  1. I think Robert is referring to an OTA for the Evo 4G LTE; Sprint had apparently originally planned to delay the release to June 10 to fix an LTE connectivity issue on the Evo, but instead they decided (probably to beat the date when people who bought the original Evo would begin rolling off-contract) to go ahead with the now-infamous May 18 date. LTE Self-Discovery may also be part of the Evo's OTA (and surely it will be coming at some point, as it is for the Galaxy Nexus), but that's not the real motivation.

  3. The Evo LTE supports 1900 and 800 CDMA (1x/EVDO), including the SMR band, but LTE is only supported on 1900.

    No 4g option?

According to the setup guide, the Evo 4G LTE ships with LTE turned on; if you have your phone set up at a Sprint Store they're supposed to switch it off in non-LTE markets (which I guess is everywhere now, technically). Long-term, of course, having LTE on by default makes sense. And from the battery life accounts so far it sounds like LTE is nowhere near the battery hog on this phone as it was on the early Verizon LTE handsets (or, for that matter, how WiMax was on the OG Evo, particularly with the original phone software).

  9. Got an email from Best Buy about an hour ago saying there was a problem with my online preorder and telling me to call. Long story short, I'm not really sure why they told me to call, but whatever magic they did changed my order status from "Backordered" to "Order in process of being fulfilled; Usually ships in 1 - 2 days." I guess if they don't ship today it'll be Tuesday at the earliest before I see the phone, Monday being a holiday and all *grumble*. The good news is that while I was on hold, I went to the Best Buy Mobile site the hold music kept telling me to visit, and it says the $50 phone freedom gift card and the $50 preorder gift card do stack.
  10. Does anyone have a good source to determine the boundaries between the various affiliate and strategic partner/Rural Alliance markets? The reason I ask... for most of the time I've been in Blacksburg I thought I was in Shentel land, but after reading in-depth on the Shentel and nTelos sites it looks like I'm actually in nTelos land; they don't break out the Blacksburg-Christiansburg market, but every single market around the area is nTelos and nTelos does have a local retail presence. Obviously since Shentel has committed to NV and nTelos hasn't as far as I know (in fact speculation has it that nTelos will deploy LTE on its AWS spectrum, not 1900 & ESMR, although nTelos isn't saying anything much about LTE at the moment) this makes a big difference.

  15. Sprint has nationwide licenses for spectrum on both 800 SMR and various 1900 PCS bands, including the PCS G block they got as compensation for Nextel giving up some of its SMR spectrum. They also have a huge chunk of nationwide spectrum at 2.5GHz through Clearwire. Even if they bought some 700 spectrum, they'd never be able to assemble a nationwide block like any of their others. I agree it'd be nice to see Sprint expand its rural coverage, but ultimately the question boils down to profits. They're much better off financially covering 90-95% of the population natively, and leaving the rest to the regional players and Verizon who have already built out and mature CDMA 850 networks. Plus I think Sprint's closer alignment with the remaining independent carriers will probably see Sprint lighting up LTE at 1900 and 800 ESMR (and maybe even the full suite including 1xAdvanced and EVDO) on their footprints too, in part to prepare for the day that Verizon shuts down CDMA and Sprint needs native or roaming LTE on its bands in those areas. But the earliest I see Sprint expanding the footprint is 2014 after the existing towers are converted for NV.

    HTC EVO 4G LTE

Pretty sure I read somewhere that someone had tested an AT&T One X and it doesn't infringe the patent (it would infringe if and only if you get a context menu when you tap on a phone number or email address, but dumping you straight into an app like the dialer or Gmail isn't covered by the 647 patent). Since the Evo runs the same software, it shouldn't either. So literally all CBP (or ICE - I'm not sure who has jurisdiction over these things) has to do is take one of each out of the box, boot it up, see if it infringes, find out it doesn't, and release the shipments. But it's the government we're talking about... so that'll take at least 24-48 hours and a team of HTC lawyers to make happen, and there'll be a team of Apple lawyers there trying to make sure this gets slowed to the hilt.

  25. Interestingly enough, if you go to this Best Buy web page you can see what appears to be inventory status for the Evo 4G LTE: http://deals.bestbuy.com/mobile/product/5087293/htc++evo+4g+lte+mobile+phone++black+sprint I changed stores a few times and it does vary (for example, Christiansburg and Roanoke said "In Stock", but Lynchburg said "Out of Stock"). On the other hand, my online pre-order just says "Backordered."
