  1. Mobilitie has filed for permits with the City of Tampa. Looks like the process started on May 31st and they have been going back and forth for a while. Tampa's permitting system is a little wonky, but very detailed.

Go here: https://aca.tampagov.net/citizenaccess/ and search for either Mobilitie or "ROW-16-0000643"

If you click 'Application Information Table' you'll get more detail to work locations and specific site plans are posted at the bottom of the page under 'Attachments.'

Exciting to see more small cell work underway in my hometown.

  2. Those are reasons, or you can also say excuses, why Clearwire's network was never something to brag about.  Houston was also one of the more developed markets for Wimax but it acted more hot spots than it did a mobile network.  Handoffs weren't great.

Yeah, while WiMax wasn't a great technology for how it was implemented, the legacy Clear network has been godsend in DC once they added B41 LTE (and then CA once WiMax was retired). I think WiMax still could have a future in certain fixed WISP environments.

  3. Not to continue this conversation (with passive aggressive personal jabs), but I did find this on the Googlez:

Personally, I don't really care because a house will appreciate at about the same rate as its neighbors. I am a little disheartened because I thought the whole point of NGN was to use existing right of way infrastructure to rapidly get equipment installed.

  4. I thought so. New York is much easier for all of that due to how dense the city is. Other cities like DC, North Florida and central, Mississippi, Louisiana, Memphis, Alabama, and countless other markets are still suffering from lack of. New York almost cant be compared because its so different.

DC? Huh? I've lived here for a decade and haven't really had any issues in service until I head to the outer suburbs. I visit my hometown of Tampa a lot more and don't really have any issues even in the horrid suburbs of Pasco.

  5. Anyone know what is happening with the sites in Door County? They were NV complete a long time ago, but years later they are still 3g only. Sprint's coverage map seems to indicate these received LTE since it shows LTE all up the peninsula. Are the maps just out of date or does Sprint really think their 1 LTE tower across Green Bay is enough to cover Door County with LTE north of Sturgeon Bay?

Maps have not been updated in a long time. We no longer have a reliable source for them.

  6. Beep, beep, beep.

I am sorry, but you did not pose your response in the proper form of a question.

Mr. Connery, you have the board.

Let me try - when did Sprint start offering international LTE roaming?

  7. All the CAPEX speculation doesn't concern me. It'll be nice if the $3,000,000,000 went towards getting all of the macro sites running with appropriate backhaul and then go from there.

So many sites here in CT which aren't broadcasting LTE and lack fiber.

As a Florida-native that still manages an office in Tampa, I am going to blame Frontier for being a complete disaster. I do concur though that hopefully they can get the backhaul provisioning in check. Although, I am not sure how Sprint accounts for backhaul upgrades - I'd assume it depends on the agreement with each provider. (E.g. do they only charge 'one-time/setup expenses' to CAPEX, whereas the rest is just an operational cost) Either way, the uptick in microwave backhaul should help bring more rural/suburban sites LTE online.

  8. It looks like there's a new tower going up close to where I work.  There are trucks there with what looks like long mono-pole tower type ....structures.  It's right by a powerline tower that's not Sprint's.  Hopefully the new tower IS Sprint!  Here's the location.

Have you emailed the city permitting group? They may be able to tell you what is going on there.

  9. True but deciding not to put 2.5GHz on every existing macro was a terrible decision that is affecting them right now.

I think this only applies in inner metro areas and dense suburbs, which is where the B41 was being refocused. B41 would do little in rural areas, but create islands of extreme speed for cows.

I'll admit, I am growing concerned about the lack of permitting evidence for expansion in the metro areas I regularly follow (DC/Tampa Bay). I'd think at least one of them would have some activity.

  10. Why? We would have a very strong third player with a killer network.

I don't think it would be anywhere as near strong as you think it would be. Sans a Chapter 11, it would still have a boatload of debt, a CDMA network and the expensive transition of 58 million customers. No real efficiency improvements would be seen for a couple of years. T-Mobile is a strong competitor and their financials are turning around. Now we just need Sprint to do the same.

We are a large enough country that we can have four strong carriers.

  11. As i am sitting in one of my favorite in the middle of the east valley to eat, right next to a tower that hasn't even seen NV 1.0 upgrades yet, i have a hard time believing Sprint is still planning on being the number one or two network in 80 percent of markets .

Not sure where you are, but I see a permit has been pulled for one of them that seems telecom-esque. Phoenix's permitting site isn't being nice right now though.

  12. And I'm not trying to start an argument here.. Just though it was an interesting nugget. T-mo seems to be stealing the bulk of the customers from the big two. I miss the days of Sprint gaining big chunks of subscribers.

I think this is where the damaged Sprint brand continues to be a drag. The new CMO needs to figure out how to get this patched up.
