  1. I sure appreciate sharing your info and thoughts.  My issue certainly isn't with you.

Let's say I pay $649 plus tax for the phone through HTC, without financing.

The phone I just paid in full for comes SIM locked, and I have to go through unlocking it myself.

While the non-Sprint firmware specific phones are all unlocked and can be used basically on any network.

Apologies, my astonishment isn't directed at you.

If you purchase a sprint specific model directly from htc then it will be locked to sprint, this is a sprint issue not an htc issue.  If you are intending on using it on sprint then the sprint model is what you want which can also be unlocked to be used on any other network if so desired but if you don't care to activate it on sprint then just get the unlocked version which will work on any other carrier except sprint.

    edit:

no different that buying a galaxy or iphone where all the models have the same hardware just software locked to each specific carrier if you bought it directly from samsung or apple with carrier branding.

    edit #2:

No need to apologies, I understand where you are coming from.  The reality is that we have come a long way where the majority of flagship devices are all basically shipping with the same hardware supporting just about every band available with the only differences being the software.  That alone is amazing, it saves oem's additional over head from having to make hardware specific models per carrier plus a carrier free version and it gives consumers more options as well.

  2. To clarify; if I purchase this phone at full price, all upfront, I'm still relegated to a Sprint locked device?

    That is crazy

Not sure what their exact policy is when it comes to purchasing outright but I'm pretty sure they will unlock it for you at some point.  Regardless, sim unlocking it yourself is a relatively easy process.

  3. This device is still getting high marks after a month of release.

This will be my next phone if I don't care for the Pixel 2 XL.

I'm only interested in unlocked phones.  I know there is a "Sprint" version, is that only for firmware updates?  Hardware-wise, are all U11's the same?

Although I've been with Sprint for 17+ years, I do not want to purchase a phone that is locked to Sprint.

The solar red looks pretty hot.  Anyone on the thread have it?

Yes, the hardware is the same.  The sprint version is off course locked to sprint but the process to unlock it is relatively easy.  Keep in mind that even though the hardware is the same you won't be able to purchase the unlocked version to activate on sprint.

  4. So how is this phone over all now that's it been out for a little bit? I am looking to upgrade from my LG G5 and was considering the U11 or LG G6.

You can't really go wrong with either.

  5. Anyone know HTC's history with software updates? I've never owned an HTC device, but this one seems pretty decent. I'm thinking of picking one up to be my 2nd device. This LG G6 is awful.

HTC has always been pretty decent with updates, especially more so recently.

  6. Yeah but the problem is that the entire back light will stay on, no way this can be good for battery life.

  7. Any ideas on what was in the update?

    "System enhancements"

    *rolleyes*

Seems that video stability has improved exponentially when recording in 4k, at least it seems that way to me.

  8. So what exactly did you guys do to fix it? I got the email about a week and a half ago telling me it was wrong, so I went in and re-entered the MEID. And I just got another email today saying "Your MEID number is either, corrupted due to a form error, not enough numbers (must have 18 numbers), or your number is a duplicate." I'm gonna put the number in again but if I don't get to redeem these Dots because of this error, I'm gonna be rather upset.

It was an issue on their end, no matter how many times you put the corrected meid, once you left the screen and came back it had the same error as before.  Seems like they fixed it though, I went back in yesterday and updated my meid and the correct number was still there after I exited and came back to it.

I get your point. Just you dont get my point. Every time that I have a free time outside my home I cant use my phone data beacause is very slow. I can't download even a application to my device. Yesterday I was at the beach and I tried to use Youtube to play cartoons videos to my kid and guess what? Noup the video stuck loading forever. All the time that I want to use my phone for something that involves data it does not work. I am paying for something that does not work the majority of the time. I don't need a 20mbs connection. I just need a connection that works for the basics. Snapchat? The snaps stay loading forever. Instagram? The images dont load. Is not just me. Are you serious that here most of the time Edvo is much faster than LTE. I am tired. I just use my wifi all the time because is the only solution and wait for the lease to end and switch.

For sprint customers that can be very frustrating and as much time as I spend in the region I can empathize with you.  If you are in a lease, I am pretty sure att and maybe even tmobile may have a buyout option for new customers coming from a competitor.  One of my buddies just switched to att earlier this week due to the same issues and they offered to buy out his lease on his s8+.  So I think switching is much easier now than ever before if you needed too.  So yeah, I would suggest you give them a call to see what options you might have.  Better than spending the next 9 months being frustrated.

