  1. The NV base stations don't need to be inside air conditioned hut's, so why put them in one?

Not sure if you read what I wrote all the way, T-mobile also usually don't have there equipment in a building either (around the towers that I have been to in my area). so this has NOTHING to to with Sprint's "NV".

Maybe because it's a rough neighborhood? I'm sure NV gear has some sort of value on the black market (copper, precious metals, etc) Just my guess.

I am not in a rough neighborhood at all, its far from that. IF it was a rough neighborhood all the carriers on that tower would be in a building and locked if that was the case (most likely). I mean yea there is a fence but anyone who really wants to steal something or mess with something could jump a fence lol.

  2. Well looks like Verizon is going fast to the tower by me that I mentioned before, they got the building up and ready to go, that didnt take long!! One thing I never understood, MOST places AT&T and Verizon use buildings for shelter there equipment but Sprint and T-mobile dont unless its a big building shared with others, at least in MY area its what I have noticed. Does AT&T and Verizon have more equipment then T-mobile and Sprint that they need a building (doubt it) or is it just because they have the money to build a building? (well prefabricated). That part of carriers I dont know much about. Anyone know why this may be?

  3. If one wanted to get his hands on retired WiMax hardware, how would that be accomplished? My particular interest would be a couple of or a few sector antennas, not the radios themselves.

    Same here!!

Probably one of the outfits that will be hired for decomissioning sometime later this year or next year.

Las Vegas and Portland area would be the major ones to look at since those Motorola markets will be 100% ripped out and replaced unlike the Huawei and Samsung markets which will predominately stay for a long time (Samsung) or for some time (Huawei one by one until they're all gone).

    Slow death!! just kidding

  4. I also have to chime in and agree with you that VZW gets preferential treatment the majority of the time, and people gladly allow it.  <_<

Must be well today, I could not believe what I saw today at the tower site where VZW is going in my area, Verizon left the gates wide open to the tower today. Here no one is around and someone could go in there and either mess with equipment or climb the tower and get hurt!! I called our local cops to have someone come lock it but government at its finest "we are not worried about it, it can stay open" is what I heard from the 911 center (we dont have any other numbers to call for issues after hours). I told them I was concerned that someone could get hurt, and the person laughed. I went back up there around 9 when its almost dark out and nothing was done to it so I closed it (but didnt lock it in case they might come back during the night). All because its Verizon they dont care what they do I guess. (Still who leaves a gate to a tower wide open with no one around for hours? In a city near downtown?) We dont have a lot of issues with vandals or theft in my area but I was just a concerned citizen and I think I did the right thing.

  5. Thanks AJ for your clarification.  I think if people rose to the challenge and donated $5-$25 per month on recurring, we would do very well to cover our expenses.  Since most will not rise up and give $5 per month, it would be very appreciated for those who are willing to donate a greater amount recurring.  We have 2 or 3 members who do recurring donations of $20+ per month.

The bottom line is we will take whatever you guys are willing to give.  One time lump sum donations are good.  We have been good stewards and stretch those out for months and months.  But monthly recurring donations are great as they make the revenue stream steady and increase the chances of keeping S4GRU more sustainable.

So whatever you guys are willing to give, occasional lump sums, small or moderate monthly donations, it all works out.  Thanks to you all for keeping S4GRU viable for four years.  It's been unbelievable and we are getting excited again with the new Masa+Marcelo Sprint Next Generation Network about to get rolling.

Exciting times are here again!  And S4GRU will be there with you all, discovering info and sharing it with our members.  Thanks!

    Robert

Ill do what I can!! I am excited to see what will happen next and make the other 3 get blown by a Sprint #1 network!!!!

  6. Not exactly what you're looking for, but probably as close as we can get in the near future:  http://specmap.sequence-omega.net/

Interesting map. So, for the uneducated, does this map indicate that if there are no 800MHZ or 2600MHZ holdings in a particular area, that area will not get B26, or B41? Or, just that it will be a longer wait?

One problem with that one is VERY limited my metro (not very many metros to pick from)

  7. Most of the people who donated last year still participate.  So not much has changed in that regard.  Much of the drop off is our casual users who just came in to see what Sprint was doing in their neighborhoods during Network Vision.  Thanks for your support.

I can understand that, probably now that a majority of NV is finally done and LTE is available in a lot of places people go to now, must be not as many people are wondering "where is 4GLTE?!?!" as you said. I just helped out some a few minutes ago.  :)

  8. S4GRU is dangerously low on funds.  We had very generous donations in November/December that have carried us pretty far into this year.  But those reserves have been depleted.  And if we take in donations in June the same rate as May, we will not be able to cover our expenses this month.  We have had a few monthly recurring donations lapse and not be renewed and for the first time this month we had a PayPal check draft donation bounce.  Setting us back over $200.

If you have been considering a donation to support S4GRU, renewal, donate toward the gift/scholarship fund, set up a recurring monthly donation or just feeling generous...this is a great time.

We appreciate all of you who have given so generously in the past.  We would appreciate anything you can give now.  With the current costs of S4GRU, I will not be able to float the costs out of pocket myself.  We thank you in advance for your consideration to support S4GRU.

I will!! Sad to hear its slowing down, ive noticed the whole site is not as active as last year....

  9. Who else would Shentel partner with?  Verizon and AT&T have their own networks in the Shentel region, and T-Mobile definitely has service (albeit not on the scale Shentel does).

    - Trip

T-mobile does not have the scale of Sprint thats for sure (at least in rural areas) even then I have many friends who have both and Sprint is much better. However the one thing that T-mobile has an advantage over Sprint in my area is 700, Sprint is still not ready for 800 yet. Something else Sprint really needs to start doing soon if they want to stay competitive is getting LTE to GMO sites, it would be nice.

  10. Sprint should buy Ntelos and gain foot print (even though its "native" coverage now) but its not Sprint's actual equipment and foot print. Yes I know Shentel has ties with Sprint but still lol. Speaking about WV I wonder why only the big AT&T and VZW built out the that state but Sprint, old Nextel and T-mobile didnt even touch that state? I know WV is not hugely populated but its not by any means rural like out west. They surround WV though. Just seems odd, but maybe it was too much competition at the time of early stages of network build outs because Ntelos and US Celluar were already there/building out in WV at the time?  I guess I just never understood that.

  11. That sounds fair and is something I thought about, until I realized one particular problem with it. That is spectrum would need to be allocated specifically for that, something I use to think could hold both technologies together using the same spectrum, until I heard that is not the case. Surely some spectrum could be put aside for that use, though carriers seem to be on the path to getting all their spectrum using 4g LTE.

Speed caps could be used though.

I dont mind data caps as long as its NOT a cut off data cap (unlimited), I would RATHER have reduced speeds until the monthly cycle ends than a hard cut off and then your stuck with no data at all unless you are on wifi.

  12. One thing I wish carriers wouldnt do is after your allotment is instead of bringing you down to "2G" speeds, they should bring that up to "3G" now, that more and more people want LTE and lets face it "2G" speeds are terribly slow. I do see why they do this though, just would be nice. (This mainly applies to prepaid plans not just Sprint or Sprint branded).

  13. Just got an email about trying out a trial of Sprint's new loyalty program called "Sprint Points"

    https://points.sprint.com/

looks like you download an app and then shop through participating online retailers and for every 1 point you earn you get $1 service credit on your account.

Thats one way of getting more customers, sounds good to me!!
