    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Monday, April 2, 2012 - 1:00 AM MDT

Oh my friends in Milwaukee, you have been so patient. Well, most of you. Especially my pal, Frank! It seems like I am harassed every day by someone in Beer City USA. Some of S4GRU's most loyal fans hail from Milwaukee. We are very happy to provide you an update. For you and your fellow Great Lakes neighbors in Cleveland.

As most of you who are reading this article know, Sprint 4G Rollout Updates has released the list of First and Second Round markets that Sprint is focusing on in the first half of Network Vision and LTE Deployment. Last Friday, we also brought you a story how it appears that Phoenix and Tucson appear to be moving up the schedule. We can report the same thing appears to be happening with Milwaukee and Cleveland.

Officially, Milwaukee and Cleveland are in the Third Round. However, S4GRU.com can reveal to you that the dates for RF Design and backhaul dates for these two markets are significantly earlier than other 3rd Round markets. Additionally, in a Network Vision schedule update S4GRU obtained a few weeks ago, both the Milwaukee and Cleveland markets engineering schedules moved up from previous schedules. And are now the same as Phoenix and Tucson.

Now with the latest schedule updates, the Milwaukee and Cleveland markets engineering and design are only 30 days later than what is shown for the last 2nd Round markets. Whereas 3rd Round markets are typically 4 to 5 months later. However, even with the improved dates, Samsung still shows these two markets being in the 3rd Round.

Are these markets being moved up to the Second Round? Will they be in a no man's land schedule wise between the 2nd and 3rd round with Phoenix and Tucson? We cannot say with certainty at this time.

It appears that something is afoot. We will continue to monitor schedule progress and let all of you know of any more changes that occur with Milwaukee and Cleveland. If I were a betting man, I would wager that you will start seeing sites come live before the end of the 2nd Round.

Sprint 4G Rollout Updates also recently seen some new documents at the end of last week that could provide a little hope for two additional markets. We are reviewing the details more thoroughly and may have an article about it soon. Then, the market announcements will stop for awhile. I can't think of why we would announce 3rd Round markets so early. There is way too much variability to what can happen with their schedules. We may repeat this exercise again with 3rd and 4th Round markets later in the year.

    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Thursday, July 12, 2012 - 6:55 AM MDT

The next market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is...Oregon/SW Washington. The Oregon market has yet to be announced by Sprint, and may not be announced until as late as this Fall.

The Sprint Oregon/SW Washington market covers the State of Oregon and the part of Washington in the Portland Metro Area and along the Columbia River. This includes Portland, Salem, Eugene/Springfield, Bend, Corvallis, Astoria, Medford, Grants Pass and Klamath Falls in Oregon and Vancouver, Battle Ground, Kelso and Longview in Washington State. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Samsung is scheduled to begin mobilizing their subcontractors around the market in October. The first completed Network Vision sites are scheduled to start coming online before the end of that month.

Anticipated Sites Complete at Market Launch. According to the Network Vision schedules that S4GRU has reviewed, if Sprint launched the market in June, these are the anticipated sites that would likely have LTE complete at that time. This would provide fairly good LTE coverage over many parts of the market.

Schedule details and the bottom line

Sprint has not yet selected a date to formally "launch" LTE service in Oregon. It is difficult to try to pick a date now this far out, but we have attempted to do that. In looking at the schedule as of today, it would indicate a June market launch (going on a 40% - 50% completion for launch). But there is no way to know if Samsung and their subcontractors will actually hit their schedule dates before deployment in this market begins. We will be able to gauge better after a few months of production is achieved.

Samsung needs to hit a production rate of approximately 45 sites per month to stay on schedule. This is a normal production rate when compared to other markets. They shouldn't have any schedule issues with the appropriate amount of resources allocated.

S4GRU has examined the schedule in great detail in this market and sees that most of the sites will be complete by September 2013. However, there may be a few sporadic sites that will linger past the completion.

The next market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is...Long Island. Which I like to pronounce Lawn Guy-land. But I digress...the Long Island market has yet to be announced by Sprint, and may not be announced until as late as this Fall.

The Sprint Long Island market encompasses Nassau and Suffolk counties. This includes the cities of Hempstead, Levittown, Garden City, West Babylon, Freeport, Hicksville, Valley Stream, Islip, Long Beach, Huntington Station, Massapequa, Happaugue, the Hamptons and Montauk. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Alcatel/Lucent is scheduled to begin mobilizing their subcontractors around the market in November. The first completed Network Vision sites are scheduled to start coming online in December.

Anticipated Sites Complete at Market Launch. According to the Network Vision schedules that S4GRU has reviewed, if Sprint launched the market in May, these are the anticipated sites that would likely have LTE complete at that time. This would provide fairly good LTE coverage over many parts of the market.

Schedule details and the bottom line

Sprint has not yet selected a date to formally "launch" LTE service in Long Island. It is difficult to try to pick a date now this far out, but we will try. In looking at the schedule as of today, it would indicate a May market launch (going on a 40% - 50% completion for launch). But there is no way to know if AlcaLu and their subcontractors will actually hit their schedule dates this early in the deployment for this market. We will be able to gauge better after a few months of production.

Alcatel/Lucent needs to hit a production rate of only 25 sites per month to stay on schedule. This is a pretty low amount compared to many markets. There is no reason why they should not be able to complete the market on time, and there is a good chance that they may even be able to get ahead of schedule.

S4GRU has examined the schedule in great detail in this market and sees that most of the sites will be complete by September 2013. However, there may be a few sporadic sites that will linger past the completion.

    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates

The next market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is...Southern Connecticut. The Southern Connecticut market has yet to be announced by Sprint, and may not be announced until as late as this Fall.

The Sprint Southern Connecticut market encompasses Fairfield, New Haven and Litchfield counties. This includes the cities of Bridgeport, New Haven, Stamford, Norwalk, Greenwich, Danbury, Hamden, Trumbull, Waterbury, Meriden and Torrington. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Alcatel/Lucent is scheduled to begin mobilizing their subcontractors around the market in September. The first completed Network Vision sites are scheduled to start coming online in October.

