  1. Does anyone know if shentel gets a list of amont of roaming and where that roaming took place? I am camping and it seems like only us cellular has data. Weak sprint 3G from 15 miles away and verizon is only 1x. I am fine with it the roaming data I was just curious.

I also took a trip to kingwood WV so hopefully I was able to collect some data. It was mostly roaming us cellular and 3g on WV26 going down. I did take a speedtest on nTelos lte with rootmetric at autozone.

I don't know for sure, but I doubt Shentel gets info on roaming for individual users. Sprint takes care of all the billing, per their agreement. They (Shentel) may get aggregated user data from Sprint to help plug "holes" in their network where a lot of roaming data is used.

  2. I can tell you what I figured out. After the marshmallow update I set up encryption on my phone and mine would inevitably reboot about once a day after it was sitting for a while and I would pick it up and hit the home button. I think I finally figured out that Doze was putting the fingerprint reader and security processes into deep sleep. So whenever I went to wake up the phone once it was out for a while it would go a bit crazy trying to wake up and re-authenticate the security settings. I went into the battery settings and turned off battery optimization for all of the apps that seemed like they were security related. Since then my phone hasn't done a reboot since.

So even if you don't have encryption turned on or use the finger print reader you might want to check that out. Maybe turn off doze for every app and see how that goes. Then add doze back one app at a time.

I just turned off the battery optimizations. I'll run it for a few days like this and see what happens. Thanks for the tip.

  3. Was it always doing reboots or is it just since the marshmallow update?

Just since the update to marshmallow, that's why I don't really think it's hardware related. I've done a factory reset and it didn't fix it.

  4. Just once with any battery you have. Preferably a Samsung branded battery

I did it last night. So far so good, but sometimes it would go a day or two with not rebooting itself, then reboot 4 or 5 times in a row. I'll report back after a few days. Hopefully this is the fix though.

  5. If you're experiencing random rebooting or powering down, try this:

With battery at 100% type *#0BAT# (that's a zero) in the dial pad.

Unplug phone and then click on "quick test" and the screen will shut off and come back on

If battery shows 100% after the test then you're good to go.

This re calibrates the battery which the new updates messed up. 90 percent of power cycling Note 4's I've seen come into my work has been fixed this way and it doesn't require a hard reset to complete!

    Hope this helps

I have 3 batteries. Do I need to do this with all three batteries?

  6. Afton Mountain is way up there. Richmond TV, for example, comes booming in, very strong. Wouldn't surprise me if you connected to something far away.

I had a GCI 00008018 appear on my S5 while changing sites and determined it was a device bug. Is that what you saw?

    - Trip

It had a bunch of zeros at the front. Maybe it was just a fluke.

  7. I picked up a weird GCI in Charlottesville a little bit ago that started in 000. It came up as Sprint, but had a weird PLMN. I was driving so I couldn't get a screenshot. Not sure if the tower just wasn't set up properly.

Also, another interesting thing. As I was coming down the east side of Afton Mtn, I connected to a Sprint 1x800 site in Mineral, VA. That's like 50 miles away. Again, I couldn't get a screenshot, but that's a long way. I also don't know if it would have held if I tried to make a call, but the signal was somewhere around -95dbm, which isn't terrible.

  8. I'm now going about 16 hours without an unexpected reboot. I did a phone reprovision using ##72786# and it went through the process and the phone has been OK so far. I'll report back later to see if it kept working or not.

  9. New software update. States just security but we'll see. Hopefully fixes some bugs too.

I'm hoping it fixes the restart bug. I just installed it. We'll see what happens.

  10. Factory reset may or may not fix it. If it's a software problem it probably will, but if it's a hardware failure it won't. Mine kept doing it after several factory resets. Pretty much chalked it up to failing hardware somewhere inside the phone. Probably either the internal storage or the ram was starting to fail. The replacement phone I received hasn't shown any of those problems.

Doesn't it seem weird that it's happening to a bunch of people after a software update? It would seem to me that it's a software issue, not a hardware issue.

My phone has rebooted itself once since I did the factory reset yesterday. I guess I'll keep using it for awhile to see how it goes. I hate to have to pay for a replacement device. I don't have TEP so someone earlier said it would be $75. I could probably also use my 3rd party warranty, but the replacement cost through them would be even more.

  11. If anyone is still having issues with random reboots, I seemed to have fixed the problem with a factory reset. I finally had the time to do it this evening and my phone has not rebooted once since. Yesterday, my phone rebooted around 10 times at random times and I finally had enough of it. I'll post back if I start having problems again, but hopefully that fixed the problem for good.

  12. It'll be interesting to hear what they say at their next earnings call about their B41 deployment. So far I haven't seen any in Shenandoah Co (VA), but the last I read, there wasn't any available spectrum here. Hopefully that changes with the ntelos deal, because in the towns, especially Woodstock and Strasburg, speeds slow down a good bit during peak times, even with 20 Mhz of spectrum already deployed on most towers in the more populated areas (15 Mhz total B25 and 5 Mhz B26).

  13. Anyone having issues where the signal bars will go back/forth no signal and correct signal? It isn't losing signal because signal check is showing data.

I've seen it happen a couple times, but I'm not too worried about it since it's not affecting anything.
