  1. Parent company DT has to do something to make this under-performing carrier worth their time and money. I was surprised after the merger failure that they didn't just announce that they were going to close T-Mobile USA down. Instead they are finally putting money into fixing it.

     

    You got to also remember that t-mobile got a "break up fee" of $3 billion from att being that the merger didn't go through, so thats where that money is coming from I would think.

    This part makes no sense to me at all, and makes me not want to believe anything this person is saying. Now I could be wrong but why would he say "especially in the face of apple's a6 or whatever they shove in the ip5"? Doesn't Samsung manufacture the soc's in the iphones? So how could they not know whats going in the ip5? How can he say that Samsung wants to stomp out the competitors cpu when they are the very ones thats going to be manufacturing that very same cpu?

    And I wouldn't nearly say the GN is near its EOL. I'll be a solid phone choice for a while at least, especially with it being one of the first to get Jelly Bean when its released.

     

    Thats my issue too, I am getting two evolte's when they are available but I also need to open up a third line and I am not sure if I should get a gnex or wait for the s3 to come out. Obviously the gnex will have newer updates and newer updated custom roms compared to the s3 but I have a feeling the s3 will have beast like specs thats gonna make me want to wait it out.

    Yes they can afford too but why would they if its not going to help their bottom line? They are a business like any other business and their purpose is to be as profitable as they can be and when it comes to cutting costs labor is one area that almost always gets looked at first. There aren't many businesses out there that are willing to pay more than they have too when it comes to anything. It really does suck but thats simply the world we live in.

  5. My only issue is the sponsor section. I understand the costs associated with the website are large but it just seems like it really goes against what S4GRU is about by sharing "better" information with those that can pay for it and "the rest" of information for those that can't. I really wish there was a way to change that.

     

    Well what else do you suggest? The information thats available in the sponsor section is something Robert doesn't even have to do. Most of us who donated had already done so before there was even a sponsor section. I can't speak for anyone else but when I donate I don't do so to get benefits from this site I donate to say thank you S4GRU for what you are doing for the geek inside me and when S4GRU wants to say you are very welcome, how else are they suppose to do that other than giving us something exclusive? In either case though, this website has a wealth of information that can be accessed with out having to donate a single penny.

    It was a damn good run at that, no modern phone has had that kind of shelf life other than the iphone. I was on another site about a year ago and there was a discussion that sprint would eol the evo4g when the evo3d came out. I was like why should they? This phone is simply way to iconic and they will ride the evo4g wave into 2012. I wish I could find that old thread, not even sure what site it was on.

  7. And HTC puts out phones made of material that is easily scratched and "allows" people to unlock the bootloader but tracks it and doesn't give full s-off. We will see how the EVO LTE fares compared to the rest of the flagships. Muffinman, you're probably right that performance will probably be seen by the end user as approximately the same, but there are other things like battery life, screen tech and 800LTE connectivity that can elevate them past the EVO.

     

    True but so far reviewers are saying that the screen on the one x (same screen as the evolte) is the best screen they have ever seen on a cell phone, not to mention that the evolte will have a larger battery anyway and by the time 800lte connectivity is available we will be too busy drooling over phones coming out in 2014.

    Everything gets lapped a couple months later for the most part but in either case though I don't think moto or samsung will be that far ahead of htc when they release their flagship devices. Besides, at this point all these superphones are so capable already that an extra core here or there or an extra jump in a benchmark result will have little effect on real world usage.

  9. BUT selling 1 phone is 100x better than selling 0 phone...least with 1 sell you will have a customer making money off them from day 1...

     

    I agree but when you are dealing with a product that is as hot as the iphone, they wont have a problem telling you no because they can always find someone else to sell it to. This reminds me of when I used to be a honda car salesman back in the day. When the honda s-2000 first came out the msrp was about $32k with no options. These cars were selling like crazy and our average selling price was actually at around $37k with no options. People were willing to pay well over retail just to get one and there were many times we simply told customers no because we knew that someone else would walk in and pay the higher price. Now I know this isn't a perfect example but the point is businesses will tell customers no if they know they can be profitable elsewhere especially if the demand is there. Its just like the iphone, they are moving iphone inventory like crazy and as long as people keep buying these things like they are then sprint would have absolutely no reason to sell you one for the simple fact that someone else will come in right after you and sign a contract to get it. Again though, its not always about what they can get now, with these types of businesses long term cash flow in a 2 year contract is far more beneficial than a short term sale that isn't tied to a contract.

Because Sprint HAS to fulfill the iPhone contract they signed...this and only this is the reason why I thought they would be encouraged to sell them off contract full price...During the first part of the contract they are recouping the subsidy anyway so I dont see how its that bad of a deal in the end...

     

    Just buying it full pop with no contract means that there is no commitment. Not only do they need to full fill their agreement with apple but they also have other bills to pay to stay in business. If I sign a two year contract not only will they recoup the cost of the phone but they will then turn a reasonable profit and if I leave before my contract is up then I will pay an ETF which goes towards lost revenues from terminating the contract early. If I just buy one off contract then guess what, that iphone isn't tied to any ETF or contract which makes that sale potentially not profitable. An iphone sale off contract doesn't guarantee anything other that the sale price of the phone ($600 for example) which is probably what sprint paid apple for the same phone. The same phone on contract gets them $2,119 (assuming the $79.99 plan) over two years not including additional fees. So they definitely have more incentive to sell you on contract versus off.

    And thats probably why sprints network went to shit a few months after the evo was released. There really are a lot of evo 4g's out there, then add iphone 4's and 4s's and we can really see how sprints network took a dump so quickly.

    just dont understand why you they wouldn't allow someone to come in and pay full price for any device...what do they lose in that situation?....seems they have more to gain from selling it at full price than not. imho

     

    Remember, they make their money on contracts not phones. At full pop I highly doubt sprint makes any profit at all, at best they may break even. Even if they make a few bucks per unit it still won't be enough to cover overhead costs so thats why contracts are important. Thats probably why other retailers like bestbuy and radioshack raise their prices so if someone wanted to buy one off contract they can atleast make their money upfront since they will lose out on signing them up for a contract. So why should I sell it to you off contract when I can sell it to other people on a contract which guarantees me significantly more cash flow? They have no incentive at full price.

  13. I hit 12mbps a few weeks ago, there is a tower a few hundred feet away from me that I always get decent speeds from but its never been that fast. Its usually around 6 to 9 but it was consistently hitting 12.

    Oh yeah, the evo 4g was the best selling phone ever on sprint by a wide margin. I don't know how many iphones sprint has sold but the evo is way too iconic of a name for sprint to not capitalize on, thats why I was 100% confident that sprint was gonna use the evo name in some form with their version of the one x.
