Actually, Cingular was still running a remnant of TDMA subscribers themselves when they took over AT&T wireless. But that merger happened in October 2004. The shutdown of TDMA didn't happen until 2007 or 2008. I had a friend on TDMA AT&T wireless up until 4 months before the TDMA shutdown when she finally migrated to GSM
Really? I think that might have been by market. I remember here in my area, the notices went out and the network was shutdown/forced migration very rapidly.

Interesting...which means they could potentially roll all the Metro customers to Straight Talk, and capture that spectrum for other usage.
On another note, does anyone remember the AT&T Wireless and Cingular takeover back in the day? At that time, AT&T was running a TDMA network natively on their 800mhz (if I remember correctly), and building out a GSM network using their 1900mhz spectrum. When Cingular took over, they basically notified all AT&T Wireless customers that their TDMA devices would be dead in the water at date XXXX.
I can see something like that happening here.

Report back should you find any sites live with LTE. Would love to update our maps accordingly. Thanks!
Robert
Will do, if they are live...lol.
Otherwise I'll get kickass 3G speeds

I'm still stuck at a whopping .2-.4 Mbps not much improvement here in jersey, but if I go east a bit from here it's pretty nice where the 3G towers have been upgraded. I get around 1 mbps man do I miss T-Mobile surprisingly enough.
They actually have completed a block of towers in Central Jersey with both NV and LTE, I believe...I'm going to do some drive testing this weekend if I get a chance. I just got my hands on an LG Viper to test with.

Ahh, makes sense now.

I hope that 37,000 tower modernization includes more 3G... The press release on this mentioned, in the end, that Tmobile launched HSPA+42 in Hattiesburg, MS (my location). True? Yep. There are either 1 or 2 towers on the west side of town that have been upgraded. The truth? They deployed it to "midtown hattiesburg. I live in the "Avenues", the most popular historic area in town and adjacent to downtown. The upgrade is completely absent in downtown hattiesburg and most of hattiesburg proper. The fall from this to 2G is also pretty stark once you're 5 miles out of town. Tmobile has taken this approach in all MS cities where its deployed HSPA+.... Just upgrade a tower or two (3 in our capitol, Jackson) and add it to the coverage list.
While Sprint's native network is by no means the best here, its all 3G in the areas I frequent and 3G roaming is enabled in most places.
I wonder..... is the 4 billion pricetag of tmobile's modernization accurate?
I had to snicker when I heard the comment made that T-Mobile would be the first to deploy multi-mode components.
But that being said, 4 billion sounds about right if you're reusing some equipment and not deploying backhaul.

These Multi-monde chipset will support GSM,UTMS,EV and LTE TD and FD on the same chip. So I will be able to use my sprint phone anywhere in the world and on any carrier?
No, but you would be able to CDMA eSMR, CDMA PCS, TDD-LTE and FDD-LTE, which would be kickass!
-
Coffee infusion! That is the biggest disadvantage that hindered the growth of CDMA/EVDO.
Lol...uh huh
-
Good news for us, would make our devices support LTE on native Sprint, and in Clearwire hotspot areas as well.
Curious if we would have to pay additional for that access?
-
That's what I thought too. But I don't think the next iPhone will be previewed at WWDC. Just iOS 6.
Sent from my Joshs EVO Shift using Forum Runner
Yeah, I have a feeling the new iPhone won't be seen/leaked till late August, Sept.
-
I don't either, except for the fact that every other carrier in the US is transitioning over to it. T-Mobile's HSPA+ network is already faster in some areas than at&t & VZW, and the next step is to go to HSPA+84.
I'm assuming more capacity? Or just future proofing?
-
Not if the same chip handles both CDMA voice and EV-DO.
Of course *head smack* need more coffee

Yes. For Chicago Sprint customers, your phone will check the standard PCS channels first. If it cannot find any PCS channels it will check the 800SMR band before roaming. It will also check the PCS band for EVDO data when connected on the SMR. Kinda dumb if you ask me, if PCS EVDO was available then you wouldn't be on SMR for voice in the first place. Just wasted battery looking for a EV signal.
This is only on the 21xxx PRLs on 800SMR 1XA capable phones, by the way.
If PCS EVO was available, and an SMR voice was too, wouldn't you technically be able to do sim v/d? Unless the device is connecting to only one "connection" at a time.
-
Thanks. And actually that is 21087. The first real world PRL that has an ACQ record for 800SMR! I see it attached to SID 22439 in the NY Geo area.
So this will "see" 800mhz CDMA sites?

Here is another concept gallery of Liquidmetal iPhone concepts.
http://www.cultofmac...oncept-gallery/
This looks really cool.
Beautiful looking concept!
I just hate how so much space gets wasted. I don't want to make this a "VS" tread, but the leaked images of the GS3 show that Samsung got it right.

As I said I like to start from the basic building blocks of Android and set up my own, personalized interface. Avoid the system bogging junk, and stick to what I want to use and that's it. Some people like to jump right in to Sense and it works for them. Some people like to fit in the mold that Apple has released. To each his own.
I've always been a one man wolfpack. I loathe when I am told what to like and what widgets I should use. AOSP works for me.
And you're the %1 my friend...literally

I'm not so sure they can stuff good LTE antenna's in the current form factor, although I could be wrong seeing that rumors going both ways have been posted around the internet.
True, and I'll take a larger form factor. My biggest pet peeve with the current design is the wasted space. I want a larger screen, and less plastics.
-
T-Mobile claims their 4G is so fast. Did you notice that they tested their 4G Smartphone with Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon iPhone 4S? The iPhone 4S doesn't even use 4G Technology. How misleading is that?
yeah but most people will not notice that...they see 4G and run with it.
Hell, I'd wager 2/3 of the people currently using the 4S or 4 think they have a true "4G" phone.
-
I'd buy the iPhone (whatever #), if it had a larger screen. I'm hoping for at least a 4" screen, same form factor, and same set of aftermarket accessories.
One of the guys in my office has one of those battery pack cases which adds about 3/4" on top and bottom of device, and about a full day of battery life on top of the stock battery.
-
Yep, bring your own device is a huge talking point these days, and every customer that I've spoken to has some form of it in motion now.
Makes sense from a cost perspective as well.
-
What we need are more quarters like this...all the pain points are identified, and the fix actions are being created.
By mid 2013 I think Sprint will be in a great position, just need to get done with 2012.

I'd get the EVO LTE...that's after using it for a while. The whole ASOP thing really is overrated in my opinion, and I find that stock Android is kinda meh at best. I actually applaud to work that Samsung and HTC put into making their devices more user friendly out of the box.
I was shopping for a smartphone for my girlfriend (got her to switch from T-Mobile to Sprint), and got her the iPhone 4S instead of Android, and have no regrets.

Here in the city it is fine as long as you are sitting in one place. When it's warmer outside, I eat lunch outside in the courtyard or in the park nearby with my girl, and it's great having the high speed network for Youtube, etc.
That being said, having full 4G service at home is awesome, 7-10mbps to supplement my 25/25mbps from Verizon Fios!

So I was browsing the Sprint Website this morning and I noticed that they still offer 6 phones that are on the Nextel network. What is Sprint thinking? Anyone care to explain that logic?
I'm assuming they are for those last ditch customers who need the iDEN service...but I don't think the retail channel sells them anymore. Could be wrong though, have to find out.

Yeah something like that. I just thought it was a such smaller time period.
