  5. Right; the way it's presumably supposed to work is when your phone connects to that SID/NID/BSID combo, it immediately (or more frequently) scans for LTE rather than waiting for the next scheduled LTE scan. On the Evo it seems to have some effect but there doesn't seem to be any obvious way to see if an LTE scan is in progress to verify that it matters. Ideally Sprint would load this into a file that phones would cache (much like A-GPS on your phone caches the GPS ephemeris to get a quicker signal lock), so each phone wouldn't have to discover each LTE record itself; we're not talking about a huge database here, by modern smartphone standards, although it probably would be substantially bigger than the CDMA PRL. Maybe they plan to do something like this (there was some talk at the Evo's launch that they'd eventually roll out some sort of solution to LTE scanning to make it more aggressive where LTE was rolled out already), or maybe they now figure in 12-18 months they'll just crank down the scan time universally once the CDMA footprint is almost totally overlaid outside nTelosland and a few other pockets of wholesale resistance.

  10. I think the topic is worth a serious discussion, but SouthernLink's strategy here is seemingly nonsensical. Keeping a legacy public network on the air because it's convenient to the company's operations doesn't make much sense (especially when you consider nobody else in the same industry, or any other industry, feels the need to do the same), and this "national roaming" solution is implausible unless they're migrating everyone to existing CDMA/iDEN handsets or Motorola is going to custom-build a few thousand GSM/iDEN handsets for one operator. The only vaguely sensible idea is to convert SouthernLink's internal customers to an internal-only dispatch radio network on low-SMR and 900 and sell off the ESMR spectrum and external customers to Sprint, and focus on Southern's core business of being a regulated monopoly utility-plus-generator like Florida Power, APCO, Duke Energy, ConEd, etc.

  23. Technically the hypothetical UMB was CDMA's (3GPP2's) answer to LTE. WiMax and WiMax Advanced was a whole different industry grouping. LTE is an evolution (hence the "E") of the ideas behind GSM and UMTS (W-CDMA, including HSPA etc.), but airside it's yet another incompatible thing, so it's not really GSM except that pretty much everyone in the GSM camp went GSM->UMTS->LTE and in the US SIM cards have mostly been associated with GSM carriers but not with CDMA carriers (CDMA SIMs do exist but no carrier in the US uses them - even on Verizon, the user-removable SIM only does LTE and sometimes GSM roaming).
  24. By my estimation, they must have sold out of the 16GB within 1 minute. This Apple-style artificial scarcity is really annoying... Update: well, it's been bouncing back and forth between available and sold out. I haven't successfully checked out with one yet though. Update 2: finally got an order through tonight about 15 minutes ago. The trick is to just keep clicking on the "Proceed" button once you have one in your cart until it goes through.
