger cities. I for one love marketing smartly, but I would give up all Arena and sport sponsorships as I don't see any return on investment. Airport ads, billboards, and TV ads are probably much better. I can't turn around and not see Tmobile everywhere I turn.
  11. Let's be clear about a few things

    1) HD Voice isn't VoLTE, it's just wideband audio codecs for voice calls. An HD Voice call system can be integrated into 1x, EDGE, HSPA+, and LTE.

    2) Sprint's 1xRTT is superior only in the sense that 800MHz is deployed in a 1x Advanced system, which allows for greater capacity of voice traffic and more coverage.

    3) 1xRTT on Sprint currently does not support VoLTE handoff, Sprint does not have VoLTE as of now, but it is in the pipeline. The plan is to make VoLTE handoff to 1x, and they're working on it, but it's no promises. The only prototype system ever establish has an 80% success rate or so, possibly lower than that.

Hope we're all clear about this!

I hope they don't do VoLTE until they fix the hand-off issue. It wouldn't be worth the poor customer experience even if they could make data speeds improve
  12. I've noticed in a few locations where there's a new(er) Sprint B41 site and Clear site relatively nearby that they have either powered down or lowered power on the Clear site.

I can see how in general this would make sense, however I know of at least one location where it may have looked good on paper, but in practice it has led to diminished coverage. In the case I'm thinking of the Clear site had better line of sight to the surrounding area. The new Sprint B41 site is blocked by tall office buildings.

This may be the case or a part of the problem. I noticed this was around the same time as they changed the band priorities. It appears to not jump on B41 as fast, to jump off B41 early instead of holding it until ~131, and to jump off LTE altogether at around 118 to 3g (or no signal for a couple seconds and then 3g even though there is strong sprint signal in that location).
  13. I don't know about Brea... there is one tower in particular that I am usually connected to during the day and I used to get a decent band 41 signal indoors, but now it's completely gone. I can only get unusable 3G now. Similar problem on my home tower. I used to be connected consistently to band 25, but now it bounces back and forth to 3G and rarely stays on band 25 for very long.

I've noticed the same thing in Brea. Do you recall if these were Clearwire B41 signals before? I still think something is wrong in OC. I'm waiting for this mysterious "big data" thing to work and to see that people went from 80% or more on LTE to 50% or less while driving.