Anticipated Sites Complete at Market Launch. According to the Network Vision schedules that S4GRU has reviewed, if Sprint launched the market in January, these are the anticipated sites that would likely have LTE complete at that time. This would provide fairly good LTE coverage over many parts of the market.

Schedule details and the bottom line

Sprint has not selected a date to formally "launch" LTE service in Southern Connecticut, yet. It is difficult to try to pick a date now this far out, but we will try. In looking at the schedule as of today, it would indicate a January - February market launch (going on a 40% - 50% completion for launch). But there is no way to know if AlcaLu and their subcontractors will actually hit their schedule dates this early in the deployment for this market. We will be able to gauge better after a few months of production.

Alcatel/Lucent needs to hit a production rate of only 25 sites per month to stay on schedule. This is a really low amount compared to most other markets. There is no reason why they should not be able to complete the market on time, and there is a good chance that they may even be able to get ahead of scheule.

    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Monday, July 9, 2012 - 12:01 PM MDT

The next market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is...East Michigan. The East Michigan market has yet to be announced by Sprint, and may not be announced until as late as this Fall.

The Sprint East Michigan market encompasses the Eastern Half of the Michigan Lower Peninsula. This includes the cities of Detroit, Warren, Sterling Heights, Ann Arbor, Flint, Dearborn, Livonia, Canton, Troy, Southfield, Rochester Hills, St. Clair Shores, Pontiac, Tri-Cities (Saginaw, Midland and Bay City), Jackson, Port Huron and Alpena. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Samsung is scheduled to begin mobilizing their subcontractors around the market in September. The first completed Network Vision sites are scheduled to start coming online in October.

Anticipated Sites Complete at Market Launch. According to the Network Vision schedules that S4GRU has reviewed, if Sprint launched the market in April, these are the anticipated sites that would likely have LTE complete at that time. This would provide fairly good LTE coverage over many parts of the market.

Schedule details and the bottom line

Sprint has not yet selected a date to formally "launch" LTE service in East Michigan. It is difficult to try to pick a date now this far out, but we have attempted to do that. In looking at the schedule as of today, it would indicate a April market launch (going on a 40% - 50% completion for launch). But there is no way to know if Samsung and their subcontractors will actually hit their schedule dates before deployment in this market begins. We will be able to gauge better after a few months of production is achieved.

Samsung needs to hit a production rate of approximately 60 sites per month to stay on schedule. This is a big chunk to complete monthly, but is doable with the appropriate amount of resources allocated.

S4GRU has examined the schedule in great detail in this market and sees that most of the sites will be complete by September 2013. However, there may be a few sporadic sites that will linger past the completion.

    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Monday, June 25, 2012 - 7:15 AM MDT

The next market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is a place where things are just starting to get hopping...Miami and South Florida. This is the first Second Round market we have written up in this article series. The Miami/West Palm market has yet to be announced by Sprint, but is expected to be announced in the near future. Perhaps around the time of the first market launches.

The Sprint Miami/West Palm market covers basically all of South Florida, from West Palm Beach to Key West. Dade, Broward, Monroe and West Palm counties. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Ericsson began mobilizing in this area with its subcontractors in May and has been actively working throughout June thus far. To date, there are no completed and active Network Vision sites in the market, but there should be pretty soon.

Network Vision work in Miami/West Palm market. A site receiving Network Vision overhaul in Homestead, Florida in June 2012. Photos courtesy of S4GRU Member flycuban.

    Market Launch and Remaining Schedule

It was Sprint's original plan to launch markets when they reached 50% of sites converted to Network Vision. However, it has now been determined that Sprint will move up launches sooner than 50% completion in several markets. This is likely to maintain a Mid 2012 launch in markets that have already been announced. However, in an unannounced market like Miami, we don't know if they will resume pushing back market launches to 50%, or if they will now settle on a 40% completion to be the new normal for market launches.

If Sprint waits for 50% completion to launch the Miami/West Palm market, it would make the launch month to be November (should Ericsson stay on schedule). If they plan on a 40% market completion for launch, that would be October. You may think that 40% - 50% site completion is not enough to launch LTE service, but it would provide pretty good coverage. Even Verizon doesn't launch on all sites in a market initially. Usually less than 50%, then filling in with more and more sites every few months.

Anticipated Sites Complete at Market Launch. According to the Network Vision schedules that S4GRU has reviewed, if Sprint launched the market in October, these are the anticipated sites that would likely have LTE complete at that time. This would provide fairly good LTE coverage over many parts of the market.

    The bottom line...

We currently do not have a date that Sprint will formally "launch" the Miami/West Palm market. It is really hard to call at this point, but the schedule as of today would indicate an October or November market launch (going on a 40% - 50% completion for launch). But there is no way to know if Ericsson and their subcontractors will actually hit their schedule dates this early in the deployment for this market. We will be able to gauge better after a few months of production.

Ericsson will only need to hit a production rate of 65 sites per month to stay on schedule. This seems like a reasonable rate, compared with how some other Ericsson markets are going along. The Atlanta/Athens market has hit rates beyond this. And the Chicago market has been able to hit 50 sites in a week at times, but that market is being handled by Samsung and a different subcontractor base.

S4GRU has examined the schedule in great detail in this market and sees that most of the sites will be complete by February 2013. However, there may be a few sporadic sites that will linger past the completion.

    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Wednesday, June 20, 2012 - 6:00 AM MDT

Chicago. Network Vision is nearly infamous among Chicagoans. Chicago has not been an easy market for Sprint so far. We reported in a previous article about some of the challenges Sprint has faced in its Windy City deployment. Even though this market has yet to be announced by Sprint, we are happy to report to you that Chicago appears to be on track for a September launch.

The Sprint Chicago market covers most of Northern Illinois and the adjacent suburbs of NW Indiana. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Samsung has been actively deploying in the Chicago market since December and is making good progress. As of this week, there are over 300 Network Vision sites that have completed upgrades. These sites are located throughout the market. But all outside the Loop.

