  1. TMO continues to have the advantage of being able to re-use att phones.

While coming to sprint mostly requires completely new phones, aside from nexus 5 and maybe a few others.

I think a lot of people here and elsewhere disregard how important that advantage can be.

Maybe gsm sucks, maybe it don't, but at least its the standard pretty much everywhere except sprint/vz.

Sprint and vz will always be disadvantaged when pulling customers from other carriers because of this.

I agree its a huge advantage. It allows people on AT&T to test out the Tmobile network with minimal investment. Unhappy with AT&T? Pop in the Tmobile $30 walmart plan for a month to see if the coverage is good enough or not.

As Sprint tries to direct people to BYOD or easy pay, does it make sense, or is it even possible, to welcome in Verizon branded phones that are compatible with the network?

    Excellent

I doubt that a handset dubbed "Crystal" is going to fare particularly well in drop tests -- for any user, young or old.

Well phones of even the same standard rectangle design + bezel vary wildly in how well they survive a drop. I believe it was the Nexus 4 that would crack if a slight breeze blew into the room. Of course they addressed that with the Nexus 5.

The lack of bezel makes me assume it will be more susceptible to cracks than your standard phone, but the question is how much so.

I think surviving a 4 foot drop on carpet would be important, because in my person experience whenever I drop my phone it's always by my bed.

I'm sure a reiew site will do all those drop tests. It will help me decide if I should recommend him to get this phone, or pay more for the nexus 5.

  3. wow that was short...

    No more 30 day period

Thats surprising. Does it mean too many people were trying it and not liking the service.

First this a retention offer for existing customer in good standing, not an offer for new subs.

Absolutely not true. My mom jumped out of Sprint last month into that plan. She never used more than 500mb a month, so now shes saving money and getting actual phone service. I was the one that got her into Sprint originally, but since Sprint hasnt managed to give Fresno NV 1.0, never mind LTE, she had enough.

  4. The excitement is killing me. I want my dad to switch h from this Everything Data 1500 plan already. I'm ready for yearly upgrades. Sadly Framily wasn't saving him any money.

Yup, Im on that same plan because Framily would have been a price hike for us.

I'd love to see Sprint throw in some of the fun tmobile stuff like free international texting.

And maybe the new CEO, due to his personal background, will look at the rates Sprint charges for calls in/to Latin America and take a machete to them.

  5. I just fell out of my chair.

Well hes saying exactly what Ive been saying Sprint should be saying...

"We're going to change our plans to make sure they are simple and attractive and make sure every customer in America thinks twice about signing up to a competitor," he said, adding that "very disruptive" rate places are coming next week, and Sprint will react quickly to bring competitive offers to potential customers.

"When you have a great network, you don’t have to compete on price," the Brightstar Corp founder added. "When your network is behind, unfortunately you have to compete on value and price."

    http://www.lightreading.com/mobile/4g-lte/sprint-ceo-price-cuts-first-best-network-next-/d/d-id/710357?

I always said that "pardon our dust" should have been followed with "heres $10 off for your understanding."

  6. Nope. We have no idea. The only thing that has been "leaked" to the public is design and size. I've looked all over the interwebs and haven't found a single piece of information mentioning b41. My assumption, which is probably right, is that it will have spark. It would be a big loss for them not to have spark especially if sprint really gets into pushing the new "spark" network.

edit: that and I'll be livid. I would switch to android because of that.

Isnt 41 a big deal in other countries? Even if Sprint alone isnt enough to convnince Apple, surely the global market is

  7. I meant to say when Vizio came out they were kind of low rent, ugly, etc... today of course they're nothing like they used to be

That may be true (I dont know), but theyre still cheaper today than the long-standing competitors, and they are of similar quality.

However, as Robert pointed out, it's not the same, aside from the fact that disruptive entrants into an industryr esult in lower prices.

  8. Yeah, why on earth would I pay $250 for a 9 month old phone with a 2-Year contract?

[emoji1] just busting your chops a little bit.

I typically always look for phones that are 6-9 months old and had the best specs at the time they launched. By doing this, I'm able to have damn close to top end handsets at about half the list price.

Usually I buy them 2nd hand, but in this case I got very lucky with the Microcenter flash sale and got one brand new.

It just seems to good to be true. That was a one-off deal?

I ask because my dad needs a new phone, and my sister used his upgrade.

Hes using a Moto Photon - Wimax.

I was thinking Nexus 5 but Im worried the new one will be out in 2 months.

  9.

Similar thing happened to TV set manufacturers. Vizio, and other dodgy brands, showed up with rock bottom pricing, and after a couple of years of price cuts put the screws on TV makers like Sony and other higher priced brands, some of whom are barely surviving today.

    Uh what?

Vizeio is a high quality brand that brought low prixes with good products. Read their reviews.. Dodgy? Please.

Youve just destroyed your point. Vizio came in and proved that they could make a good profit with low prices and high quality. It was a huge gain for the consumer. I think theyre now #1 or #2 TV seller in the US.

  10.  The people on T-Mobile must never travel.

No, the average american does not travel.

The average american spends most of their life within 20 miles of their home. What the coverage is like in bumbleville Alabama is of no significance to someone living in Kansas. What the network is like 40 miles out of NYC doesnt matter to Mr. Brooklyn.

And when they do travel, they go to LA, NYC or Orlando.

Tmobile has a weak rural network. Everyone knows that. The fact that theyre doing so well is because for most people, it doesnt matter.

Mind you, Im on Sprint precisely because a large (roaming) network DOES matter to me. It also matters to people like Robert, who travel for work all the time. So theres certainly value in having an expansive network. That doesnt mean you cant be very successful NOT serving that market.

I always thought those Verizon 4G network map ads were ridiculous.

You want maps that matter to people? Show and compare coverage in their home and work area codes. A half acre dead spot by my favorite lunch deli is a problem. 100,000 acres of dead spot in west virginia are of no significance to me.

  11. RE: Stocks

Im not sure if its a good time to jump in guys. Sprint was really overvalued because of the merger talk. The current price is still above where they were 2-3 years ago.

The analysts expect that Sprint needs to fight back with pricing. I agree, Ive said Framily was a ripoff since day 1. Right now, Sprint is the most expensive provider in many configurations, but is not providing the best network.

So lets say Sprint opens next week with new lower prices. Great for us.

    Not great for stock.

Disclaimer: I'm not a financial specialist at all.

  12. I have no opinions on Hesse but Im very glad this merger is over.

Honestly, I dont know how they thought they could get past the feds.

Its obvious to everyone that the tmobile gimmicks have done more to improve the wireless industry than anything else in the past 5 years. I dont care if you think its an unsustainable business practice, you hate their CEO, or you dislike the color; for the consumer, it's been golden. Lower prices, new options and (gasp) competition rather than collusion.

A merger would have killed that.
