So I went to Lake Lure, NC last night. This area is covered by USCC and Verizon. My phone would show "extended" 1x while on Verizon and "Sprint" 1x while on USCC. Is this normal?

How could you tell you were on USCC?

 

I have been there a couple of times, and my phone was always switching between Extended 1x, Sprint 1x and Sprint 3G. At least it was better than my Mother's AT&T iPhone 5 with Searching... and No Service ;)

I did a few mock calls and the error message was US Cell. Plus Sprint has no native towers there. I was at the Lake Lure Inn.

Yup, I know exactly where you were. Sprint might have a contract with USCC that makes their coverage in Lake Lure "native" Sprint coverage. I wouldn't be too surprised if that's the case.

I was in Lake Lure, NC last year and had the same exact experience (in fact I was on EV-DO too)... turned out it was "carolina wireless" or something similar... it is native coverage.  It was actually a great experience -- we were in a timeshare/condo in the middle of no where on the north end of the lake and had FULL bars with nearly 2mpbs download speeds all week (was a better internet connection than the wi-fi)...

Sadly the wireless experience at the Lake Lure Inn isn't as great as your's was. :(

Very true Anthony. I believe there is only one tower on the north side of the lake near that condo thewezgreys is talking about. Although I don't think Carolina West Wireless has service in Rutherford County???? I know the cellular A and B licenses are held by Verizon and USCC. CWW does have some PCS in the Hickory area. Maybe they own PCS near Lake Lure but I don't think they do.

      You could also just sign up for Project Genesis directly, $400 for the moto edge+ 2023 and $25/month for service.

      Your referring to the $25.00 a month Infinite Unlimited plan?  I don't see any other plans on there even cheaper than that on their website.  I was looking at the Motorola 2023 Edge fwiw as well for $10.00 a month.

      A heavy n41 overlay as an acquisition condition would be a win for customers, and eventually a win for T-Mobile as that might be enough to preclude VZW/AT&T adding C-Band for FWA due to spreading the market too thinly (which means T-Mobile would just have local WISPs/wireline ISPs as competition). USCC spacing (which is likely for contiguous 700 MHz LTE coverage in rural areas) isn't going to be enough for contiguous n41 anyway, and I doubt they'll densify enough to get there.

      Boost Infinite with a rainbow SIM (you can get it SIM-only) is the cheapest way, at $25/mo, to my knowledge; the cheaper Boost Mobile plans don't run on Dish native. Check Phonescoop for n70 support on a given phone; the Moto G 5G from last year may be the cheapest unlocked phone with n70 though data speeds aren't as good as something with an X70 or better modem.

      Continuing the USCC discussion, if T-Mobile does a full equipment swap at all of USCC's sites, which they probably will for vendor consistency, and if they include 2.5 on all of those sites, which they probably will as they definitely have economies of scale on the base stations, that'll represent a massive capacity increase in those areas over what USCC had, and maybe a coverage increase since n71 will get deployed everywhere and B71 will get deployed any time T-Mobile has at least 25x25, and maybe where they have 20x20. Assuming this deal goes through (I'm betting it does), I figure I'll see contiguous coverage in the area of southern IL where I was attempting to roam on USCC the last time I was there, though it might be late next year before that switchover happens.