Network Vision Sites in the Chicago market. More than 300 Network Vision sites are complete in the market.

However, in an unannounced market like Chicago, we don't know if they will resume pushing back market launches to 50%, or if they will now settle on a 30% - 40% completion to be the new normal for market launches.

If Sprint waits for 50% completion to launch the Chicago market, September would be the launch month should Samsung stay on schedule. It is believed that Sprint will launch the market earlier, with less than 50% coverage. This doesn't sound like enough, but it would provide pretty good coverage. Even Verizon doesn't launch on all sites in a market initially. Usually less than 50%, then filling in with more and more sites every few months.

Anticipated Sites Complete at Market Launch. According to the Network Vision schedules that S4GRU has reviewed, if Sprint launched the market in September, these are the anticipated sites that would likely have LTE complete at that time. This would provide fairly good LTE coverage over many parts of the market.

Sprint is not reporting any of these live Network Vision sites in the Chicago market as currently broadcasting 4G LTE, only 3G EVDO. According to the NV schedule, these should have started coming online in May with LTE. However, none have shown up as LTE active to date. This most likely means that either the backhaul is not quite ready to service 4G LTE, or the 4G cores that these sites are tied to are not quite ready for LTE traffic. A huge backlog of LTE sites will probably come online in this market suddenly when the network is ready.

We are getting reports though of S4GRU members in the Chicago area, especially in the Merrillville and Hammond areas, who have been able to connect to 4G LTE for brief intermittent periods. So there are sites that are starting to get LTE capabilities working. They just have not been turned over to Sprint yet from Samsung.

    The bottom line...

We currently do not have the formal "launch" date for the Chicago market. We believe they are targeting a launch month of September based on reports internally within Sprint. After reviewing the schedule, we can see a path to get there. Sprint will likely announce a launch date for this market, and a few others like Austin, Boston, Washington DC and Los Angeles around the time of the first launch.

Sprint's schedule for this market currently has 307 Network Vision sites complete, which is almost one third. Samsung is progressing very well. It appears that Sprint and Samsung are speeding up the schedule, as it looks like they are now ahead of schedule in this market.

S4GRU has examined the schedule in great detail in this market and sees that most of the sites will be complete by December 2012. However, there are a few sites that will likely linger past the completion. In our estimation of the schedule, Samsung should have no issues meeting Sprint's schedule completion date.

    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Friday, March 8, 2012 - 5:01 AM MST

Ready for some more announcements? We are now prepared to tell you about two more Round Two markets in Sprint's Network Vision/LTE deployment plans for 2012. Philadelphia and Southern Connecticut! The Sprint Philadelphia Metro market includes most of Southeast Pennsylvania and the Southern Connecticut market is the whole western third, and southwestern corner of the state.

Sprint's Network Vision vendor Alcatel/Lucent will likely begin Network Vision and LTE deployment in these two Sprint markets in 2012. This is not an imminent start in the next few weeks. These are Second Round starts. Which means that the start of these markets is dependent on when the previous market before it wraps up. There is no way to determine at this point which markets will precede them. Even Sprint does not know definitively at this point.

    Sprint's Philadelphia Metro market

Sprint's Philadelphia Metro market basically includes every Sprint site in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Including the cities of Philadelphia, all the Philly Suburbs within Pennsylvania, Reading/Berkshire County and the Lehigh Valley (Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton). It is bordered by the already announced Central Jersey market to east. The Delaware market is to the south, the South Jersey market is across the Delaware River to the southeast and the Central Pennsylvania market borders to the north. These three markets are yet to be announced. The Philadelphia Metro market will have 621 sites in total after Network Vision is complete.

Sprint's Philadelphia Metro Market. All 620+ Network Vision sites are shown for the Philadelphia market in this map. Click on image to enlarge.

    Sprint's Southern Connecticut market

Sprint's Southern Connecticut market is the whole southwestern portion of Connecticut, and rural Western Connecticut, outside the Hartford metro. It includes New Haven, Meriden, Waterbury, Danbury, Torrington, Bridgeport, Norwalk, Stamford and Greenwich. It is bordered by the already announced Boston market to the north and the NYC market to the west. And the yet to be announced Northern Connecticut market to the east. A total of 259 Network Vision sites.

Sprint's Southern Connecticut Market. All of the approximately 250+ Network Vision sites are shown for the S. Conn. market in this map. Click on image to enlarge.

We would love to give you the date, but...

There is absolutely no way for S4GRU to be able to provide a start date for these markets, or any of the Second Round 2012 markets that will be announced after these. We are announcing these markets to you for your information, to give Sprint customers a rough idea of when these second round markets can be anticipated.

There is absolutely no guarantee of the order in which these markets come live, because there is a lot of variability in the plan. The most significant variable being how quickly the preceding market before it wraps up. If things go quickly in the preceding market, work may start early. Things go late, these would likely start late. And to complicate start dates in each market, Sprint has said they may elect to slow down Network Vision in future quarters if cash flow becomes strained.

Sprint has three different OEM vendors, with several different crews in many markets at once. There could be final permitting and design delays, some vendors and/or crews will work at different speeds, weather issues and any number of unforeseen circumstances to complicate matters even further. First round market starts are much easier to predict, but second round and third round markets starts are increasingly difficult to predict and put dates to. This is likely the reason why Sprint has elected not to announce these markets themselves at this time. But we know you don't want to wait for Sprint to tell you! With these caveats understood, we are releasing the Network Vision second round markets in the order that they are anticipating to start deployment, based on the schedules as they exist to date.

We won't stop digging for you!

Sprint 4G Rollout Updates will continue to scour through the data and gather deployment information for your use. It is our intent to provide at a minimum, all the Sprint markets that will likely begin Network Vision/LTE upgrades in 2012. And we intend to do so in a series of articles over the next few weeks. We will not likely announce communities slated for 2013, because the dates we hold for 2013 markets appear very tentative and subject to change. With the many variables to sort out between now and 2013. Sprint could make significant shifts in deployment plans based on dynamic need change, funding, market permitting difficulties, etc.

