Hotspots in GM vehicles (Old News)

I know this has been out for a while, but coming in a few short months we will see the Wi-Fi built in to OnStar with AT&T 4G LTE technology.

The question though is, cost. No where has hinted at plans or pricing.

What do you guys think of this and do you think this will have an impact on Sprint, T-Mobile or Verizon? Do you think we will see this technology expand to other vehicles and carriers?

This is nothing new in terms of ground breaking technology, just backed by a vendor. Cost shouldn't be any different than a mobile hotspot plan since the technology is the same. May be a $5 discount as OnStar may front some of the bill since you pay for them anyway which will probably offset by a price increase. I don't see other carriers rushing to do so. It will come eventually over the next decade.

I know it's nothing new, that's why I titled it "Old News" because it is many years old, but it is new because this is the first year they are putting it into play.

I thought onStar used Verizon, but I guess I thought wrong.

I know, that was news to me too.

Onstar has used and will continue to use Verizon for all Onstar equipped vehicles from 2014 and prior. Starting in the 2015 model year, they are switching to AT&T as their cellular provider.

I think Chrysler uses Verizon also through a third party.

Chrysler, and its subsidiaries (Jeep/Dodge), currently use Sprint 3G for wifi hotspots in their cars. This is true for in-house electronics, not third party addons. Why Chrysler would not implement Sprint 4G is beyond me. Needless to say, Chrysler acts as an MVNO for Sprint, Chrysler charges the user to use the wifi hotspot feature. I'll add more later when I get the chance to mess around with Chrysler's UConnect system in my Jeep Grand Cherokee.

    • Your referring to the $25.00 a month Infinite Unlimited plan?  I don't see any other plans on there even cheaper than that on their website.  I was looking at the Motorola 2023 Edge fwiw as well for $10.00 a month.
    • A heavy n41 overlay as an acquisition condition would be a win for customers, and eventually a win for T-Mobile as that might be enough to preclude VZW/AT&T adding C-Band for FWA due to spreading the market too thinly (which means T-Mobile would just have local WISPs/wireline ISPs as competition). USCC spacing (which is likely for contiguous 700 MHz LTE coverage in rural areas) isn't going to be enough for contiguous n41 anyway, and I doubt they'll densify enough to get there.
    • Boost Infinite with a rainbow SIM (you can get it SIM-only) is the cheapest way, at $25/mo, to my knowledge; the cheaper Boost Mobile plans don't run on Dish native. Check Phonescoop for n70 support on a given phone; the Moto G 5G from last year may be the cheapest unlocked phone with n70 though data speeds aren't as good as something with an X70 or better modem.
    • Continuing the USCC discussion, if T-Mobile does a full equipment swap at all of USCC's sites, which they probably will for vendor consistency, and if they include 2.5 on all of those sites, which they probably will as they definitely have economies of scale on the base stations, that'll represent a massive capacity increase in those areas over what USCC had, and maybe a coverage increase since n71 will get deployed everywhere and B71 will get deployed any time T-Mobile has at least 25x25, and maybe where they have 20x20. Assuming this deal goes through (I'm betting it does), I figure I'll see contiguous coverage in the area of southern IL where I was attempting to roam on USCC the last time I was there, though it might be late next year before that switchover happens.
    • Forgot to post this, but a few weeks ago I got to visit these small cells myself! They're spread around Grant park and the surrounding areas, but unfortunately none of the mmwave cells made it outside of the parks along the lake into the rest of downtown. I did spot some n41 small cells around downtown, but they seemed to be older deployments limited to 100mhz and performed poorly.
