Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Dying Embers Thread

Well from what I see its not a bad rf performer but it prefers band 25 over band 41 for some reason. I can still see a really good band 41 signal but it will not change. The note 5 holds on to band 41 so much better but is weaker on band 25. Band 26 on both devices are about equal. Maybe slightly better on the note 7. Also I notice my note 7 always has better speed test results than the note 5. I was in walmart early this morning and my note 7 was on band 41 maybe 15% of the time while the note 5 was on band 41 around 85% of the time. I was shocked. At my house the difference is not as much. But the note 5 definitely without a doubt is better at switching and staying on band 41. Maybe a software update will correct this.

Doubt it. B41 didnt help b26 capacity at all. It did help b25 though. That went from sub 0.5mbps to 2-5mbps in peak hours. But band 41 even with a single tower is over 20mbps at all times of day.

That is a huge difference!

 

Band 41, at least in my opinion, is Sprint's main spectrum band. Granted the PCS band has been Sprint's known spectrum band for many years and in some areas its very strong and stable where it isn't such an issue, while others band 41 is very important to have. Besides that, there is the outlook where band 41 should be strong and stable everywhere its available, and that devices manufactured nowadays ought to be able to provide that very well.

 

I also wonder how much of this has to do with Sprint. Now in your town, certainly since the Note 5 does well, Sprint at least is providing band 41 plenty. Yet in other areas, it is not, with many sites completely without band 41. This is where I question Sprint's leadership and wonder about if Dan Hesse were in charge, would this be happening still where so many sites are left unequipped with band 41.

 

Sprint ought to get developing NGN and getting band 41 to most sites, while doing whatever they can to get some standards to handset manufacturers on band 41 signal reception expectations. I'm not sure just how much power/persuasion Sprint has in this, but they at least ought to try, because having such a weak band 41 signal seems unacceptable to me when considering how important this is to Sprint and their business nowadays.

I agree 100%. Thats why I know at least 40% of sites don't have it. In 2016 5x5mhz as the main band is simply unacceptable expect in the most rural areas. I get band 41 in my house consistently on the note 7 though not that it matters since I have 150 mbps wifi. This afternoon I noticed it switching faster than last night and earlier this morning.

Can you try to see if adjusting the ##Data# LTE band priority for B41 first help?

MSLs are very easy to get from Sprint chat. Just say something isn't working right on your phone and you want to do a network reset ("RTN" if they ask for more than that). Should be quick and painless.

Band priority is just for initial scanning/connecting. If the phone deems band 25 the appropriate band to sit on, that's what it's going to do.

Did a factory reset yesterday and didnt use smart switch. Wow what a difference. The lag just magically disappeared. Side by side its now beating the note 5 opening apps most times. Also I didn't think black levels could improve anymore on samsung devices but man was I wrong. The blacks on the note 7 are much deeper than the note 5.

I'm quite disappointed with this phone, it feels "half baked". Got another 3 weeks to continue playing with it. Hopefully they will have released an update to help with the bugs before then.

Also I didn't think black levels could improve anymore on samsung devices but man was I wrong. The blacks on the note 7 are much deeper than the note 5.

That's great. What about B41? After the reset is the phone holding B41 more?

Uh oh. Im seeing lag on this phone and I have disabled and uninstalled alot of bloat. Whats worse is it's inconsistent lag. Great and then terrible.

There is a video online somewhere, might have been on XDA Developers where the Samsung Note 7 was compared with the iPhone 6s Plus, and the iPhone was much faster than the Note 7, which the Note 7 showed a lot of lag, the iPhone performing nearly twice as fast.

    • I think it is likely that T-Mobile will be forced to honor any existing US cellular roaming agreements in those areas as a condition of them taking over the spectrum.  In that case, there would be no improvement of service unless T-Mobile improves the service offering in those areas.
    • My understanding is the MNO carriers are the one who have objected to the use of cell phones in commercial planes.  I understand that it ties down too many cell phones at once, thus I can not see this changing. However this depends on how it is structured. Use of a different plmn for satellite service might make it possible for planes only to connect with satellite. Private pilots have been using cellphones in planes for many decades. Far fewer phones at a lower altitude.
    • On Reddit, someone asked (skeptically) if the US Cellular buyout would result in better service.  I'd been pondering this very issue, and decided to cross-post my response here: I've been pondering the question in the title and I've come to the conclusion that the answer is that it's possible. Hear me out. Unlike some of the small carriers that work exclusively with one larger carrier, all three major carriers roam on US Cellular today in at least some areas, so far as I know. If that network ceases to exist, then the carriers would presumably want to recover those areas of lost service by building out natively. Thus, people in those areas who may only have service from US Cellular or from US Cellular and one other may gain competition from other carriers backfilling that loss. How likely is it? I'm not sure. But it's definitely feasible. Most notably, AT&T did their big roaming deal with US Cellular in support of FirstNet in places where they lacked native coverage. They can't just lose a huge chunk of coverage whole still making FirstNet happy; I suspect they'll have to build out and recover at least some of that area, if not most of it. So it'd be indirect, but I could imagine it. - Trip
    • Historically, T-Mobile has been the only carrier contracting with Crown Castle Solutions, at least in Brooklyn. I did a quick count of the ~35 nodes currently marked as "installed" and everything mapped appears to be T-Mobile. However, they have a macro sector pointed directly at this site and seem to continue relying on the older-style DAS nodes. Additionally, there's another Crown Castle Solutions node approved for construction just around the corner, well within range of their macro. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Verizon using a new vendor for their mmWave build, especially since the macro site directly behind this node lacks mmWave/CBRS deployment (limited to LTE plus C-Band). However, opting for a multi-carrier solution here seems unlikely unless another carrier has actually joined the build. This node is equidistant (about five blocks) between two AT&T macro sites, and there are no oDAS nodes deployed nearby. Although I'm not currently mapping AT&T, based on CellMapper, it appears to be right on cell edge for both sites. Regardless, it appears that whoever is deploying is planning for a significant build. There are eight Crown Castle Solutions nodes approved for construction in a 12-block by 2-block area.