With the release of Philadelphia and Southern Connecticut markets today, that brings the total of Network Vision markets announced to 23. We have have a thread in our forums where we are keeping track of all the markets announced by Sprint and S4GRU.com. Click on this link here to view the Network Vision Market Running List.

Stay tuned to Sprint 4G Rollout Updates. Tonight we will be having a special announcement of a Samsung market. And on Monday we will be releasing the next two Round Two markets for Sprint Network Vision and LTE deployment. We will be talking about it in a few hours in advance in a S4GRU Live Chat at 9:30 PM Mountain Time on Sunday evening. Come join us!

    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Tuesday, July 31, 2012 - 7:35 AM MDT

The final market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is...Fort Wayne/South Bend. This market has yet to be announced by Sprint, and may not be announced until as late as this Fall.

The Sprint Ft. Wayne/South Bend market covers most of Northern Indiana, except for the NW corner which is in the Chicago market. This includes Fort Wayne, South Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart, Goshen, Marion, Logansport, Warsaw and Plymouth. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Samsung is scheduled to begin mobilizing their subcontractors around the market in November. The first completed Network Vision sites are scheduled to start coming online before the end of that month.

Anticipated Sites Complete at Market Launch. According to the Network Vision schedules that S4GRU has reviewed, if Sprint launched the market in February, these are the anticipated sites that would likely have LTE complete at that time. This would provide fairly good LTE coverage over many parts of the market.

Schedule details and the bottom line

Sprint has not yet selected a date to formally "launch" LTE service in Northern Indiana. It is difficult to try to pick a date now this far out, but we have attempted to do that. In looking at the schedule as of today, it would indicate a February market launch (going on a 40% - 50% completion for launch). But there is no way to know if Samsung and their subcontractors will actually hit their schedule dates before deployment in this market begins. We will be able to gauge better after a few months of production is achieved.

Samsung needs to hit a production rate of approximately 25 sites per month to stay on schedule. This is a below normal production rate when compared to other markets. They shouldn't have any schedule issues with the appropriate amount of resources allocated.

S4GRU has examined the schedule in great detail in this market and sees that most of the sites will be complete by April 2013. However, there may be a few sporadic sites that will linger past the completion.

    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Wednesday, June 27, 2012 - 12:59 PM MDT

The next market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is...South West Florida. South West Florida has yet to be announced by Sprint, but is expected to be announced in the near future. Perhaps around the time of the first market launches.

The Sprint South West Florida market encompasses all of the Sprint native coverage in Manatee, Sarasota, Lee and Collier counties. Including the Sarasota/Bradenton area, Port Charlotte/Punta Gorda, Ft. Myers/Cape Coral, Bonita Springs and Naples. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Ericsson is scheduled to begin mobilizing with its subcontractors in early August. Completed Network Vision sites should start coming online before the end of September.

has reviewed, if Sprint launched the market in Mid November, these are the anticipated sites that would likely

have LTE complete at that time. This would provide fairly good LTE coverage over many parts of the market.

Schedule details and the bottom line

We currently do not have a date that Sprint will formally "launch" LTE service in South West Florida. It is difficult to try to pick a date now this far out, but we will take a stab at it. In looking at the schedule as of today, it would indicate a November or December market launch (going on a 40% - 50% completion for launch). But there is no way to know if Ericsson and their subcontractors will actually hit their schedule dates this early in the deployment for this market. We will be able to gauge better after a few months of production.

Ericsson will only need to hit a production rate of 30 sites per month to stay on schedule. This is a pretty low rate and should be able to be achieved. If properly prepared and equipped and if backhaul is ready timely, this market shouldn't have problems staying on time. But time makes fools of us all!

S4GRU has examined the schedule in great detail in this market and sees that most of the sites will be complete by March 2013. However, there may be a few sporadic sites that will linger past the completion.

    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Monday, July 2, 2012 - 12:30 PM MDT

The next market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is ...San Diego. The San Diego market has yet to be announced by Sprint, but is expected to be announced in the near future. Perhaps around the time of the first market launches.

The Sprint San Diego market encompasses San Diego County and parts of Imperial County, including the San Diego Metro Area, Encinitas, Carlsbad, Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, Escondido and Calexico and El Centro to the East. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Alcatel/Lucent is scheduled to begin mobilizing their subcontractors around the market this month. The first completed Network Vision sites are scheduled to start coming online in August.

    San Diego Market Launch

It was Sprint's original plan to launch markets when they reached 50% of sites converted to Network Vision. However, it has now been determined that Sprint will move up launches sooner than 50% completion in several markets. This is likely to maintain a Mid 2012 launch in markets that have already been announced. However, in an unannounced market like San Diego, we don't know if they will resume pushing back market launches to 50%, or if they will now settle on a 40% completion to be the new normal for market launches.

If Sprint waits for 50% completion to launch this market, it would make the launch approximately February/March (should the OEM stay on schedule). If they plan on a 40% market completion for launch, that would be January.

According to the Network Vision schedules that S4GRU has reviewed, if Sprint launched the market in January, these are the anticipated sites that would likely have LTE complete at that time. This would provide fairly good LTE coverage over many parts of the market.

Schedule details and the bottom line

Sprint has not selected a date to formally "launch" LTE service in San Diego, yet. It is difficult to try to pick a date now this far out, but we will take a stab at it. In looking at the schedule as of today, it would indicate a January market launch (going on a 40% - 50% completion for launch). But there is no way to know if AlcaLu and their subcontractors will actually hit their schedule dates this early in the deployment for this market. We will be able to gauge better after a few months of production.

Alcatel/Lucent needs to hit a production rate of approximately 70 sites per month to stay on schedule. This market shouldn't have problems staying on time as 70 sites per month is a steady rate that can be achieved with proper planning.

S4GRU has examined the schedule in great detail in this market and sees that most of the sites will be complete by May 2013. However, there may be a few sporadic sites that will linger past the completion.

