  1. On Verizon LG G2 SCP will not normally show any band or GCI/PCI/TAC, but LTE discovery is able to gather the info. It I force the phone network mode into LTE/GSM/UMTS and then back to Global, SCP will display the data but I can not do anything with site notes giving an error "LTE PLMN or GCI is invalid or missing; cannot edit site note", and the status bar notification won't show the band. Any idea what the issue might be? Its just my work phone so having the data isn't necessary but I've been curious why LTE discovery could get it and SCP couldn't. Until I messed with the network mode I never saw the data reported in SCP at all.

  2. Interesting, mine doesn't let me.l:

    As opposed to with Messenger:

I see what you're saying, you're right it doesn't let me reply that way. I have to click on the notification to open Hangouts and send through the app. That is a pretty nice feature.

  3. This isn't Hangouts though ... I do like Hangouts, but even Hangouts doesn't let you reply from the notification.

If I integrate my GV with Hangouts, can I send texts from my computer using the Hangouts app for Chrome?

I reply to SMS through Hangouts from the lock screen notifications all the time, I'm not sure why it won't let you. Yes you would be able to send/receive sms from any computer using Chrome with the Hangouts extension installed. You can even make or receive calls if you have a headset for your computer.

  4. Yeah, I don't think the Sense messaging app has been updated for that yet ... Guess I'll have to wait for Sense 7 for that [emoji17]

In the meantime, I downloaded the Google app "Messenger" and it's great! It obviously has full lollipop functionality, and I can respond to texts without even having to unlock! So awesome.

I've been using Hangouts for SMS for a while on every device I've had. At first I didn't care much for it, but it's grown on me. The integration with Google Voice was just a plus.

  5. I am having a heck of a time with this phone, not in establishing a connection to a tower but actually having data throughput once I make the connection. This issue has generated quite the discussion thread on the Sprint users forum but I haven't seen any mention of it here.

This always occurs when switching towers. It is never an issue when I am stable on a tower. It happens for example when leaving wifi at my house and also when switching from tower to tower while driving. From what I can tell it is not specific to a specific LTE frequency as I have seen it occur on 2500 and 800. It is not even specific to LTE because it happens on 3G as well.

Here is a screenshot and as you can see I have the white triangle that tells me I have no data connection and that warning is real because I indeed do not. The only thing that fixes this is to toggle airplane mode when it occurs or if you wait it out eventually after many minutes it usually goes away on its own.

It has been happening to my sister's new M8 as well, I haven't been able to figure out what the issue is.

  6. Finally got Lollipop today! Really posses me off that it was more than 3 months after the M8, especially since it is the same phone inside.

So far I'm loving it, but testing notifications are weird. using stock messenger app. I thought the text would appear at the top of the screen, but it doesn't. Just the icon in the status bar. Setting I can change somewhere?

I haven't tried it on a sense rom yet, but if it's like standard lollipop you can have it show a pop up type notification at the top of the screen briefly but it won't scroll through the notification bar like kit kat.

  7. For giving me if this is the wrong section to ask this, but...

I'm on one of the legacy Everything Data Family Share plans, and I would prefer to stay on it. So, I was wondering, if I buy a phone using the Sprint Easy Pay program, will I be able to keep my legacy phone-data plan, or will I be forced into a new plan?

You can keep the plan, but why wouldn't you move to one of the new plans if you aren't using your subsidy?

I take everything that Shammo says with a grain of salt... based on his comments in this article:

However, he said Wi-Fi calling was "never a top priority" for Verizon. "We built our voice platform so extensively [that] there was never a need for us to tell our customers, 'Oh, our network is not good enough so you need to go on Wi-Fi to complete your call.'"

Says the man whose company sells a Samsung Network Extender for $249.99. WiFi calling is free... so why would Verizon be in a rush for you to have that instead? (Of course, Verizon says WiFi calling is coming in Mid-2015.... I'll believe it when I see it.)

Verizon claims its VoLTE coverage is good. According to other articles I've read, Verizon's LTE footprint is essentially its 3G footprint at this point.

That network extender is just like the airave Sprint gives to qualified customers. Their LTE footprint is good, but 1X is better and more reliable for calls. I wonder if they will have a LTE femtocell made for LTE only phones, or try to rely on WiFi calling when its rolled out for poor indoor coverage situations.

