Trouble with Google maps custom markers

So I'm making a kml in google maps relevant to this site and am having issues with using my own icons instead of the default markers.  I only have about 80 markers but they are all custom icons instead of the default google markers (only 6 unique images among the 80 though).  When I load the map on my phone (GS4), it will only load about 75 of the markers with the correct icon, and then the rest will be the default blue google marker.  I thought it might be that particular image timing out from the server (google drive) but when I kept editing the incorrect markers they would become correct but other markers would change to the wrong marker so that wasn't it.  Does anyone know what is causing this?  Is there a timeout for loading the entire map at which point everything that hasn't been rendered defaults to the blue google marker, is there a hard limit in the number of custom icons in the phone app, or is it something else?

Also, I was wondering if there is a way to resize the markers at various zoom levels?  Having a different marker for each zoom level would also work.  The 64x64 size works great on my pc, but in the phone app they are teeny tiny.  You can barely make out the color, let alone the text on them.  It looks great if I go to google maps in a browser on my phone, but it's unbelievably slow to scroll or zoom.  The default google markers automatically resize in the phone app to be way bigger than my icons.  I know you can do this with the API, but is it possible with just a kml file viewed in google maps?  If not, what's a good maps API tutorial? ;)

I know on the Fusion tables maps when K refresh my map I have to not go look at it for 10 minutes or so it has the chicken pox problem that people have coined it as. It's due to the cache.

For the kml part I load it in the Google maps app and the icon size looks fine to me. I have heard the new Google map app doesn't work with kml files on the network. Google maps got added to my growing list of apps not to update.. Maps, Gmail, talk, slacker, etc..

6.14.4

I have a little over 300 points on our map and it doesn't load them all. Just the ones near you. Once I drive out of the area it loaded I just hit back then go to layers and hit user created content again.

 I have 6.14.4.  The standard google markers like on the maps here look fine, even though they are technically only around 36 or so pixels tall.  My icons display about 1/4 the size of the google markers in the app, but almost twice the size of the google markers on the website.

I have had this problem when I had a very poor signal strength....never had it happen on wifi or LTE.

    • I don't disagree entirely but a lot of the really rural coverage (like where I grew up) still has little or no competition.  There is a lot of overlap but there are also a number of unique sites that will help things. But also, the fact is that a lot of the rural T-Mobile coverage is still "map filler" coverage that doesn't actually provide reliable service.  This will help. https://imgur.com/a/LRWF3FO Using where I grew up as an example, magenta is T-Mobile, blue is US Cellular, and gold are unique sites Shentel planned but didn't get a chance to construct before the buyout derailed things. EDIT: And even a number of the T-Mobile sites shown here are Shentel conversions.  The only reason for the site NW of Keysville is that Shentel built that one before the buyout pause.  The site southwest of Meherrin wasn't a Shentel conversion, although Shentel did plan to build there, but rather was added to fill a gap along US-360 when the Shentel conversions were taking place.  Three of the five sites in Farmville proper are Shentel conversions also, as is the one north of town just barely on the map. - Trip