    Tuesday, July 10, 2012 - 11:56 AM MDT

The next market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is...Riverside/San Bernardino, otherwise known as the Inland Empire. The Riverside/San Bernardino market has yet to be announced by Sprint, and may not be announced until as late as this Fall.

The Sprint Riverside/San Bernardino market includes Riverside, San Bernardino, Ontario, Fontana, Moreno Valley, Rancho Cucamonga, Victorville/Hesperia, Murrieta, Temecula, Rialto, Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead, Barstow, Twentynine Palms, Palm Springs and Indio. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Alcatel/Lucent is scheduled to begin mobilizing their subcontractors around the market in November. The first completed Network Vision sites are scheduled to start coming online in December.

    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Thursday, June 28, 2012 - 12:59 PM MDT

The next market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is The Music City...Nashville. The Nashville market has yet to be announced by Sprint, but is expected to be announced in the near future. Perhaps around the time of the first market launches on July 15th?

The Sprint Nashville market encompasses all of the Sprint native coverage in eastern Tennessee, and the Tri-Cities area of Western Virginia. This includes the Nashville, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Clarksville and the Tri-Cities (Johnson City/Kingsport/Bristol). Sprint's Network Vision OEM Ericsson is scheduled to begin mobilizing in this area with its subcontractors in late July. Completed Network Vision sites should start coming online before the end of August.

    Nashville Market Launch

It was Sprint's original plan to launch markets when they reached 50% of sites converted to Network Vision. According to the Network Vision schedules that S4GRU has reviewed, if Sprint launched the market in November, these are the anticipated sites that would likely have LTE complete at that time. This would provide fairly good LTE coverage over many parts of the market. Some sites are scheduled to be live in the Tri-Cities at the time. However, Chattanooga and Knoxville sites won't start until early 2013.

Schedule details and the bottom line

We currently do not have a date that Sprint will formally "launch" the Nashville market. It is difficult to try to pick a date now this far out. And we know Sprint won't want to do that. We will be able to gauge better after a few months of production.

Ericsson will need to hit a production rate of 85 sites per month to stay on schedule. This will be a difficult rate to achieve and maintain consistently. Guessing now and based on the best production rates thus far, I could see this market taking longer to complete. Since they should be starting soon, we will be able to understand how things are going in a few months.

S4GRU has examined the schedule in great detail in this market and sees that most of the sites are scheduled to be complete by March 2013. However, there may be a few sporadic sites that will linger past the completion.

This includes the Research Triangle/Raleigh-Durham metro area, Fayetteville/Fort Bragg, Southern Pines/Pinehurst, Rocky Mount, Wilson, Greenville, Kinston and Goldsboro. The next market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is...Charlotte. The Charlotte market has yet to be announced by Sprint, but is expected to be announced in the near future. Perhaps around the time of the first market launches.

The Sprint Charlotte market encompasses all of the Sprint native coverage in western North Carolina. This includes the Charlotte Metro area, Kannapolis, Concord, Salisbury, Gastonia, Hickory, Boone and all the way over to Asheville. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Alcatel/Lucent is scheduled to begin mobilizing in this area with its subcontractors any time now. Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Tuesday, October 16, 2012 - 7:00 AM MDT

Four Sprint markets that were slated to begin Network Vision/LTE deployments in 2013 are beginning early. Good news for Sprint customers in the East Kentucky, Upstate New York East, North LA and Vermont/New Hampshire/Maine Sprint markets.

S4GRU has been able to confirm that Network Vision is now under way in these blessed locations. Three of these markets are being deployed by Alcatel Lucent (Upstate NY East, North LA & VT/NH/ME) and the East Kentucky market is being deployed by Ericsson. In fact, AlcaLu already has completed 3G upgrades in a small handful of sites in these markets, with 4G yet to come. Ericsson is just now beginning in the East Kentucky market and do not quite have any sites complete yet.

We currently do not have detailed schedules for these markets, so we will not be able to offer projected launch dates or completion dates at this time. However, near some of the first to be converted sites, Sprint customers will start to see improved 3G speeds and possibly even some prelaunch LTE signals.

You can join us here at S4GRU and track these depoyments. We have a thread we titled the Network Vision Deployment Running List where you can see a summary of all the Sprint markets currently under deployment. Additionally, we offer even more info where we track the completed sites to date on Interactive Maps in our Sponsor section. Information about sponsorship can be found here: S4GRU Sponsorship

Sprint's East Kentucky Market. Ericsson is starting Network Vision/LTE deployments in the East Kentucky market. Cities that will be a part of this deployment include Lexington, Frankfort, Danville, Somerset, London, Corbin. With only 119 sites, the market may wrap up relatively quickly. Sprint's North LA Market. Alcatel Lucent has begun Network Vision/LTE deployments in the North LA market. The market includes Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. 219 sites total. Click on Map to Enlarge.

Sprint's Upper NY East Market. Alcatel Lucent has begun Network Vision/LTE deployments in the Upper NY East market. The market includes the Albany metro area and Saratoga Springs. 216 sites total. Click on Map to Enlarge.

    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Monday, July 9, 2012 - 6:00 AM MDT

The next market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is...Orange County, California. The Orange County market has yet to be announced by Sprint, and may not be announced until as late as this Fall.

The Sprint Orange County market includes Anaheim, Santa Ana, Irvine, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Orange, Fullerton, Laguna Niguel and Mission Viejo. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Alcatel/Lucent is scheduled to begin mobilizing their subcontractors around the market in September. The first completed Network Vision sites are scheduled to start coming online in October.

Anticipated Sites Complete at Market Launch. According to the Network Vision schedules that S4GRU has reviewed, if Sprint launched the market in April, these are the anticipated sites that would likely have LTE complete at that time. This would provide fairly good LTE coverage over many parts of the market.

Schedule details and the bottom line

Sprint has not selected a date to formally "launch" LTE service in Orange County, yet. It is difficult to try to pick a date now this far out, but we will try. In looking at the schedule as of today, it would indicate a April - May market launch (going on a 40% - 50% completion for launch). We will be able to gauge better after a few months of production.