  9. I think it would have been better if Google were to have charged $30 for the base price, then $5 per gb. It would have worked out to be 10gb for $80 Monthly, 15gb for $105 Monthly, 20gb for $130 Monthly, 25gb for $155 Monthly, 30gb for $180 Monthly, etc. At those rates, Google Fi would have been a bit more expensive than T-Mobile and Sprint, so to keep it from being directly competitive with them too much, while still being less expensive than Verizon.

Sprint on the other side, has really bad tablet/hotspot plans, and really ought to consider updating them to match up with the higher gb offerings for less money that even Verizon is offering. Sprint could use a Google Fi idea for giving refunds on unused data, and would do well on a simplified plan for tablet pricing, such as a base $5 Monthly fee, with each gb being priced at $5 per gb. A 5gb plan would be $30 Monthly, with others, such as 10gb/$55 Monthly, 15gb/$80 Monthly, 20gb/$105 Monthly, 25gb/$130 Monthly, 30gb/$155 Monthly, etc.

More tablet choices would be great too!

Sprint has a 30GB tablet/hotspot plan for $110 and has had it for a while now, well under your magical $5 per GB mark.

  10. The more I think about it, the more dumb this e911 becomes. Why not just force a phone to go back to CDMA when someone dials 911 when using WiFi calling? It cant be that hard to make it happen.

It already does. http://support.sprint.com/support/article/FAQs_about_Sprint_WiFi_calling/173e331f-8423-453e-93cb-4688f6a91f67#!/. I would rather have the address info available if the macro network is not available when calling emergency services.

Do emergency services work with Wi-Fi Calling?

US / Puerto Rico / US Virgin Islands: 9-1-1 service through Wi-Fi Calling may not be available or may be limited compared to traditional 9-1-1 service due to circumstances including, but not limited to, relocation of equipment, internet congestion or connection failure, loss of electrical power, delays in availability of registered location information and/or other technical problems. A 9-1-1 call will first attempt to route over a wireless network. If a 9-1-1 call doesn’t route over a wireless network within approximately 20 seconds, a 9-1-1 call may then attempt to route over Wi-Fi Calling. Always be prepared to provide your precise location information to emergency service personnel and to contact emergency services by alternate means.

  11. Has anyone else seen the Sprint personalized video bill? I had an email from Sprint yesterday with a link to it, though I couldn't find where it was on the website. I think it would be better if it went into detail about each line instead of only a couple. It said it was supposed to help customers understand new charges and pro rated amounts. Verizon has been doing this for a while for FiOS and its been pretty nice. I don't personally have a need for it, but I can see a lot of customers finding the information helpful.

  12. Alright, I'll post my idea here, before I go to sleep...

I've revised my specific rate plan from before, to now being a bit more simple, and shorter too :

15gb for $35 Monthly, 25gb for $55 Monthly, 35gb for $75 Monthly, and then 45gb for $95 Monthly, with Additional Data after 95gb being $1 for every 1gb. Overage rates within the sliding scale, if chosen not to automatically adjust to the next rate level, remains at $5 for every 1 gb.

Now for the unlimited data idea I mentioned, $90 Monthly with complete tethering included, then data stash/rollover options at :

$75 for 15gb, $60 for 10gb, and $45 for 5gb, with the starter data being three times that of the monthly data rate plan chosen (45gb/$75, 30gb/$60, 15gb/$45)

I don't see those rates being viable. More than 95% of users would be on the cheapest plan with 15GB for only $35.

  13. That sure sounds like an expensive project that isn't really needed. A nationwide broadband network only to be used for public safety, ugh! such a waste of tax dollars.

I'm all for cutting costs, but if done correctly it could end up very useful to the public.

  14. Yeah, agreed, the Sprint network has gotten really good in a lot of places.  Woo hoo!

But how do you "forget" to use Wi-Fi at home?  You should almost never turn off Wi-Fi.  Rather, you configure your device once for each trusted network -- after that, it should automatically connect to only those trusted networks.  I pull into my driveway and, boom, my handset is already off LTE and on one of my two home Wi-Fi SSIDs.

Consider this a public service announcement.  Everyone, there is little reason if you have your own secure Wi-Fi network that you should not be using it.  Please do not unnecessarily increase the load on the macro network while at home.  Each bit of Wi-Fi offloading may be small, but it adds up and helps maintain capacity for truly mobile users.

