  1. Not exactly...

with the 12.2 AMR vocoder used, VoLTE is about 1.7x as efficient as 1xRTT.

1xAdvanced WITHOUT receive diversity in the handset is 3x as efficient as 1xRTT (according to Qualcomm)

1xAdvanced WITH receive diversity in the handset is 4x as efficient as 1xRTT (according to Qualcomm)

Doing the math, this means that 1xA is 76% - 135% MORE efficient than VoLTE with current vocoders.

However, this analysis assumes a 1.4 or 3 MHz LTE carrier, which aren't as efficient as 1x or EVDO. Only at a 5x5 or larger configuration can LTE meet or beat 1x / EVDO spectral efficiency at a UE category 3 design.

Thanks for the explanation there. Is 1xA still efficient in small MHz sections if Sprint wanted to take 10 or 20 MHz from their other PCS block holdings and convert those to LTE later?

  2. For a pre paid provider to offer roaming it would raise the price of service for that provider and wouldn't be worth having when you can have a decent phone subsidized for 2 years and pay a little bit more per month. Prepaid mobile is for the budget conscience person. Some prepaid carriers have been able to negotiate cheap roaming agreements, but not many have.

  3. Are they going to charge for using this service? I remember them trying to charge me $10 per month for SDC on my Renegade and I didn't use it enough to make it worth it then. Now there are free alternatives out there. Makes it a lot more difficult to convince people to pay for it. They would have to add something.

That's a good question. I really don't know the answer to that. I guess we will find out come next month. This release coincides with the release of International Direct Connect over CDMA.

The free ptt apps have the ability to use the volume button or camera button all you have to do is map whatever you want to use in the settings. I was thinking a ptt button would differentiate the app from just any other app. It would give sprint the appearance that they have something different and exclusive. I would like to see them propose an additional button to apple though LMAO

A ptt button on an iPhone? I can't see that happening anytime in the future, lol.

  4. Along with Unl. Data, this could be an additional differentiator to keep Sprint apart from the pack if every phone or a select class had this capability. Unfourtunately, I think Sprint will let this wither and die. I don't see them doing anything in this segment to make it flourish.

For Sprint to be working on releasing the Android app, I see them supporting Direct Connect for the foreseeable future.

  5. It would be nice if they could talk handset makers into adding a ptt button which could double as a camera button

How about firmware updates to make the volume buttons reprogrammable for use with ptt? I could see that working.

  6. I'm sorry if I'm upset, and it's not just from an investment view. I'm upset as a Sprint customer this man is trying to put Sprint into a category that they shouldn't fall in. They are doing everything they can to survive in the wireless wars, but his partiality is to another carrier, and he must be bitter that at&t didn't buy T-Mobile, so he's downplaying Sprint to eliminate them from the Battle of the Carriers.

  7. As was previously displayed in last October's Sprint NV conference slides, the Android app for Sprint Direct Connect is slated for launch next month on the Samsung Transform Ultra. How soon it will launch to other Android smartphones in Sprint's existing lineup remains a mystery, but we can be for certain that because it runs on Qualcomm's QChat, that may be sooner than later. And according to the phonenews.com article, QChat is platform agnostic, giving Sprint the ability to launch Direct Connect onto Windows Phone, Blackberry, and even iOS.

Here's to the beginning of the soon to be quick end of iDEN.

  8. You're in for the long haul now huh? If they can make it through NV, I think your investment is sound.

They will make it through NV. It's hoping that Clearwire makes it through their LTE upgrades. Of course, now with NetZero launching their own 4G network using Clearwire's WiMax, I think they will have a fighting chance. I'm just hoping that Clearwire will eventually expand after they upgrade to LTE.

  9. On one hand, you hear people ask how they can get people off 3G and onto 4G for increased efficiency and reduced operating cost. Then this clown says that moving iPhone traffic onto 4G will be traumatic for Sprint...

Isn't the whole goal of NV to offload as many people as possible to the LTE 4G network? I sure thought so with VoLTE being developed and trialed around the US and the World. Isn't VoLTE a more efficient use for spectrum?