Alcatel/Lucent needs to hit a production rate of only 35 sites per month to stay on schedule. This is a pretty low amount compared to many markets. There is no reason why they should not be able to complete the market on time, and there is a good chance that they may even be able to get ahead of schedule.

S4GRU has examined the schedule in great detail in this market and sees that most of the sites will be complete by August 2013. However, there may be a few sporadic sites that will linger past the completion.

    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Monday, March 12, 2012 - 3:00 AM MDT

Just itchin' for some more Network Vision announcements? We are now prepared to tell you about two more Round Two markets in Sprint's Network Vision/LTE deployment plans for 2012. San Diego and Northern Jersey! The Sprint San Diego Metro market includes most of San Diego and Imperial Counties and the Northern Jersey market is the whole northern third of the state of New Jersey.

    Sprint's San Diego market

Sprint's San Diego market basically includes every Sprint site at the extreme bottom of California in San Diego and Imperial Counties. Including the cities of San Diego, Oceanside, Vista, Carlsbad, La Jolla. La Mesa, Escondido, San Marcos, National City, Chula Vista, El Cajon, Santee, Calexico and El Centro. It is bordered by the yet to be announced markets of Orange County and Riverside/San Bernardino to the north and Tucson/Yuma to the east. The San Diego market will have 762 sites in total after Network Vision is complete.

Sprint's San Diego Market. All 750+ Network Vision sites are shown for the San Diego market in this map. Click on image to enlarge.

    Sprint's Northern Jersey market

Sprint's Northern Jersey market is the whole top part of New Jersey, including the western NYC suburbs. It includes Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Elizabeth, Parsippany, Paramus, Hackensack, Morristown and Philipsburg. It is bordered by the New York City market to the north and east, Central Pennsylvania to the west and Central Jersey market to the south. A total of 535 Network Vision sites.

Sprint's Northern Jersey Market. All of the approximately 530+ Network Vision sites are shown for the Northern Jersey market in this map.

With the release of San Diego and Northern Jersey markets today, that brings the total of Network Vision markets announced to 25. We have have a thread in our forums where we are keeping track of all the markets announced by Sprint and S4GRU.com. Click on this link here to view the Network Vision Market Running List.

Stay tuned to Sprint 4G Rollout Updates. On Wednesday we will be releasing the next two Round Two markets for Sprint Network Vision and LTE deployment. We will be talking about it in a few hours in advance in a S4GRU Live Chat at 9:30 PM Mountain Time on Tuesday evening. Come join us!

    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Tuesday, June 26, 2012 - 2:40 PM MDT

The next market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is the Bold New City of the South...Jacksonville. Jacksonville and Florida's First Coast has yet to be announced by Sprint, but is expected to be announced in the near future. Perhaps around the time of the first market launches.

The Sprint Jacksonville market encompasses all of the Sprint native coverage in Northeastern Florida and extends down to even parts of the west coast of Central Florida. This includes the Jacksonville Metro area and the Beaches, Orange Park, St. Augustine, Palatka, Gainesville, Ocala, Wildwood and down over toward Crystal River and Homosassa Springs. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Ericsson is scheduled to begin mobilizing with its subcontractors next month. Completed Network Vision sites should start coming online in August.

    Jacksonville Market Launch

It was Sprint's original plan to launch markets when they reached 50% of sites converted to Network Vision. However, it has now been determined that Sprint will move up launches sooner than 50% completion in several markets. This is likely to maintain a Mid 2012 launch in markets that have already been announced. However, in an unannounced market like Jacksonville, we don't know if they will resume pushing back market launches to 50%, or if they will now settle on a 40% completion to be the new normal for market launches.

If Sprint waits for 50% completion to launch the Jacksonville market, it would make the launch month to be November (should the OEM stay on schedule). If they plan on a 40% market completion for launch, that would be October. You may think that 40% - 50% site completion is not enough to launch LTE service, but it would provide pretty good coverage. Even Verizon doesn't launch on all sites in a market initially. Usually less than 50%, then filling in with more and more sites every few months.

sites that would likely have LTE complete at that time. This would provide fairly good LTE

coverage over many parts of the market.

Schedule details and the bottom line

We currently do not have a date that Sprint will formally "launch" LTE service in Northeast Florida. It is difficult to try to pick a date now this far out, but we will take a stab at it. In looking at the schedule as of today, it would indicate an November or December market launch (going on a 40% - 50% completion for launch). But there is no way to know if Ericsson and their subcontractors will actually hit their schedule dates this early in the deployment for this market. We will be able to gauge better after a few months of production.

Ericsson will only need to hit a production rate of 40 sites per month to stay on schedule. This appears to us to be an achievable rate. If properly prepared and equipped and if backhaul is ready timely, this market shouldn't have problems staying on time. But this is easy to say before they get started.

S4GRU has examined the schedule in great detail in this market and sees that most of the sites will be complete by March 2013. However, there may be a few sporadic sites that will linger past the completion.

    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Sunday, July 8, 2012 - 2:30 PM MDT

The next market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is...West Michigan. The West Michigan market has yet to be announced by Sprint, and may not be announced until as late as this Fall.

The Sprint West Michigan market encompasses the Western and Central Portions of the Michigan Lower Peninsula, as well as a few isolated Upper Peninsula sites around St. Ignace, Mackinac Island and Sault Ste. Marie. This includes the cities of Grand Rapids, Lansing, Kalamazoo, Wyoming, Battle Creek, Portage, Muskegon, Holland, Traverse City, Mount Pleasant, Benton Harbor, St. Joseph and Niles. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Samsung is scheduled to begin mobilizing their subcontractors around the market in September. The first completed Network Vision sites are scheduled to start coming online in October.

Anticipated Sites Complete at Market Launch. According to the Network Vision schedules that S4GRU has reviewed, if Sprint launched the market in March, these are the anticipated sites that would likely have LTE complete at that time. This would provide fairly good LTE coverage over many parts of the market. There likely will be more in the Grand Rapids Metro area than what is shown here.