  10. Hmm I feel dumb but maybe not, just realized the S8+ has a flash on the front camera. Never seen anything on reviews about it, saw the option earlier and used it amazing. I imagine that goes for the S8 as well, but as I said I knew nothing about it.

Yeah, lots of phones have that feature, they just use the screen as a flash, it works great most of the times.

  11. How is the RF performance for you guys? It's significantly worse than my s7. Thinking of returning it or seeing if HTC will give me a replacement.

Its been fantastic for me so far.

  12. My echo dots are being processed. I just got an email because I put in the wrong MEID. At least I know something is going on.

Thanks for the heads up, I got the same email as well but it was in my spam folder.  I would have never known.

  13. Must be nice. The fastest I've seen is in the 50s. The bottom two are from Shentel 2xca. Next up is in Tysons Corner with 3xca. I killed the app on the rest of the tests on Saturday so it wouldn't hurt Sprint's score since they were lower. The others are on my brothers fios. The top one was a bad comcast server. 91dc98386184f25d3c7b577c05a54d1a.jpg

Yeah, I posted about it a month and a half or so ago in another thread.  One day I was sitting in front of my local publix grocery store and while I was sitting in the car I needed to download some files for work which were fairly large and I couldn't really wait to get home.  Once I hit download, it was done in just a few seconds.  I figured something must have glitched out because I just wasn't expecting it to download so fast.  So I checked the download and everything was there.  So I told myself to run a speedtest and I couldn't believe my eyes, 203.44mb down on lte., needless to say I was shocked.   This was on my s8+

  14. Definitely the U 11 is a keeper. 199cac33791248edf799e23bfec36bb6.jpg

  15. So wait, buying the U11 unlocked from HTC.com will actually work just fine on Sprint then?

    NO!!!!

Hardware is exactly the same but it won't activate on sprint network, the esn/imei won't be whitelisted.

  16. What I wanna know is what benefit was there for Sprint being the Exclusive carrier partner for the U11 if we end up getting screwed out of all the best colorways for the phone?? Can't get Solar Red or Amazing Silver.

Well for one, you could potentially get a much better deal going through sprint.  Also, if there is any issues with your device you could probably get a much faster turnaround time dealing with sprint compared to other third party retailers or even with htc.

  17. It's only available for those that signed up for the Bixby beta.

Apparently the benefit of Bixby is that it simulates screen touches when launching apps. So it might have greater integration with apps without a whole bunch of API nonsense.

Someone on the Android subreddit posted this video showing them launching a song and the app opens, then types in what you want, and then plays. It's slower than Google Assistant though.

Yeah I signed up sometime last week. I just set it up and for the most part I still prefer Google now but I'll keep trying it for the next few days to see how it goes.

  18. You can say that again. The last time I was in the USVI (about 2 years ago) getting a signal wasn't the problem, speeds were.

Yeah, at any given moment I would be lucky if I can get .5mb to .7mb down while on lte but the crazy part is that on 3g I get a reliable 1.5mb to 2.2mb down no matter the time of day regardless of location.  So when I am not on wifi, I am actually on 3g because its faster and more reliable than lte.  AT&T though, averaging 30mb to 40mb down.

  19. So is the sku of the HTC u11 the same for the Sprint/unlocked variants? Is it simply a firmware limit not hardware? I want the solar red for a line on my account. But unsure if it will be compatible with out flashing it first. Best case scenario.

The hardware is the same but the sprint model has different software.  The only issue I see is that the unlocked version may not work on sprints network because the esn/imei isn't in their database and will not activate.  So flashing the sprint official software probably won't make any difference.

  20. Just saw that Sprint has permanently dropped the price of the HTC 10 to $10/month or $240 full price!

Yep, heard about this a few days ago. Easily the best deal on any smartphone on the market right now.

  21. Well I knew that, I just assumed that the increased transmit power would result in improved signal strength. I guess if that isn't the catalyst to the improved signal strength I'm seeing, then we can thank the new Qualcomm radio and glass body instead of aluminum.

Materials could easily make a difference. For example, the HTC A9 that I tested had a polycarbonate body and had much better RF performance than the retail unit that had an aluminum body.