    AJ

I turn WiFi off when I leave for work. I do home delivery and find that leaving it on causes a larger than normal battery drain by having it scan all the time driving all over the city. However, if I do forget to turn it back on when I get home I usually remember when I pick up my phone. LTE is great, but I would never purposely use it over my home ISP as it really can't compare with fios.

  15. For anyone familiar with VoLTE...will voice calls still work the same with an extremely weak LTE signal as it would with a strong LTE signal? Or will we see degraded voice quality?

I ask this because I've read of people missing phone calls through eCSFB (I know both are nowhere near the same thing) when their phone holds on to a weak LTE signal. B41 is still able to send and receive texts/calls just fine even when it sits at -128 dBm on my phone (internet is just extremely slow). Will a VoLTE phone call work as well with this weak of a signal?

Using a LG G2 on Verizon, the VoLTE call will usually drop when the signal gets that low, just as I start to have problems on Sprint or Verizon CDMA when the signal gets much below -105. The difference I have noticed is, on CDMA the call will start to garble a bit but stay connected while on VoLTE the call will stay clear and then drop without much warning.

  16. I'm sure everyone remembers the free night and weekend minutes we had years ago. This morning I was thinking what if a carrier took that same idea but instead made for it data. I think that if a carrier was able to implement this that it would be big and a game changer. What do you guys think?

It would turn out poorly for carriers. That's prime time to stream video, and if it's not being counted against metered plans then I bet the networks would get hammered even more during those times.

  17. You are right about the over two years part. I was considering that aspect, but then realized I could get an extension to that at the two year point, with a new phone subsidy for a new device, as I'm hoping by the 4k display screens will be available, along with carrier aggregation and VoLTE being pretty much standard and widely available.

The total plan cost is always going to be similar, and probably in favor of the new plans slightly unless you happen to find a really good deal (free or really cheap) on a subsidized phone. Something to keep in mind though, is Sprint also has sale prices on easy pay purchased phones as well. I recently bought a HTC One M8 for my sister on easy pay and it was heavily discounted. The original price of the M8 was $650 and they offered a $322 discount for buying with easy pay and also later a $50 loyalty bill credit for upgrading that line using easy pay. Your plan is $20 higher per month because of the subsidy, if you add in the upfront cost of the phone and you are almost always paying the full price or in your case slightly more for the device.

  18.

The $60 unlimited plan with the Nexus 6, would have cost more than the plan I got with the $200 subsidy, though there wouldn't have been an upfront cost, a plus to that. However there isn't an unlimited data guarantee with it, unlike the My Way plan and the Framily (at least I heard Framily had it, with unlimited data added on)

Unlimited my way with the $200 subsidized nexus 6 is still more over two years than the $60 unlimited plan and using easy pay ( $2120 vs $2090). I wouldn't put too much effort into finding a legacy plan that had the unlimited data for life guarantee. Nothing prevents them from jacking up the price, just that you can keep paying for an unlimited data plan.

  19. Your posts are very long and hard to get through. From what I gather you are on unlimited my way and purchased a $200 subsidy discounted phone, nexus 6 I think it was. You could have went with the $50 (iPhone) or $60 unlimited plan and either bought a much cheaper phone on easy pay or leased one with no down payment.

On the extreme end, you could have gotten the sharp aquos crystal for $5 a month on easy pay since it was on sale and pay $1560 over two years vs $2120 on unlimited my way with that nexus 6. Or you could have leased an iPhone 6 for a total two year cost of $1680 with $0 down up front.

You could have also went with a much cheaper mvno on Sprint such as boost, virgin, republic etc. Something to keep in mind, if you do manage to switch to framily you will pay an extra $15 a month service charge for having that subsidized phone on a non subsidy plan.

  20. I really don't know why you're complaining that you couldn't scam your way into a framily plan. The code sharing was likely one of the main reason that the plan was discontinued in the first place. It was intended for friends and family, hence the name.

I don't know how others are doing it, but I asked about this in the past and I was told the only way to get new accounts on an existing framily was to add a line on some ones account under framily and then do a transfer of liability to make the new account.

If money is so tight, you could have easily picked a cheaper device with a cheaper plan option. Framily probably wouldn't be a good idea for some one in your position anyway. If you got dumped, could you handle your bill going up by $30 unexpectedly?