Schedule details and the bottom line

Sprint has not yet selected a date to formally "launch" LTE service in West Michigan. It is difficult to try to pick a date now this far out, but we have attempted to do that. In looking at the schedule as of today, it would indicate a March market launch (going on a 40% - 50% completion for launch). But there is no way to know if Samsung and their subcontractors will actually hit their schedule dates before deployment in this market begins. We will be able to gauge better after a few months of production is achieved.

Samsung needs to hit a production rate of approximately 45 sites per month to stay on schedule. This market shouldn't have problems staying on time as this is a lower production rate than many markets.

S4GRU has examined the schedule in great detail in this market and sees that most of the sites will be complete by August 2013. However, there may be a few sporadic sites that will linger past the completion.

    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Friday, March 16, 2012 - 12:00 AM MDT

Double Sunshine State announcement! We are now prepared to tell you about two more Round Two markets in Sprint's Network Vision/LTE deployment plans for 2012...

    Orlando and Miami/West Palm!

The Sprint Orlando market includes all of East Central Florida from Metro Orlando, down the Atlantic shore from Daytona Beach through the Space Coast down to the Palm Beach County line. The Miami/West Palm market includes all of the Gold Coast and the Keys including Monroe, Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

Sprint's Network Vision vendor Ericsson will likely begin Network Vision and LTE deployment in these two Sprint markets in 2012. This is not an imminent start in the next few weeks. These are Second Round starts. Which means that the start of these markets is dependent on when the previous market before it wraps up. There is no way to determine at this point which markets will precede them. Even Sprint does not know definitively at this point.

    Sprint's Orlando market

Sprint's Orlando market includes all of East Central Florida. Including the cities of Orlando, Daytona Beach, Lakeland, Melbourne, Palm Bay, Vero Beach, Port St. Lucie, Kissimmee, Deltona, Palm Coast, DeLand, Titusville, Cocoa Beach, Lessburg, Clermont, Winter Haven and Sebring. It is bordered by the Tampa market to the west, the Jacksonville market to the north, Southwest Florida market to the southwest and Miami/West Palm market to the south. The Orlando market will have 606 sites in total after Network Vision is complete.

Sprint's Orlando Market. All 600+ Network Vision sites are shown for the Orlando market in this map. Click on image to enlarge.

    Sprint's Miami/West Palm market

Sprint's Miami/West Palm market is all of Southeast Florida and the Keys. It includes Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Miami Beach, Key West, Key Largo, Homestead, Kendall, Coral Gables, Plantation, Coral Springs, Hollywood and Boca Raton. It is bordered by the Orlando market to the north and Southwest Florida to the west. A total of 520 Network Vision sites.

With the release of Orlando and Miami/West Palm markets today, that brings the total of Network Vision markets announced to 30. We have have a thread in our forums where we are keeping track of all the markets announced by Sprint and S4GRU.com. Click on this link here to view the Network Vision Market Running List.

Stay tuned to Sprint 4G Rollout Updates. On Monday we will be releasing the next two Round Two markets for Sprint Network Vision and LTE deployment. We will be talking about it in a few hours in advance in a S4GRU Live Chat at 9:30 PM Mountain Time on Sunday evening. Come join us!

    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Friday, February 24, 2012 - 5:59 AM MST

OK, a pattern is emerging. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning we are releasing the next Network Vision/LTE market Sprint is planning to start deployment during 2012. And today is Friday, so that means we will announce a new market name...

    New York City!

Yes, the Big Apple. Sprint's Network Vision vendor Alcatel/Lucent will begin to deploy its Hail Mary Network Vision and LTE in the Sprint NYC market. We are announcing the Sprint markets that will receive NV/LTE in 2012 roughly in order. There is absolutely no guarantee of the order in which these markets come live, because there is a lot of variability in the plan.

Three different vendors, with several different crews in several markets at once. There could be final permitting and design delays, some vendors and/or crews will work at different speeds, weather issues and any number of unforeseen circumstances. First round market starts are much easier to predict, but second round and third round markets starts are predicated on the timing of the previous market wrap up preceding it. This is likely the reason why Sprint has elected not to announce these markets themselves at this time.

With these caveats understood, we are releasing the Network Vision markets in the order that they anticipate to start deployment. For Alcatel/Lucent, Baltimore and Boston will start first. DC, NYC and the market to be announced on Monday may start after those wrap up. There could be some overlap if A/L has the manpower to execute them sooner, given that the design work and permitting associated with all 5 markets is largely complete.

Sprint's NYC market covers all the Boroughs, Westchester, and the Hudson Valley all the way up to Saugerties. North Jersey, Long Island and Southern Connecticut are in separate markets and will deploy at a later date. Alcatel/Lucent will be preparing for mobilization in the near future and work should commence on converting these 1,100+ sites to Network Vision standards. The entire market will take more than 8 months to complete, but there will be many sites coming online monthly for first round LTE device holders to enjoy.

With the release of New York City today, that brings the total of Network Vision markets announced to eleven. Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Baltimore and Kansas City as announced by Sprint. Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Washington, D.C. and New York City announced by Sprint 4G Rollout Updates.

Stay tuned to Sprint 4G Rollout Updates. On Monday we will be announcing another Network Vision/LTE market that Alcatel/Lucent will be working to bring online for Sprint in 2012. This is likely the final A/L market for 2012. If A/L gets ahead of schedule (and Sprint has the cash flow to accelerate), it's possible they may start the next round of market deployments prior to the end of 2012.

    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Monday, June 25, 2012 - 12:08 PM MDT

The next market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is just about to get moving...the Norfolk and the Virginia Tidewater Region. The Norfolk market has yet to be announced by Sprint, but is expected to be announced in the near future. Perhaps around the time of the first market launches.

The Sprint Norfolk market covers basically all of Southeast Virginia and the Hampton Roads, from the Norfolk/Virginia Beach metro area, up through Hampton/Newport News and Williamsburg, on the Virginia portion of the Delmarva peninsula and the Northern portion of North Carolina's Outer Banks. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Alcatel/Lucent is scheduled to begin mobilizing in this area with its subcontractors this month. Completed Network Vision sites should start coming online in July.

