This is an Alpha build, which means it is highly experimental and has many components that do not function yet, but this is great news for E4GT owners itching for ice cream sandwich. Samsung has said that they will have ICS for the international version of the GSII released by the end of the first quarter. That probably means that the E4GT will be sometime after that (possibly weeks or months).

CM9 will give E4GT owners ICS sooner and some might say it will be a better version by the exclusion of touchwiz and being AOSP based. Hopefully they get everything working perfect sooner than later. It was a good thing when the cyanogen mod team had a E4GT donated for development.

Barely anything works in an alpha and if you are not careful or know what you are doing, you can brick your phone. Furthermore, the developers don't want people who load up an alpha build to submit bug reports.

Beta build is when the developer has worked out most of the kinks. There may still be some non-working components like GPS, 4G etc, but the OS is stable enough and has enough components that it could be a daily OS for someone. On a beta build, the developers release it for users to test and submit bug reports.

After Beta testing has completed and the developer feels that the software is stable and every piece of hardware is supported, it becomes a release candidate. Many times, the release candidate is tested shortly and released. Sometimes it can go through several stages, but if updates are easily distributed, the developer may release it right away without much testing, figuring they will release an update to fix any bugs that surface after release.

Hope that little vignette on software development helps.

Just waiting for the dam to burst and all the ICS ROM's hit the streets

From what I've read, CM9 should be REALLY good, but who knows. It's supposed to feel like it shipped on the phone instead of a hacked OS made to work.

I have high hopes for CM9. However, I'm starting to get impatient. It's February now. It must be much more entailed than originally thought.

My wife is loving her 7" cheap chinese tablet with ICS.

as we saw from the cyanogen blog the other day... cm9 itself is not finished. yes.. there are some devices running an up-to-date ics build.. but those are devices with most of the source already released.

as far as i know.. its a very small group of people(those that released the initial cm9 build on xda last week).. building CM9 completely from source.. fromm the ground up. no hacks or cheap fixes... when it is finished.. it will be added to the official CM repo. there are other devs running around who will be left unnamed who claim they have CM9 almost working blah blah bah... at best.. those will be hacked together roms with most of the code stolen from the international sgs2 build... so while it may initially sort of work.. dont everrrr expect to see progress or nightly builds on those.

currently the devs are stuck with getting wifi working correctly.. its looking like a kernel issue. while there are some other devs working on a 3.0 kernel... we may need to wait for a leak from an official ICS samsung rom first before we get some files we need. remember.. the international version has seen 5+ leaked ICS builds already... while E4GT has seen 0.

the devs working on this are extremely talented.. and im not saying that just for some ass-kissing. this is the same group of people that released AOSP builds for the Fascinate... so they have great aosp/samsung experience behind them.

as soon as wifi is fixed.. another public released will be posted. not sure what the next step to tackle is after that. wimax is gonna be near the end of the list... though because the CM Epic team has managed to fix wimax for them.. it will happen for us as well.

like i said above.. for our E4GT.. it's looking like April/May for a fully working build. But it'll be a build so awesome.. you'll never look back. guess it sucks for those that'll be switching to the Galaxy Nexus in June.. but for those staying with wimax.. you'll have one amazing device.

i'll be switching to the galaxy nexus asap.. but im def holding onto the e4gt... it will be my main wimax device til at least 2015. got hold of some internal wimax testing credentials that i dont see expiring ever :)

*edit*

oh and anyone with a touchpad.. ICS is AWESOME on it... and with HP releasing source yesterday.. it's only gonna get better!!

Thanks for that thorough update autoprime. :goodpost:

I know it's easy to be critical from our perches. However, since I am likely to jump in with a LTE device pretty early, if custom ICS availability for the E4GT is too much farther out, I won't have much use for it. But that's my issue. :zip:

Yeah, it is easy to be critical from our perches, and by no means am I saying anyone in here is guilty of this, but people tend to get so annoying and "entitled" over at XDA. If I was developing a ROM I wouldn't even bother reading the comments, people treat them like they are employees but yet never donate for their work.

