Sprint talks up its incoming LTE devices, explains lack of Windows Phones

Sprint announced back in October that it was planning to launch an LTE network, and since then new details on the impending switch have trickled out, most recently with the naming of its first four LTE markets and the news that its first two LTE smartphones will be the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and LG Viper. Today Sprint's VP of product realization David Owens talked to PC Mag a bit more about the carrier's LTE plans as well as what the switch means for any future WiMAX smartphones. (Hint: There probably won't be any.) Owens said that although the Galaxy Nexus and Viper will be hitting other carriers before they arrive on the Now Network, Sprint will differentiate its models with things like Google Wallet support. It's also possible that we'll see other LTE handsets by the middle of the year, which Owens explained means that Sprint is basically finished with releasing any new WiMAX-capable smartphones.

Owens also talked a bit about Windows Phone and why Sprint has only released one device (the HTC Arrive) running Microsoft's mobile OS thus far. "We have a Windows device in our lineup, but honestly, it hasn't done well enough for us to jump back into the fire," he told PC Mag, adding that the number one reason that the Arrive was returned to stores was the user experience. Sprint director of product development Lois Fagan chimed in by saying that the carrier wants to take part in selling the devices, but that Microsoft needs to help build excitement around the platform. Owens said that Sprint is considering giving Windows Phone another shot around the "August-September period."

Obviously Owens' statements about Windows Phone are kind of a bummer for fans of the platform, especially ones that can't or won't leave Sprint for another network. Sprint isn't the only carrier that doesn't seem particularly excited about Windows Phone, though, as its CDMA compatriot Verizon has also only released one of the platform's products to date. Right now the go-to carrier for Windows Phone folk looks to be AT&T, especially with the recent introductions of the HTC Titan II and Nokia Lumia 900. The good news is that we've heard that Microsoft may be planning to release the next major version of Windows Phone, codenamed Apollo, around the same timeframe that Owens said Sprint may try the platform again, so both Sprint and its customers could have some new Windows Phone goodies to check out by the time that that August/September window rolls around.

They already said they would be phasing WiMax out in 2013, so unless you want your customers screaming for an early upgrade to get an LTE phone when Wimax goes dark, you should at least stop releasing new phones with WiMax.

Edit: the WiMax agreement with Clearwire was extended through 2015

  • 2 months later...

The NS4G is already on sale for "free" for new customer lines. The Photon is being EOL'd in April. Inventory clearance sales are starting to occur more frequently. The best selling phone that Sprint has in its line-up today is the Epic Touch, and I expect bigger sales and discounts on that beginning in May.

    • Kind of amazing that T-Mobile is still holding onto that speed title despite Verizon all but killing off lowband 5G on their network. While Verizon is mostly being evaluated on mmWave and C-band performance, T-Mobile and AT&T's average 5G speeds include their massive lowband 5G networks that are significantly slower.

    • Yup. Very true. We were originally on an Everything Data 1500 Plan, which got Unlimited Minutes thanks to Marcelo's "Loyalty Benefits" offer. We then switched to Unlimited Freedom (with the Free HD add-on that Sprint originally wanted $20/month per line for.... remember that?) because the pricing was better with "iPhone for Life", vs. the "Loyalty Credit" for staying on a Legacy Plan. After that, I ran the numbers and switched us over to Sprint MAX, especially for the international travel benefits. There's absolutely no reason for us to switch to Go5G Plus or Go5G Next if we're going to do BYOD by purchasing from Apple/Samsung/Google directly as we've been doing. These new plans aren't priced for current customers to switch to. They're priced for new customers, where they throw in a free line, etc. It's gone from "Uncarrier" to "Carrier". What a shame.
    • Strange business model that they keep around all these pricing plans. 1000s of plans per carrier is reportedly not uncommon.  Training customer support must be a nightmare. Even MVNOs have legacy plans. A downside of their contract mentality I guess. Best to change contracts during a recession. But then all carriers try to squeeze out legacy plan benefits as they grow old.
    • Everything "Uncarrier" is becoming "Carrier" again. Because of the Credit Limit that T-Mobile put on our account for no reason at all (and wouldn't change/update the last time I checked all the way up to the CEO), I don't plan on buying/upgrading our iPhones through T-Mobile. I'm going through Apple directly. Looks like I'll be going through Google and Samsung directly for our other lines for upgrades. Also, we're staying on Sprint Max given the ridiculous pricing for Go5G Plus. On Sprint Max, we currently pay for our Plan: $260 for 7 Voice Lines $25 for two Wearable Lines. (One is $10/Month. The other is $15/Month because the AutoPay discount only applies up to 8 lines.) Total: $285/Month vs. Go5G Plus (Per the Broadband Facts "nutrition label" on the T-Mobile Website): https://www.t-mobile.com/commerce/cell-phone-plans $360 - ($5 AutoPay Discount x 7 Voice Lines) = $325 The Watch Plans show as either $12/Month or $15/Month: https://www.t-mobile.com/cell-phone-plans/affordable-data-plans/smartwatches So this is about the same for the wearables as what we're paying now. Overall, it's quite more than we're paying now to switch plans. Ridiculous....