However, in an unannounced market like Norfolk, we don't know if they will resume pushing back market launches to 50%, or if they will now settle on a 40% completion to be the new normal for market launches.

If Sprint waits for 50% completion to launch the Norfolk market, it would make the launch month to be November (should the OEM stay on schedule).

We currently do not have a date that Sprint will formally "launch" the Norfolk market. It is really hard to call at this point, but the schedule as of today would indicate an October or November market launch (going on a 40% - 50% completion for launch). But there is no way to know if Alcatel/Lucent and their subcontractors will actually hit their schedule dates this early in the deployment for this market. We will be able to gauge better after a few months of production.

AlcaLu will only need to hit a production rate of 35 sites per month to stay on schedule. This seems like an easy to achieve rate, compared with how other Network Vision markets are progressing. In fact, they may be able to beat this conservative production rate and complete the market early. Here's to hoping!

S4GRU has examined the schedule in great detail in this market and sees that most of the sites will be complete by February 2013. However, there may be a few sporadic sites that will linger past the completion.

    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Tuesday, June 19, 2012 - 6:35 PM MDT

Whether you call it the District, DC or simply Washington doesn't much matter. Soon we will be able to call it a Sprint 4G LTE city. The next market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is...Washington, D.C.. This market has not been announced by Sprint, but appears to be on the way for a late August launch.

The Sprint Washington DC market covers all of the District Columbia, and the Maryland and Virginia DC suburbs. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Alcatel/Lucent has been actively deploying in the Washington DC market since March and is making good progress. As of this week, there are approximately 50 Network Vision sites that have completed upgrades. These sites are located throughout the market. Mostly in D.C. and the Maryland side, but sites are now starting to come live on the Virginia side.

Network Vision Sites in the Washington DC market. Approximately fifty Network Vision sites are complete in the market.

However, in an unannounced market like DC, we don't know if they will resume pushing back market launches to 50%, or if they will now settle on a 30% - 40% completion to be the new normal for market launches.

If Sprint waits for 50% completion to launch the DC market, it would make the launch month to be September (should AlcaLu stay on schedule). That being said, if Sprint should launch around the third week of August (as we suspect), then the market would be less than 50% complete. This doesn't sound like enough, but it would provide pretty good coverage. Even Verizon doesn't launch on all sites in a market initially. Usually less than 50%, then filling in with more and more sites every few months.

Anticipated Sites Complete at Market Launch. According to the Network Vision schedules that S4GRU has reviewed, if Sprint launched the market in late August, these are the anticipated sites that would likely have LTE complete at that time. This would provide fairly good LTE coverage over many parts of the market.

Sprint is not reporting any of these live Network Vision sites in the DC market as currently broadcasting 4G LTE, only 3G EVDO.

    The bottom line...

We currently do not have a date that Sprint will formally "launch" the Washington DC market. We believe they are targeting a launch month of August based on reports internally within Sprint. However, after reviewing the schedule, it may actually pan out to be late August or the first of September. Sprint will likely announce a launch date for this market, and a few others like Austin, Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles around the time of the first launch.

Sprint's schedule for this market currently has 50 Network Vision sites complete. Alcatel/Lucent is continuing to progress and is planning to increase the production rate up to 100 sites per month from here forward. This seems like an impossible production rate to us.

S4GRU has examined the schedule in great detail in this market and sees that most of the sites will be complete by January 2013. However, there are several sites that will linger past the completion. In our estimation of the schedule, AlcaLu is currently right on time, but may have issues meeting this rate identified in Sprint's schedule.

    Sprint 4G Rollout Updates
    Friday, March 23, 2012 - 4:00 AM MDT

Another double Sunshine State announcement! We are now prepared to tell you about two more Round Two markets in Sprint's Network Vision/LTE deployment plans for 2012...

    Tampa and Jacksonville!

Sprint's Network Vision vendor Ericsson is scheduled to begin these markets in the early Second Round. Ericsson and their subcontractors are scheduled to begin mobilization into these markets in July with the first sites starting to come live in August. This is an exciting development because this is the first time we have been able to announce start dates for a newly announced second round market.

    Sprint's Tampa market

Sprint's Tampa market covers the whole Tampa Bay and Pinellas Peninsula region. Including the cities of Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, New Port Richey, St. Pete Beach, Dunedin, Brandon, Plant City, Apollo Beach, Tarpon Springs, Spring Hill, Brooksville and Zephyrhills. It is bordered by the Jacksonville market to the north, the Orlando market to the east and the Southwest Florida market to the south. The Tampa market will have 302 sites in total after Network Vision is complete.

    Sprint's Jacksonville market

Sprint's Jacksonville market includes most of North Florida and the First Coast. It includes Jacksonville, Gainesville, Ocala, St. Augustine, Palatka, Orange Park, Ponte Vedra Beach, Jacksonville Beach, Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach, Green Cove Springs, Starke, Inverness, Wildwood, Crystal River and Homosassa Springs. It is bordered by the Tampa and Orlando markets to the south and The Panhandle market to the west and the GA/SC Coast market to the north. A total of 356 Network Vision sites.

Sprint's Jacksonville Market. All of the approximately 350+ Network Vision sites are shown for the Jacksonville market in this map. Click on image to enlarge.

Although we know the scheduled start date...

It's exciting that we can tell you the start dates of the Tampa and Jacksonville markets. However, we cannot guarantee at this time that things will not change. Sprint has not officially announced these markets and for good reason.

Sprint has three different OEM vendors, with several different crews in many markets at once. There could be final permitting and design delays, some vendors and/or crews will work at different speeds, weather issues and any number of unforeseen circumstances to complicate matters even further.

The work hasn't started and they are keeping their options open. Sprint has said they may elect to slow down Network Vision in future quarters if cash flow becomes strained. And this could affect these markets.

All of these reasons explain why Sprint likely elected not to announce these markets themselves at this time. But we know you don't want to wait for Sprint to tell you! With these caveats understood, we are releasing the information about these markets as it exists to date.