All too true! I know I go through ups and downs here. But when you really feel like you've reached someone and they really appreciate it, the feeling can last you several days. And that makes it worth it.

I need to work on that, still. It's on my To Do List. You think it would be priority Number One, right?

get on that Donate button! ;)

haha but ya.. just wanted to get you guys up to speed without having to sift thru the xda/rootzwiki forum drama and BS out there. im not a dev.. but i'm right there on the front line.. so i see whats really going on. and my time frame for release is only a personal guess based on the rate of progress I've seen along the way. We could see an ICS leak tomorrow and find a quick fix for some of the major problems... and see a daily driver build by the end of this month.

I really hope they get this running strong !

I`ve always wanted to run it but there was always something not working :(

All my devices have to be running tip-top or it drives me nuts

until I fix it !

Every option needs to work !

I'm with you. I love to be an early adopter. But I like to be the first adopter of stable, fully functioning releases. I can live with some bugs, so long as everything that I use works.

    • Since this is kind of the general chat thread, I have to share this humorous story (at least it is to me): Since around February/March of this year, my S22U has been an absolute pain to charge. USB-C cables would immediately fall out and it progressively got worse and worse until it often took me a number of minutes to get the angle of the cable juuuussst right to get charging to occur at all (not exaggerating). The connection was so weak that even walking heavily could cause the cable to disconnect. I tried cleaning out the port with a stable, a paperclip, etc. Some dust/lint/dirt came out but the connection didn't improve one bit. Needless to say, this was a MONSTER headache and had me hating this phone. I just didn't have the finances right now for a replacement.  Which brings us to the night before last. I am angry as hell because I had spent five minutes trying to get this phone to charge and failed. I am looking in the port and I notice it doesn't look right. The walls look rough and, using a staple, the back and walls feel REALLY rough and very hard. I get some lint/dust out with the staple and it improves charging in the sense I can get it to charge but it doesn't remove any of the hard stuff. It's late and it's charging, so that's enough for now. I decide it's time to see if that hard stuff is part of the connector or not. More aggressive methods are needed! I work in a biochem lab and we have a lot of different sizes of disposable needles available. So, yesterday morning, while in the lab I grab a few different sizes of needles between 26AWG and 31 AWG. When I got home, I got to work and start probing the connector with the 26 AWG and 31 AWG needle. The stuff feels extremely hard, almost like it was part of the connector, but a bit does break off. Under examination of the bit, it's almost sandy with dust/lint embedded in it. It's not part of the connector but instead some sort of rock-hard crap! That's when I remember that I had done some rock hounding at the end of last year and in January. This involved lots of digging in very sandy/dusty soils; soils which bare more than a passing resemblance to the crap in the connector. We have our answer, this debris is basically compacted/cemented rock dust. Over time, moisture in the area combined with the compression from inserting the USB-C connector had turned it into cement. I start going nuts chiseling away at it with the 26 AWG needle. After about 5-10 minutes of constant chiseling and scraping with the 26AWG and 31AWG needles, I see the first signs of metal at the back of the connector. So it is metal around the outsides! Another 5 minutes of work and I have scraped away pretty much all of the crap in the connector. A few finishing passes with the 31AWG needle, a blast of compressed air, and it is time to see if this helped any. I plug my regular USB-C cable and holy crap it clicks into place; it hasn't done that since February! I pick up the phone and the cable has actually latched! The connector works pretty much like it did over a year ago, it's almost like having a brand new phone!
    • That's odd, they are usually almost lock step with TMO. I forgot to mention this also includes the September Security Update.
    • 417.55 MB September security update just downloaded here for S24+ unlocked   Edit:  after Sept security update install, checked and found a 13MB GP System update as well.  Still showing August 1st there however.
    • T-Mobile is selling the rest of the 3.45GHz spectrum to Columbia Capital.
    • Still nothing for my AT&T and Visible phones.
