So..Clearwire...

Recommended Posts

Verizon's graphic is misleading, as it takes five 2600 sites to cover the same area as one PCS site (when allowing the proper signal overlap). If this was the case, then Sprint could deploy 2600 right over its 1900 network and just increase the broadcast power slightly and get equal coverage. Which, of course, they cannot. Based on internal Sprint FIT documents, Sprint LTE 1900 extends 57% further from a co-located site than WiMax 2600. Not only does PCS 1900 extend a lot further, but the service area within the coverage is more dense with a stronger signal, and it penetrates much better.

And the ironic part is - in downtown Boston, Clearwire overlaid on Sprint's PCS network (except for one location where they setup across the street).

The really ironic part is, they didn't even overlay 2/3rds of Sprint's PCS sites. Sprint has 17 "towers" downtown. Clearwire overlaid on 10 of them (11th across the street from sprint).

It's just odd that Clearwire would think that this would even be remotely acceptable to customers.

For overlaying LTE, it makes sense. For WiMAX, it was idiotic and a giant waste of money.

Even though it was probably still insufficient, the Sprint site spacing in Downtown Boston is much denser than PCS is typically. Probably closer to BRS spacing.

I have to say, I think all of the comments from Sprint saying 'Oh no we don't plan on acquiring Clearwire at least not anytime soon' etc etc is mainly to keep the stock price low, especially after that 70% increase in share price after the announcement was made and rumors started flying. I think Sprint is being smart about this, playing it close to the cuff until it's essentially a done deal, the same way Softbank and Sprint handled their negotiations and partnership.
