  1. Just bought my son the nexus 5 on amazon $35. So from what I have read it won't come with a Sim card or have I misunderstood?

Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk

it will most likely not come with a sim card.  if you need me to mail one out to you, hit me up in PM.  You may want to see if your local stores have any 3ff sims in stock.  i can probably get a spare out to you faster than worldchat

  2. FORGIVE ANY LATE RESPONSES. sorry about the caps lock lol (been off for several days (if 6 counts as several. 600+ notifications)

10% ABV...pffft.  I'll take shots of Kraken or Sailor Jerry thank you.  Oh and a digibrew chaser please.

chasers? real men need no chasers. maybe you should just drink disaranno straight or with some ice. (28% abv)

I assume you're using the new (4.4.1) radio?  Curious about other people's experience on 4.4.2.  I've thus far not taken the time to sideload it (from 4.4), and haven't gotten an OTA yet.

my experience has been similar to the stock 4.4 radio. i sideloaded 4.4.1, and ota'd to 4.4.2.  unfortunately my area has had a lot of work being done so MMMV.  i had a few more radio issues on both 4.4.2 and 4.4.1 then on 4.4 but they seem to be slowly resolving themselves. now if only the 3 closet towers to me would work out their issues.  I have an ingress portal that i setup 500 feet from my house but the signal is abysmal and takes 10 mins to get any data connection (even 3g) regardless of restarts, airplane mode, etc

From what I read hear it appears that Google Voice is the way to go for now (there still seems to be issues with notifications).  I have used Google Voice for voice mail since the original Droid and have not looked back.

depending on your signal strength (or not) i have always found gvoice to get texts even before the hangouts app or any other sms program.  Currently using hangouts and gvoice concurrently until all of the issues get worked out

  3. I already unlocked the bootloader and rooted a month ago.  That required enough convoluted instructions.  Once was enough for me.  I do not want to have to do that again and again with every update.  And I do not even know what this TWRP thing is, anyway.

All of this seems just a hassle.  I miss the days when handset hardware and firmware went hand in hand, etched in stone.  There were no firmware updates.  So, with any handset, you had to "fish or cut bait."

Well you didn't necessarily have to do all of that to begin with for a few extra tweaks.  If you were completely stock it is a simple process

    on computer

    - install latest android sdk (if you don't already have it)

    on phone

    - boot into recovery mode (vol up + power key)

    - select update from adb

    - plug phone into computer

    on computer

    - use terminal or command line with the adb sideload filename.zip command

five simple steps, a few minutes of your time.

I'm not trying to say that rooting and putting in a custom recovery doesn't have it own benefits, but for the average user, a custom rom or custom prl isn't really necessary.  At least the Nexus 5 does not suffer from uninstallable bloatware which is a primary reason for rooting on other android devices.  I've done my fair share of custom recoveries, roms, roots, and various hacks to countless devices.  This phone has been one of the few so far I have not seen the need to do so.

  4. Anyone goy any ideas why when I try to adb sideload i get a message cant read "update.zip". The device shows up when I do a adb devices with serial number. When I go into recovery it ask for the file when I type the name in command it says cant read said file.

You might want to try redownloading the file, as it may be corrupt.

Are you making sure to put your phone in "update from adb" when in recovery mode before plugging it into the computer and using the adb sideload filename.zip command in the terminal/command line?

Also, are you using the latest Android SDK?

  5. Went to sprint yesterday to look at it myself and all I could do was laugh when I saw how ridiculously large this device really is in person.  Anyway, can't wait until I get to try it out on a daily basis.

Did you also take a look at the Galaxy Mega?  Now that's a beast in size... Just looked at one myself today

  6. Mine has been in a Otterbox defender case so nothing touches the screen plus it nothing else is in my front pocket except my phone.  All depends on how you use your phone.

I had to order another case because the heavy duty one negated my wireless charging capabilities.  Ended up buying a yellow bumper case to make this nexus 5 a sprint classic

  7. I smoke, but not marlboros. and they send me free crap and coupons all the time.

Usually they have little ciggy stripers (candystripers?) that go around at bars, clubs and other places adults congregate and get you to sign up for free samples and will give you a pack of cigarettes. hmm

  8. OK Google only works when on the home screen with the display on.  It is not the same as the Moto X version where it will work whenever.  Are you having a problem when the home screen is on?

that's too bad really. it would be nice to have it listening at all times like the moto x, especially since kitkat seems to implicitly support the feature

in 5 hours the phone battery lost 17%. is that normal? I checked my email once and the time twice that's it.LTE was on all the time

multiple theories abound about bugs with google play services, but most of them were resolved within a week.  I am under the impression that play services will eat up a significant portion of the battery in the first few days of device use while it synchronizes all of your account settings on the device.

  9. According to Sprint, the G2 also lacks wifi capability. According to best buy, it has a micro SD slot. I am pretty sure according to the FBI, the G2 is also responsible for the Kennedy assassination, too.

It depends on what "G2" we are referring to. Might be true militarily speaking

This OK Google thing is pretty awesome I might add.

I'm having issues with "ok google" myself.  i thought it should work at any and all times. am i missing a setting or option to enable?

I have to geek out! My black 32 finally shipped! Now I just gotta get a sim. Sprint hasn't shipped the sims that I ordered on the 5th also.

you still havent received a sim? i put my order in on the 7th and received it on the 9th/10th.  how did you order it? i did my through international chat.

They told me they didn't have it and need to call tech support.

have you tried international chat? http://sprintworldwide.custhelp.com/app/chat/chat_launch

Didn't you get a tracking number? That should show you. In any case, the ground maps on UPS.com show 4 days to all of California. No clue if I just got lucky or if this is the norm with these shipments, but my 2nd Day Air shipment was delivered in one day.. only took 8 hours to get to my local hub in MA. UPS handles Google's logistics themselves, so maybe that extra head start from the very beginning might shave a day off for you.

    -Mike

my 2 day air shipment was delivered in 1 day from the shipping notification.  seems that the underpromise, overdeliver is in full effect.

  10. This is very true.

Everyone should keep in mind that -- while we believe S4GRU to be an accomplished site -- it is not influential enough to be sampled review handsets.  We have to analyze publicly released FCC docs and purchase review handsets on the open market.  If we had the financial wherewithal to acquire 10 or so current handsets and test them simultaneously on active lines, we would.  But that is outside the current realm of possibilities.  So, take our FCC OET handset info as sources of education, not means for definitive conclusions.

    AJ

Fingers crossed, handsets should be reveiewed through this site (at least for Sprint Phones) before any other.  I hope you are reading Dan/Masa...

on that note, perhaps we can have a handset review donation section started.
